러시아의 겨울은 혹독하기로 유명하다. 극동의 외딴 섬, 사할린도 예외는 아닌 듯. 내가 갔던 1월 중순, 그 겨울 거리는 온통 하얗기만 하다. 이방인의 눈에는 하얀 세상을 만든 눈이 반갑지만, 이곳 사람들에게는 그리 반갑지만은 않을 것 같다. 계속 내리는 눈으로 차가 막히는 것은 다반사, 쌓인 눈을 치우는 사람들의 손길에 제설차가 그 손을 더해도 도통 바닥이 보이질 않는다. 제설차가 지나간 길에 또 다른 제설 작업을 하는 기계가 눈에 띈다. 치워도 치워도 끝이 없는 눈이다. “이 정도의 눈은 많이 온 게 아니에요 올해 이 정도면 아직 괜찮은 편이에요” 처음 보는 제설기가 신기해 보여 한 번 운전해봤다. 쌓인 눈길을 지나자 다니기 편한 평평한 길을 만들어 준다. 계속되는 눈과 눈바람에 한국 같으면 외출은 꿈도 못 꿀 텐데, 아이들은 아랑곳하지 않고 신이 났다. 심지어 이 눈바람 속에 조깅을 하는 사람들도 있다. 게다가 유모차를 끌고 나온 엄마들도 많다. 지나는 길에 한 엄마와 아이를 만났다. 색다른 자전거를 탄 아이. 꽁꽁 싸매 입고 나온 아이가 추위가 아닌 카메라에 얼어붙었다. “집이 근처라 매일 산책해요” 핸들조정이 가능한 스키자전거는 아이들에게 인기다. 이번엔 멀리 있는 아이들이 눈에 띈다. 할머니와 썰매를 즐기고 있는데, 아이들이 썰매 타는 모습을 보니 옛 생각이 난다. 아이 둘, 쌍둥이 형제다. 반가운 마음에 인사를 건넸지만, 이 아이도 얼어붙었다. 이번엔 친해지고자 다가섰더니, 무뚝뚝했던 아이가 선뜻 자기 썰매를 내어준다. 아이 덕에 나도 잠시 썰매를 타면서 어린 시절 추억에 빠져봤다.

Mount Frankland National Park Lookout -2022
Mount Frankland Lookout will not disappoint as you marvel at the uninterrupted views high above the tree tops of Walpole ,all the way to the Porongurups.
For those more energetic, the Towerman's Lookout takes a bit more effort , but the rewards are even more amazing .You have the choice of the base walk or the slow incline of the paved section. However either way you will need to negotiate the stairs - ladder which maybe challenging.
Less crowds - one not to miss!
