Man is born from water... On the banks of the river Senegal were found numerous human bones, with their procession of stone tools cut. 50 000 years ago, man was already present in Senegal, as seen by the most recent excavations made on the peninsula of Cape Verde (Dakar). Also, circles of megaliths in laterite, raised towards the sky, were found in the neighborhood of Nioro-du-Rip, around thirty kilometers from Kaolack, the capital of Sine-Saloum. We know today that they are by a civilization that praised the sun. Jewels, tools and pottery of various periods have been found in the pyramidal monuments (tumuli), they prove the age, but also the continuance of the human presence in Senegal, from the Paleolithic until the end of the prehistory. Saint-Louis is a city on the northwest coast of Senegal.

Sahara Surf - Episode 9 - The Mauritania Job

We've made it to the capital of Mauritania, Nouakchott. However, we have been forced to abandon Daffy the Peugeot (the 3rd vehicle we've lost!) back in the Sahara Desert. Now with just the trusty Audi remaining, we must stick with the Boxy But Good team (who are kindly helping out by carrying some of our kit and Tom) and drive 100's of miles east across Mauritania. We must make it to the border with Mali within 2 days, as it is on that 2nd day that our desert guide has arranged for a particular border guard to be there with a stamp which will alllow us out of the country with one less car than we entered it with (a potentially costly red tape bonanza awaits if we miss this man with the stamp). Breakdowns, camels, friendly engine fixing locals, dancing kids and endless expanses of stunning scenery await...
