Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a town along the Romantic Road in Bavaria, Germany, about halfway in between Frankfurt and Munich. It is best known for its medieval town centre (Altstadt), seemingly untouched by the passage of time, encircled by the undamaged 14th-century town wall. In the Middle Ages, Rothenburg ob der Tauber was a free imperial city, reaching its apex of prosperity under mayor Heinrich Toppler in the 15th century with a large population of 6,000 - much larger than Frankfurt or Munich at that time. Today Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a small, quaint town and a big tourist attraction. Especially popular with American and Japanese tour-buses and organized groups, the town can feel a bit overcrowded sometimes, but its sheer beauty makes up for that and more than justifies its popularity.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Germany.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a city located on the Romantic Road and where Germany’s Middle Ages have been preserved right up to the present day.
The huge Röder Gate is one of several entrances to this former free imperial city that is protected by a high wall and massive fortified towers.
From the market square, the Herrengasse leads down to the Burg Gate. In previous centuries a horse market was held there and it was also a much-favoured residential area of the aristocracy. Next to the Herrn Fountain is a Franciscan Church, a spartan mediaeval sacred building with five chapels and numerous tombs along its walls.
One of the city’s most famous views is Plönlein Gate, Siebers Tower and a number of half-timbered buildings. Another strongly fortified gate, the Kobolzeller Gate, is both defiant and powerful at the same time.
Located above theTauber Valley, Rothenburg is, not surprisingly, a very popular tourist destination, a fairytale, picture-postcard city.

Rothenburg may be small, but it has a remarkable wealth of historical sights, museums, churches, abbeys and monuments. So be sure to allow plenty of time for your visit. Rothenburg is also a great place to explore the Romantic Road, Germany's most famous and possibly most beautiful scenic route, where the country looks like something straight out of a fairytale, with royal palaces, beautiful countryside and, last but not least, delicious food. Back in Rothenburg, another nostalgic spot is the Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Village. The largest Christmas shop in Europe open all-year round, it stocks everything that makes the festive season special.
