Launceston (/ˈlɒnsɛstən/ (audio speaker iconlisten)) is a city in the north of Tasmania, Australia, at the confluence of the North Esk and South Esk rivers where they become the Tamar River (kanamaluka). Launceston has a population of 110,472 in the significant urban area (2020). Launceston is the second most populous city in Tasmania after the state capital, Hobart, As of 2020, Launceston is the 17th largest city in Australia. Launceston is fourth-largest inland city and the ninth-largest non-capital city in Australia. Launceston is the most liveable regional city,[10] and was one of the most popular regional cities to move to in Australia from 2020 to 2021. Launceston won the Australian town of the year in 2022.
Settled by Europeans in March 1806, Launceston is one of Australia's oldest cities and it has many historic buildings. Like many places in Australia, it was named after a town in the United Kingdom – in this case, Launceston, Cornwall. Launceston also had the first use of anaesthetic in the Southern Hemisphere, it was the first Australian city to have underground sewers, and it was the first Australian city to be lit by hydroelectricity. The city has a maritime climate with four distinct seasons and is appreciably warmer than the south of the island during summer. Local government is split between the City of Launceston and the Meander Valley and West Tamar Councils.

Monkeys in City Park? | Launceston, Tasmania, Australia
We only had about 24 hrs in Launceston, but we filled that time with plenty of fun, from exploring the picturesque local forests, walking the spectacular Cataract Gorge (including torturing Dana's sister with a chair lift and suspension bridge), losing way too much time watching Macaques play, and sampling delicious gluten free food from a local GF cafe. I reckon we'll be back to see more of Launceston in the future!

Hobart is located in Tasmania's south-east, on the estuary of the River Derwent, making it the most southern of Australia's capital cities. Its skyline is dominated by the Kunanyi, the Mount Wellington, temporal mild climate, and its harbour, Forming the second-deepest natural port in the world, make Hobart a picturesque place to live in the world.
With ever increasing population with traffic congestion, the beautiful city Hobart needed to utilise the river Derwent as alternative waterways for the daily commuters. In August 2021 Tasmanian Govt. started a commuter ferry trial service between Bellerive and Hobart.
This new Derwent ferry also makes a perfect short river cruise for the photography and videography of Hobart. It was a calm August afternoon. Our video covers a short return journey from Hobart to Bellerive in 4K.
