Top 10 Things to Do in Launceston, Tasmania

Cataract Gorge
Cataract Gorge is a wonderful natural attraction with walking trails, the world's longest single-span chairlift, a swimming pool, a restaurant, a kiosk, peacocks, wildlife, lovely gardens and a suspension bridge. Walk to the Duck Reach Power Station - more details here

Penny Royal
It is a colonial-themed village with cafes, restaurants and fun activities, including a cliff jump, zip lines, rock climbing, boat rides, gold fossicking and more. It's a fun experience for the whole family.

City Park
City Park in the centre of Launceston has a conservatory, duck pond, giant chess board, playground and cafe. It is a beautiful place to enjoy the shady trees and flowering garden beds. You can also see the Japanese Macaques monkeys.

Queen Victoria Museum
QVMAG in Launceston is Australia's largest regional museum, and entry is free. There are displays of dinosaurs, planes, trains, native animals, history and the Launceston Planetarium. Some of the shows are interactive.

Heritage Walks
Launceston is one of Australia's oldest cities; wander around the city streets and marvel at the impressive Victorian and Colonial architecture.
Some buildings date back to 1804 when Launceston was first established. You can also visit Princes Park with its remarkable fountain in the centre of the square.

Tamar River Cruises
Take a cruise aboard the Lady Launceston or the Tamar Odyssey on the Tamar River or around Cataract Gorge. A great way to see the beautiful sights along the wonderful Tamar River.

Boag's Brewery
The historic James Boag Brewery is located on William Street, near the banks of the North Esk River. You can visit the Brewery for lunch, a cold beer or take a tour of the brewery to learn more about the beer-making process. The tour includes a beer tasting.

Tamar Island Wetlands
On the outskirts of Launceston is a unique estuarine wetland ecosystem of mudflats, lagoons and islands with abundant plants. Bird and animal life.
The 4-kilometre circuit, which takes approx. 1.5 hours is one of the 60 Great Short walks of Tasmania.

The Launceston Harvest Market is a community farmers market in Citimere Street that is open every Saturday from 8.30 am - 12.30 pm. There is a beautiful range of fresh fruit and vegetables, Tasmanian products, coffee and food trucks.

Punchbowl Falls & Reserve
Punchbowl Falls is a lovely seasonal waterfall hidden away in Punchbowl Reserve in Launceston. The park is a beautiful open area with plenty of grass to play on, a playground, toilets, BBQs, gardens, sculptures and walking tracks.

Richmond is a charming historic town nestled in the Coal River Valley 25 kilometres from Hobart. It has a rich convict history and incredible Georgian architecture, with many restored heritage buildings dating back to the early 1820s.

Oatlands is a lovely, historic town located along the midland Highway 83 kilometres north of Hobart. It is one of Tasmania’s oldest settlements, with incredible Georgian architecture and more than 150 sandstone buildings built by convicts in the early 1800s.

Ross is a picturesque, historic village on the banks of the Macquarie River, 117 kilometres north of Hobart. This wonderfully preserved village was built by convict labour in the early 1800s and is probably the best 19th-century village in Australia.

The Tahune AirWalk is a walkway elevated 30 metres above the forest floor, and the narrow cantilever section juts out 50 metres over the Huon River. There are stunning views of the confluence of the Huon and Picton Rivers and vistas to the peaks of the World Heritage Area.

Hastings Caves
You can explore the fantastic dolomite cave system, a labyrinth of chambers, richly decorated and cleverly lit to highlight these amazing formations. Newdegate Cave is the largest dolomite tourist cave in Australia.

Hartz Mountains National Park
Has been shaped by ancient glaciers and is a lovely place to visit in Tasmania’s remote and rugged southwest wilderness. You will see dolerite mountains, small glacial lakes and waterfalls, and a variety of alpine plants and vegetation.

Lake Esperance
Lake Esperance is a tarn ripped into the Alpine Highlands by a glacier. The crystal-clear waters are spectacularly beautiful. The Lake Esperance walk is one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks; it is 3.5 kilometres return and takes approx. 1.5 hours.

Cockle Creek
Cockle Creek is as far south as you can drive in Australia. It's situated on Recherche Bay in the Southwest National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. This remote stretch of white sandy beach is absolutely stunning.

Pelverata Falls
It is one of the tallest waterfalls in Tasmania and plunges 114 metres down the rock face? The walk to the viewing platform at the base of the falls is 5.2 kilometres and takes about 3 hours. Take care, as the track is rocky and slippery in places.

Duckhole Lake
This delightful tranquil lake is actually a flooded sinkhole. You can discover it in the Southwest National Park; it is part of the extensive regional cave and karst system that includes Hastings Caves. The walk is 4.2 kilometres return and takes 1.5 hours.

Huon River
The Huon River is 174 kilometres long, flows east through the fertile Huon Valley, and ends at the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. You can explore it by Jet Boat, Sailing Boat or kayak, and it is also a popular spot for swimming and fishing.

Geeveston Platypus Walk
Wander along the banks of the Kermandie River near Heritage Park at Geeveston and see if you can spot a platypus. There are several viewing areas and bridges where you can wait patiently and quietly to spot these elusive creatures.

Huon Valley Apples
There are several organic apple orchards in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. You can try their organic cider at the cellar door and museum at Willie Smiths, Apple Shed. You can also enjoy morning tea or a light lunch.

The Oldest Anglican Church in Australia, St Matthew's, was built in 1823 and is opposite the beautiful Arthurs Square Park.

The town also has the Bush Inn, one of Australia's oldest continuously licensed pubs.

New Norfolk is located 38 kilometres North West of Hobart.

You can wander the Derwent Cliffs track, a 2.2-kilometre walk along the Derwent River.

Enjoy a delicious Devonshire tea in the lovely gardens at the Glen Derwent Heritage Retreat.

From the Pulpit Rock lookout, there are stunning views over New Norfolk, the Derwent River and surrounding farmlands.

Explore Willow Court this was once the largest mental asylum in the Southern Hemisphere, and it now houses some fantastic antiques stores.

A short drive from New Norfolk is the Derwent Estate winer; you can do a wine tasting and enjoy a cheese platte, overlooking the Derwent valley.

Discover Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can get up close to the Tasmanian devils, wombats, quolls and hand-feed the kangaroos.

The Tasman Peninsula is an area of land in the southeast of Tasmania that is surrounded by beautiful bays and ocean. The Peninsula has Storm Bay in the west and south, the Tasman Sea out to the east and Norfolk Bay and Frederick Henry Bay to the north and northwest.

The Peninsula is connected by a small isthmus named Eaglehawk Neck. The Tasman Peninsula has spectacular natural beauty and amazing views that will take your breath away.

The highlight of the Tasman Peninsula is the extraordinary rugged coastline and wonderful Natural Attractions like Remarkable Cave, Tasman Arch and the Tessellated Pavement.

It also has some wonderful and challenging hikes including Cape Hauy, Cape Raoul and Bivouac Bay.

Top 10 Things to Do on the Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania

Remarkable Cave
Is remarkable not only for its unique form but also because it’s opening, seen from the viewing platform is the shape of Tasmania. Once a deep and covered cave, the site is today a deep rock bridge carved out of the sandstone rock face.

Hike Cape Raoul
A Challenging 14 kilometres Grade 4 Hike to the southern most point on the Tasman Peninsula. You will be rewarded with outstanding coastal views and the chance to see seals at the seal bay lookout. Takes about 5 hours to complete.

Tasman Arch
Is what’s left of the roof of a large sea cave, or tunnel, that was created by wave action over many thousands of years. The pressure of water and compressed air, sand, and stones acted on vertical cracks (joints) in the cliff, dislodging slabs and boulders.

Coal Mines Historic Site
A walk around this site is a must do for anyone interested in discovering history dating back to the 1800’s. There are more than 25 substantial ruins and the remains of the coal mining activities in an undisturbed 214 hectares of bushland setting.

The most well known example of a tessellated pavement is the one at Eaglehawk Neck on the Tasman Peninsula. This example consists of both a pan formation and a loaf formation

Hike Cape Hauy
This 9.4 kilometre hike has over 4500 stone steps along the Grade 3 walking track. The highlight is seeing the Totem Pole from the viewing platform, an amazing dolerite sea cliff that is 65 metres high and only 4 metres wide.

Waterfall Bay
A lovely easy 3.4 kilometre walk to the Waterfall Bay viewing platform. Where you can look across to the cliff face and see the Waterfall Bay waterfall, this unique waterfall plunges directly into the ocean. The walk will take approx. 90 minutes.

Hike Bivouac Bay
The 10 kilometre walking track to Bivouac Bay begins at Fortescue Bay Beach. Follow the Grade 3 undulating track past Canoe Bay, over the suspension bridge and you will reach the lovely sheltered Bivouac Bay.

Watch the Birds at Fortescue Bay
Tasmania has a wonderful variety of birdlife, and we discovered many different species at Fortescue Bay. Including Pacific Gulls, Kookaburras, Black Currawong, Pied Oystercatcher, and many more.

Watch the Sunset
Theres no better way to end the day than watching the sunset over the ocean. We enjoyed this amazing view whilst staying at Sunset Bay near the Tasman Peninsula.
