Train BEAUTIFUL Window View - Bad Schandau to Dresden

Bad Schandau is a spa town in Germany, in the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district of the Free State of Saxony. It is situated on the right bank of the Elbe, at the mouth of the valley of the Kirnitzsch and in the area often described as Saxon Switzerland.

Bad Schandau lies east of the Elbe right on the edge of the Saxon Switzerland National Park in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains; the National Park Centre is located in the town. The original town centre nestled on the steep, towering sandstone rocks on the right-hand, northern bank of the River Elbe and squeezed in places into the narrow valley of the Kirnitzsch. The town centre lies 121.7 m above sea level (HN) (market square), whilst its highest points lie over 400 metres above sea level. A rural tram line, the Kirnitzschtal Tramway, accompanies the little river for several kilometres and offers access to the nearby walking area.

Bad Schandau is about 6 kilometres from the Czech frontier and 33 km southeast of Dresden on the railway to Děčín.

The borough of Bad Schandau consists of the quarters Krippen, Ostrau, Postelwitz, Schmilka, Porschdorf, Prossen and Waltersdorf. All of these except Krippen lie on the right (northern) bank of the Elbe, whilst Krippen lies on the left (southern) bank.

The original craftsmen's and merchants' settlement left of the Elbe with surviving timber-framed houses that were mentioned as early as 1379 has been a summer resort since the end of the 19th century, when development of tourism began. The village was the sphere of action of the Krippen villager and inventor of mechanical wood pulp for the manufacture of paper, Friedrich Gottlob Keller (1816–95), from 1853 to his death. A memorial tablet on the Keller Museum, house number 76 in the main road named after him and in which the inventor once lived, celebrates him and his work. In 2009, Krippen had a population of 568 (1999: 720).

A stream, the Krippenbach, joins the Elbe near Krippen. The stream is supplied from the Gautzschgraben spring near the border with Czech Republic, and also from other sources on the other side of the state border, its catchment area reaching almost as far as Maxičky on the Bohemian side of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains below the Okrouhlik (494 m above NN).

Krippen was incorporated into Bad Schandau borough on 1 January 1999.

20,3 km 8h 12 min up 527m down 619m

Video-Aufnahme vom Oktober 2022.

Gondelfahrt Jonsdorf (0:00), Albertfelsen (2:14), Brummernest (4:55), Fensterturm und Nonnenfelsen-Blick (5:58), Friedrichs-Höhe und Semperhexe (7:49), Dachssteine-Aussicht (10:04), Knochen-Fund und Mörderloch (11:54)

Wissenswertes:

For the professional engineer who designs railway systems, see Railway engineering.
An engineer (American and Canadian), train operator, hostler or engine driver (British and Commonwealth English) is a person who operates a train. The engineer is in charge of and responsible for driving the engine, as well as the mechanical operation of the train, train speed, and all train handling. The use of the term engineer to describe this occupation in North America should not be confused with the usual meaning of engineer, as in someone who engages in design.

For many American railroads, the following career progression is typical: assistant conductor (brakeman), conductor and finally engineer. In the US, engineers are required to be certified and re-certified every two to three years. [1]

In India, a driver starts as a diesel assistant or electrical assistant (in case of electric locomotives). They then get promoted on a scale: goods, passenger, Mail / Express and Rajdhani / Shatabdi / Duronto. [2]

In the New Zealand, United States and Canada, train drivers are known as locomotive engineers. In the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Australia they are known as train drivers, engine drivers, locomotive drivers, or locomotive operators.
An engineer is responsible for preparing equipment for service, checking paperwork and the condition of the locomotives. Their duties require that they control acceleration, braking and handling of the train underway. They must know the physical characteristics of the railroad, including passenger stations, the incline and decline of the right-of-way and speed limits. Along with the conductor, the engineer monitors time to not fall behind schedule, nor leave stations early. The train's speed must be reduced when following other trains, approaching route diversions, or regulating time over road to avoid arriving too early. The engineer assumes the duties of the conductor if the conductor is incapacitated.

The locomotive engineer is required to have an intimate knowledge of track geometry including signal placement so as to be able to safely control the train.

Maintaining concentration is of critical importance in this role.

Tourist boats on Spree River, Berlin

Tourist take a boat cruise on the River Spree and see the most famous sights of Berlin, Germany.

The Spree is a river that flows through the Saxony, Brandenburg and Berlin states of Germany, and in the Ústí nad Labem region of the Czech Republic. Approximately 400 kilometres (250 mi) in length, it is a left bank tributary of the River Havel, which itself flows into the Elbe and then the North Sea. It is the river on which the original centre of Berlin was built.

The reach of the river between the Dameritzsee and Muggelsee to the east of Berlin is known as the Muggelspree.

The source of the Spree is located in Neugersdorf, Germany, in the Lusatian Highlands (Lausitzer Bergland) near the Czech border. It runs on the border for a short distance at two points (near Ebersbach and Oppach) before leaving the hills and passing through the old city of Bautzen/Budyšin, the center of the Sorbs in Upper Lusatia. Just to the north of Bautzen the river flows through the Bautzen Reservoir. Further north the river passes through the city of Spremberg and the Spremberg Reservoir before reaching the city of Cottbus. To the north of Cottbus the river enters the Spreewald, a large wetlands area in Lower Lusatia.

In the Spreewald the river passes through the towns of Lübbenau, Lübben and Leibsch. Just below Leibsch, the Dahme Flood Relief Canal diverts water from the Spree to run into the River Dahme at Märkisch Buchholz. The Spree continues north from Leibsch before flowing into the Neuendorfer See at the northern edge of the Spreewald. From the Neundorfer See it then flows in an easterly direction to the Schwielochsee, and then in a northerly and westerly direction to the town of Fürstenwalde. From Fürstenwalde the river continues to flow westwards, through the Dämeritzsee and Müggelsee, to Köpenick in the southeastern part of Berlin, where it is joined by its tributary, the River Dahme.

The final reach of the Spree is where it is best known. It flows through the city centre of Berlin to join the River Havel in Spandau, one of Berlin’s western boroughs, which itself ultimately merges with the Elbe to enter the sea in Cuxhaven, after flowing through Hamburg. On its route through Berlin, the river passes Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom), the Reichstag and the Schloss Charlottenburg. The renowned Museum Island (Museumsinsel), with its collection of five major museums, is actually an island in the Spree. The Badeschiff is a floating swimming pool moored in the Spree.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO
How about exploring Berlin besides the stories of war, Nazi, concentration camps, or anything horrific? Let's relax and enjoy Berlin's summer sunset at the river Spree.

Let's hear about Spree River tale from and here it is...
The River Spree. It sounds small, whereas the Rhine, for example, could be nothing other than enormous. However, the Spree is not to be sniffed at. Approximately 400 kilometres in length, it flows through the Saxony, Brandenburg and Berlin states of Germany before cutting into the Czech Republic. It is the river on which the original centre of Berlin was built.
The Spree drains an area of 10,100 square kilometres. It begins in the Lusatian Moutains above Neugersdorf and flows past Bautzen and Spremberg where it forks. After it passes Cottbus, its unweaves into many channels, making the marshy wooded region known as the Spree Forest. Eventually it passes Fürstenwalde and Köpenick before winding through Berlin. The course of the Spree, with its place names seeingly lifted from a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, is the kind of thing that would have had Patrick Leigh Fermour beside himself. There is something magical about the German countryside.
However, within Berlin, there is the option to take a riverboat cruise along the Spree. You can catch dozens of sights from a rather different perspective as the river wends between them. You can choose your time, too — for something really lovely, go for the evening tour during the summer months. The more energetic can rent bicycle to follow the river, stopping off to visit attractions as they go, and the languid can simply relax in one of the many fine bars that can be found on the banks of the Spree.
