We return to the stunningly gorgeous Ixil Region of Guatemala, located high in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes. Getting here was quite an adventure for us, along one of the most dangerous roads in Guatemala - this is also one of the most scenic roads in Guatemala!
The Guatemala Highlands are one of our favorite areas of this country - we're happy to share our journey to the friendly towns of Santa Maria Nebaj, San Juan Cotzal and San Gaspar Chajul.

En esta ocasión nos fuimos a visitar las Cataratas de Santa Avelina en la Aldea de Santa Avelina Guatemala, en el municipio de San Juan Cotzal y las Grutas de Cunen en Cunen, Quiché Guatemala.
Hay muchas cataratas en Guatemala , pero definitivamente estas nos impresionaron mucho! Creemos es uno de los destinos turisticos en guatemala que realmente vale la pena conocer.
Primero llegamos a nebaj quiche , y allí nos hospedamos en un lindo hotel en el centro, y luego tomamos nuestro camino hacia Santa Avelina Guatemala .
Si creías que no había turismo en Quiché, estás muy equivocado, este es un lugar escondido impresionante!

The road from Nebaj to Coban
There are many different opinions about the road condition from Nebaj to Coban
Especially the information about the stretch from Uspantan to San Christobal is very unclear.
This movie shows the worst stretch of this very passable road.

I took this trip in the August 2011. First part of the video shows an over night hike to the top of Tajumulco Volcano (Volcán Tajumulco) organized by Quetzaltrekkers nonprofit organization - . Tajumulco's elevation is 4220 meters (13845 feet). The second part is of a hike close to the town of Nebaj in the El Quiche department and a walk through the town itself. Nebaj is located in the northern part of the Guatemala mountains. It is a beautiful town with predominantly indigenous population of Ixil Mayans. The town is situated in a valley surrounded by mountains at 1900 meters above sea level. There are tons of hiking trails that lead in all directions. Quetzaltrekkers do a 6 day hike from Nebaj to Todos Santos.

¿Por qué nadie habla de este paraíso en Quiché? ¿Por qué todo es Atitlán o Antigua?
No esperaba encontrar un paisaje tan hermoso en Quiché. No porque dudará de su belleza, lo que sucede es que estamos acostumbrados a saber o conocer lo básico de cada departamento de Guatemala y esto no es lo que nos publican de Quiché.
En fin, me hizo muy feliz conocer este paraíso.

Acul is a remote village deep in the Ixil Triangle of Northwest Guatemala. It took me an hour from the capital city of Nebaj, all on dirt roads, to get to this place. Surprisingly, I found out that this village was known for its cheese production, and we also examine the effects of American money on your typical Guatemalan village.

ON THE: road out of Semuc Champey, the truck we are in pulls over at the top of a hill. The view from the hill is spectacular - verdant green valleys; a small, moss-encrusted church - but the hill itself is covered with trash, the refuse of the hostels along the river. A pack of scabby dogs fights over the scraps. Our driver jumps out and dumps a large barrel of waste onto the pile. The dogs jump at it growling, torn toilet paper trailing from their mouths.

This GUATEMALA TRAVEL series episode takes us to HOBBITENANGO, a HOBBIT VILLAGE in ANTIGUA GUATEMALA! Unique, unexpected, charming and fun are a few words that I would use to describe Hobbitenango. This village literally has tiny Hobbit house that you can rent for overnight stay. There are a variety of hobbit games you can play, loads of unique features that make for great photo ops. Most importantly you MUST visit el mano del gigante (the hand of the giant) that extends off the edge of a mountain with the mystifying silhouette of the three main volcanoes in Antigua Guatemala. You certainly must see it for yourself, especially if you're a Lord of the Rings or Hobbit fan.
