Welcome to the big wave capital of the world! Nazare Portugal is one of the coolest places we've ever visited and we plan to go back many times. Yes, it is that good!!!
We're not surfers, but it is still incredible to see them go after these massive waves! We went to see them every single day and could have easily spent the whole day watching them try, fall, try, surf, and then do it all over again. It was pretty inspiring actually. But there's so much more to Nazare... as you will see in today's video.
If you ever have the chance to visit Nazare, do not hesitate to do it. Also, can't believe our Portugal travel series is almost coming to an end :'(

The Silver Coast is a region located in the central part of Portugal, stretching along the Atlantic Ocean. The two major attractions on the Atlantic coast are Nazare and Peniche, world surfing class resorts, and we will see what they have to offer in this video.

The Algarve is the southernmost region of continental Portugal. Thanks to its year-round sunny weather and beautiful rugged coastline, it’s one of the most popular holiday destinations in all of Europe. In this video we highlight 10 diverse places to visit in the Algarve:
10. Sagres
Sitting at the westernmost tip of the Algarve, Sagres is the wildest and most untamed destination. Windswept, barren landscapes, towering cliffs, and rough waters are what set this place apart.
9. Portimão
Visit the Portimão museum if you want to learn more about its fishing and canning tradition, or go to the medieval Fort of Santa Catarina de Ribamar for panoramic views. But the biggest draw is undoubtedly Portimão’s nearby Praia da Rocha.
8. Faro & Ria Formosa
From cobblestone streets and cozy squares to a wide range of lagoons and wetlands, Faro boasts a blend of city and nature activities. We really enjoyed a boat tour in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which is home to canals, marshland and small islands.

7. Aljezur & West Coast Beaches
With wide-open beaches and sheer sea cliffs, the West Coast of the Algarve is a true hidden gem. It’s also another prime destination for surfing. We recommend Arrifana Beach if you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer.
6. Fishermen’s Village Ferragudo
With its white houses reaching down to the river, walking around this authentic fishing town is an experience in itself. But Praia Grande is also a great place to relax and enjoy watersports.
5. Lagos & Ponta da Piedade
Lagos has a wide range of cafés and restaurants to choose from, but also some historical sights, such as castle walls, churches, and a fort. Combine this with its spectacular coastline, filled with steep cliffs, caves, and grottoes, and you’ve got one of the most scenic destinations in the Algarve.

4. Serra de Monchique
Apart from beautiful beaches, the Algarve is also home to a rolling mountain range. The town of Monchique lies in pristine nature, surrounded by lush green forests. It’s an idyllic and authentic mountain town with sweeping vistas and a network of nature trails.

3. Silves
This historic town cascades down the hill, flowing out from beneath the beautiful Silves Castle (Castelo de Silves). Enjoy your time learning about the town’s history inside the castle walls as well as on the cobbled streets surrounding it.
2. The 7 Hanging Valleys
This 12km out-and-back hike takes between 4 to 6 hours to complete if you do the full route, and includes views of the Atlantic ocean as well as limestone rock formations. There is some elevation gain and loss as you climb up and down each of the valleys, but overall the hike is easy to moderate.
1. Benagil Cave
The Benagil Cave is a world-class natural attraction in the Algarve. Although it’s only a short distance from Benagil Beach, you still need a kayak, stand up paddle board, or guided boat tour to reach the caves safely.

Most Beautiful Part of Portugal - Nazaré Travel Guide
Nazaré is one of the most beautiful parts of Portugal and is home to Portugal's biggest waves. What used to be a small fishing village is now home to the biggest surfable waves in the world, the kindest people, and is surrounded by beautiful places like Alcobaça Monastery, and the walled city of Óbidos where you can try traditional Ginja served in chocolate cups.

Lisbon to Nazare: A Great Day Trip to the Coast in Portugal
There are no trains to bring you on a day trip from Lisbon to Nazare, but you can take a bus from Lisbon. Or, the drive here is easy if you rent a car. Nazare is about 75 miles north of Lisbon.

Nazare is known for its giant waves, which attract professional surfers during the winter months.
From the town it's a hike down to the old fort, which now serves as an overlook.
A lot of people take tuk-tuks down to check it out.
The viewpoint at the old fort is open. For 2 Euros, you can check out the museum inside, which explains how the topography of the ocean floor helps to produce the record waves at Nazare.
You can also check out the surf museum inside, which is full of surfboards and memories from the surfers who’ve conquered the waves here.
One beach in Nazare, Praia do Norte, is accessible by several paths down from the overlook, which are full of wildflowers in the summer. Even in the summer, non-pros are advised to stay out of the water here due to the currents and waves. You’ll find great rock formations, and it’s a perfect place to relax on the sand.
The other beach, Praia da Nazare, is on the south side of the overlook. It's a much better swimming spot, with much more manageable waves.
Nazare's town center is full of restaurants and stores, and a historic cathedral.
Consider combining a day trip from Lisbon to Nazare with a stop in Obidos, an ancient hilltop town nearby!

We went on a day trip to Nazaré, Portugal. A beach town a 1.5 hour drive from Lisbon that’s known for it’s whopping great waves ????
The ‘big wave season’ runs between October - March and you can check just how big the waves are gonna be for the days ahead on nazarewaves.com ????????
If you’re lucky enough to be in the area when there’s ‘Giant Waves’ which reach heights of 20-30 metres, keep checking to see if the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge gets announced. It could be at any point between now and the end of the season.
????♀️ It’s a competition where professional surfers will try their luck against huge waves - I would have LOVED to have witnessed it with my own eyes.
It’s also worth saying that Nazaré is just a 2 hour drive down from Porto as well - so it’s definitely one to keep checking on if you’re planning a trip already and this sounds right up your street ????

Nazaré Portugal - O que visitar
Este video mostra Nazaré, os seus principais bairros ; Pederneira, Praia e Sítio. Cada um deles conta uma história e um passado.
A Pederneira, a povoação mais antiga medieval, relacionada com a Ordem de Cister e Alcobaça.
A Praia, com o estabelecimento de pescadores a partir do séc. XIX e que no séc. XX entra nos roteiros do turismo.
O Sítio relacionado com a devoção a uma imagem de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré da Galileia encontrada numa gruta. Primeiro constroiem uma ermida (Ermida da Memória) e depois o Santuário, parra onde transferem essa imagem. Ao lado do sítio, na praia norte fica o Forte de S.Miguel o Arcanjo, onde fica o Surf Wall, um Museu com as pranchas oferecidas pelos surfistas que participaram nos campeonatos da Onda Gigante aqui na Praia Norte. No final do video imagens da Capela de S.Gião uma antiga capela visigótica do séc. VII que se localiza a sul do Porto da Nazaré.
