Exploring Navan Town in IRELAND

Exploring Navan Town in IRELAND
Pierce Brosnan from Black Adam Hometown.

Navan (/ˈnævən/ NAV-ən; Irish: An Uaimh [ənˠ ˈuəvʲ], meaning the Cave) is the county town of County Meath, Republic of Ireland. In 2016, it had a population of 30,173, making it the tenth largest settlement in the Republic of Ireland. Navan is at the confluence of the River Boyne and Blackwater, around 50 km north west of Dublin. Its name is a palindrome.

According to local folklore a Souterrain was discovered near the Navan Viaduct in 1848. The location of its entrance has since been lost.

Another folk tale involves the ghost of Francis Ledwidge. According to the story an old friend of Ludwidge was working at the Meath Chronicle, the local news printer, when he heard the sound of Ledwidge's motorcycle outside. His friend was confused as he believed Ledwidge was fighting on the Western Front, upon going out to greet him the friend found that Ledwidge had disappeared. The story claims that this ghostly apparition appeared at the same moment he died.

In the Fenian cycle of Irish mythology, Fionn mac Cumhaill studied under the druid Finegas along the river Boyne. He is believed to have caught the Salmon of Knowledge in what is now Navan.

My Trip to Navan Ireland ???????? 2023

Welcome to my channel! My name is Zakihero, and I'm based in Ireland. In this video, I'm sharing Navan (/ˈnævən/ NAV-ən; Irish: An Uaimh [ənˠ ˈuəvʲ], meaning the Cave) is the county town of County Meath, Ireland.

Navan is a town located in County Meath, in the province of Leinster, Ireland.
center of Meath County Council and is the fifth-largest town in the county. As of the 2016 census, Navan has a population of 30,173 people.

The town is situated on the River Boyne and is located about 50 kilometers northwest of Dublin. Navan has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Neolithic era. The town was an important center of Gaelic culture and learning in the Middle Ages, and many historical landmarks, including the Navan Fort and the Hill of Tara, can be found in the surrounding area.

Today, Navan is a bustling town with a thriving economy and a wide range of cultural and recreational amenities. It is home to a number of businesses, including multinational corporations such as Microsoft and Xerox. The town is also known for its vibrant nightlife, with a range of pubs, bars, and nightclubs to suit all tastes. Other attractions in the area include the River Boyne, the Navan Racecourse, and the Boyne Valley Drive, which takes visitors on a scenic tour of the area's many historical and natural landmarks.

A walk around Navan, Co.Meath

Passing thru Navan of a Sunday morning, I took a few short clips of video. Before coming here, I knew not much about it - besides Navan being one of the few places in Ireland that is a palindrome (look it up).

Overall, it looked pretty good to me. Fairly clean and tidy. The riverside on the way in was very pleasant. Some new development has gone on there in recent years. An old castle or fort seemed to be sited on a hill too.

Naaaaaavvvan gets a bad press - it could be undeserved!

Facts
Ireland is known for its wide expanses of lush, green fields. In fact, its nickname is the Emerald Isle.
But there are also large areas of rugged, rocky landscape. About 15,000 years ago,
Ireland was completely covered by thick glaciers.
The movement of these giant sheets of ice stripped the soil,
leaving huge tracts of flat, limestone pavement.

PEOPLE & CULTURE
Ireland is a nation of storytellers.
The tradition dates back to Celtic bards,
who would record and recite the country's history.
Many famed writers come from Ireland, including four winners of the Nobel Prize for literature.
The Irish also excel in music and sports.

NATURE
The Irish have a great affection for nature and rural life.
The country's first coins even featured pictures of animals.
Low levels of development and pollution in Ireland have left most of the nation's open spaces relatively undisturbed.
Did you know that there are no wild snakes in Ireland?
The sea has stopped many animals common on mainland Europe from reaching the island.
There are also only two wild mouse species, one type of lizard, and just three kinds of amphibians.
Irish wildlife is protected by government conservation programs.
To preserve natural habitat,
the government has established six national parks and hundreds of national heritage areas throughout the country.

EXPLORING KELLS TOWN in IRELAND

EXPLORING KELLS TOWN in County Meath - IRELAND

Kells (/ˈkɛlz/; Irish: Ceanannas) is a town in County Meath, Ireland. The town lies off the M3 motorway, 16 km (10 mi) from Navan and 65 km (40 mi) from Dublin. It is best known as the site of Kells Abbey, from which the Book of Kells takes its name.

The settlement was originally known by the Irish name Ceannanas or Ceannanus, and it is suggested that the name 'Kells' developed from this. From the 12th century onward, the settlement was referred to in English and Anglo-Norman as Kenenus, Kenelles, Kenles, Kenlis, Kellis and finally Kells. It has also been suggested that Kenlis and Kells come from an alternative Irish name, Ceann Lios, meaning [the] head fort. Kells, Kenlis and Headfort all feature in the titles taken by the Taylor family.

In 1929, Ceannanus Mór was made the town's official name in both Irish and English. Following the creation of the Irish Free State, a number of towns were renamed likewise. Ceanannas has been the official Irish-language form of the place name since 1969. In 1993, Kells was re-adopted as the town's official name in English

Navan Centre & Fort Reopens - 24th May 2021

Opening Days: Tuesday – Sunday | Hours: 10am – 5pm

Armagh’s Navan Centre, which tells the story of one of the world’s most important archaeological sites. The popular visitor attraction, located just two minutes from Ireland’s ecclesiastical capital, Armagh City, is currently at the centre of a new global focus after researchers uncovered new evidence of “absolutely huge” religious structures dating back to the Iron Age.

Long popular with visitors from across the island, the Navan Centre will be open from Thursdays through to Sunday every week with a new and exciting programme of outdoor interpretative events which celebrate its pivotal place in history, its Celtic past and the stories of warriors, knights and legends.

Exploring how the area’s native countrymen and women lived, what they ate, wore and how they spent their days with practical demonstrations, talks and interpretative events, Navan Centre & Fort provides visitors with one the best, unique family days out.
