Manipuri classical dance form showcased at Sangai Fest 2013 - Imphal

A traditional classical dance presented at the Sangai ,Fest'13 - Imphal.

Manipuri dance is one of the major Indian classical dance forms. It originates from Manipur, a state in north-eastern India on the border with Burma. In Manipur, surrounded by mountains and geographically isolated at the meeting point of the orient and mainland India, the form developed its own specific aesthetics, values, conventions and ethics. The cult of Radha and Krishna, particularly the raslila, is central to its themes but the dances, unusually, incorporate the characteristic symbols (kartal or manjira) and double-headed drum (pung or Manipuri mrdanga) of sankirtan into the visual performance. Guru Naba Kumar, Guru Bipin Singh, Rajkumar Singhajit Singh, his wife Charu Sija Mathur, Darshana Jhaveri are some of the prominent exponents of this classical dance form.

Manipuri dance is purely religious and its aim is a spiritual experience.Development of music and dance has through religious festivals and daily activities of the Manipuri people. According to the legend, the indigenous people of the Manipur valley were the dance-expert Gandharvas mentioned in the Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. Not only is dance a medium of worship and enjoyment, a door to the divine, but indispensable for all socio-cultural ceremonies. From the religious point of view and from the artistic angle of vision, Manipuri classical form of dance is claimed not only to be one of the most chastest, modest, softest and mildest but the most meaningful dances of the world.

The most obliging aspect of Manipuri culture is that, it has retained the ancient ritual based dances and folk dances along with the later developed classical Manipuri dance style. Among the classical categories, 'Ras Leela' - a highly evolved dance drama, choreographed on 'Vaishnavite Padavalis' composed by mainly eminent Bengali poets and some Manipuri Gurus, is the highest expression of artistic genius, devotion and excellence of the Manipuris.

Maibi dance, folk dance of Manipur

A Manipuri folk dancer performs Maibi dance at Janapada Loka in Karnataka during the annual Lokotsava festival.

Maibi Dance, ManipurMaibi dance is an Indian spiritual dance which deals with the cosmogony of the Meitei people of Manipur. The dance is performed during the celebration of festival Lai-Haraoba. This is an annual ritual festival of the Meitei Manipuris. The Maibis are the priestesses considered as spiritual mediums by the local people. This feeling can be traced through their dances and the whole concept of the cosmogony of the Meitei people and their way of life.

Interestingly, anyone cannot be a Maibi. To be a Maibi, one has to show definite signs of being spiritually predisposed. The concerned person may show some signs of spiritual predisposition at an early age or when she is an adult. Once her spiritual power is proved, she is selected to be a Maibi. From then onwards she leads the rest of her life as a Maibi is supposed to.

The performance of this spiritual dance comprises of slow, controlled and lyrical movements. The dance starts from the kneeling position. The dancer then rises at a slow pace. In the next step, she holds both her hands near her navel with both thumbs and forefingers touching each other. While performing, the dancer also holds a leaf of a sacred plant quite skilfully between the forefinger and middle finger. Right from the beginning of the dance, the dancer is in trance. Through the performance of Maibi, the dancers invoke the deities and urge them to sanctify the entire community.

After performing as a dancer in a 1961 regional movie, she was rejected by Tamil Director, C.V.Sridhar, during 1964 when she first attempted to act, on the grounds that she was too thin to be heroine in Venniradai and the role went to Venniradai Nirmala.

Later Hema performed in the song Singara Therukku Selai sung by Seergazhi Govindrajan and L.R.Eshwari as a supporting actor from the 1963 Tamil film Idhu Sathiyam starring S.A.Asokan as the hero. Mansi Thiyam performs Manipuri Classical dance: Khajuraho Dance Festival 2017

With a backdrop of the famous Khajuraho temples, an Indian danseuse performs a classical Indian dance.

Mansi Thiyam performs Manipuri classical dance at the annual Khajuraho Dance Festival in Madhya Pradesh.

Khajuraho Festival of Dances is celebrated at a time when the hardness of winter begins to fade and the king of all seasons, spring, takes over. The most colorful and brilliant classical dance forms of india with their roots in the ling and rich cultural traditions across the country, offer a feast for the eyes during a weeklong extravaganza here. Since times immemorials, myriad forms of dance have been adsorbed into the classical dance styles. Watching these performances reveal the age-old trends, trits and nuances that are firmly estabilished in dance in various regions of india.

The aura of these masterpieces has not dimmed over many centiries; nor have the living traditions of these styles lost their fluidity and charm over the long passage of time. Indian traditions of dance have been considered to be divine in origin. In indian mythodilogy, the gods and goddesses are great lovers of music that comproses vocal singing, instrumental music and dance.

Some of the gods are great dancers themselves. Shiva's cosmic dance, the Tandava, Lord Krishna's Rass Leela with the Gopis (female partners), and the legendry beautiful and most skilled dancers known as apsaras, such as Menaka, Urvashi and Rambha, in the celestical court of Lord Indra, the King of Gods, are well versed in the heavenly art of music and dance. These dances of the mind and soul pervade all aspects of life and bring color, joy and gaiety to the festivals and ceremonies of this country.

For ages this etoss has continued in the realm of art and culture of india nad embedded into the diverse dance styles prevalent in various parts of the country. These dances materialize against the backdrop of the glorious temples of Khajuraho, which stand a testimony to the glorious past of India's cultural richness. This temple complex glows with the warmth of sandstone which is ornamented with the sinous curves of sculpture unparalleled in their beauty.

Paying rich tributes to those unnamed and forgotten sculptors, who built these monuments masterpieces, a Hindi poet has rightly said.
