City in Italy
Terni is a city in the southern portion of the region of Umbria in central Italy. The city is the capital of the province of Terni, located in the plain of the Nera river. It is 104 kilometers northeast of Rome. It was founded as an Ancient Roman town.
Terni Cathedral (Duomo, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) (17th century). Built over one of the most ancient Christian edifices of the city, it has today Baroque lines. In the interior is one organ designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The belfry is from the 18th century. The façade has two medieval gates: one of them has the profile of a sabot once used to measure the citizen's shoes in order to ensure that they did not exceed a fixed limit of decency.

• Narni (Narnia in latino) è un comune italiano della provincia di Terni in Umbria. Secondo recenti studi all'interno del suo territorio cade il centro geografico della penisola italiana.
• Narni (in Latin, Narnia) is an ancient hilltown and comune of Umbria, in central Italy. At an altitude of 240 m, it overhangs a narrow gorge of the Nera River in the province of Terni. It is very close to the geographic center of Italy. There is a stone on the exact spot with a sign in multiple languages.
Like many of the smaller towns of Umbria, Narni is still of strikingly medieval appearance today, with stone buildings, and narrow cobblestone streets. The town is famous for one of the largest Roman bridges (Ponte d'Augusto) ever built, by which the Via Flaminia crossed the Nera. One arch of the bridge still stands; it is some 30 meters high.

Narni (Umbria - Italy) - I borghi più belli d'Italia - Video 4K
Narni, uno dei borghi più belli d'Italia, conserva un ricchissimo patrimonio accumulato in tremila anni di storia. Dell'epoca romana rimangono il grandioso ponte di Augusto, il ponte Cardona e l'acquedotto della Formina.
La città vanta anche notevoli monumenti del periodo medievale, come la cattedrale di San Giovenale, con portale romanico, le chiese di San Domenico e di Santa Maria Inpensole, gioielli dell'architettura romanica narnese. Interessanti anche la chiesa di Sant'Agostino e la chiesa di San Francesco. Accanto, nel terziere Fraporta, il palazzo Eroli, sede del Museo della città e del territorio, con gli annessi locali della biblioteca civica. Tra le opere del museo spiccano la pala d'altare con l'Incoronazione della Vergine di Domenico Ghirlandaio e l'Annunciazione di Benozzo Gozzoli.
Stupenda la piazza dei Priori, dove, oltre al duecentesco palazzo del Podestà, costituito dall'unione di tre torri abitazione e oggi sede del Comune, si innalza la trecentesca loggia dei Priori che mostra la deliziosa Loggia del banditore.
Nella parte più elevata dello sperone su cui si adagia la città, svetta la superba Rocca albornoziana, costruita nella seconda metà del XIV secolo.
Oltre che in superficie, la città riserva sorprese emozionanti anche nel sottosuolo con il suggestivo percorso della Narni sotterranea, che si snoda dagli ambienti ipogei del convento di San Domenico: acquedotti, cisterne, cunicoli, cripte e perfino la sala delle torture del Tribunale dell'Inquisizione, con una cella che ancora mostra i graffiti incisi dai prigionieri in attesa di essere condannati.

Founded by the Umbrians, starting from 299 BC. the center became a Roman municipality with the name of Narnia, a toponym deriving from the term NAR, the name attributed to the Nera river in the classical tradition. During the era of the barbarian invasions, Narni suffered long-lasting looting by the Goths of Totila in the context of the events linked to the Greek-Gothic war.
After having been a Longobard steward, it became part of the possessions of the church in 726 AD.
In the 12th century, the city experienced a period of great economic and cultural growth which saw its power and influence increase in the region, so much so that it collided first with Pope Paschal II (1112) and later also with Federico Barbarossa (1167). , from which it was subsequently sacked. During the fourteenth century, it was a feud between the Orsini.
With the looting suffered by the troops of Charles V in 1527 an inexorable decline began for Narni. From the seventeenth century, it became part of the Papal State.
There are many things to see, starting with the imposing fortress of Albornoz (the fortress that overlooks the town from a height of 332 meters above sea level), the Romanesque cathedral of San Giovenale (12th century), the church of Santa Maria in Pensole (1175) and that of San Francesco (XIV century). Also noteworthy are the civil architectures above all the Palazzo dei Priori, with a civic tower and fourteenth-century loggia, the Palazzo del Podestà (town hall) built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the fascinating and evocative underground Narni.
