In September 26, 2004, the first World Metropolitan Development Forum was held in Nantong. In 2005, Nantong had a GDP growth of 15.4%, the highest growth rate in Jiangsu province, and in 2016 Nantong's GDP had a total of about 675 billion yuan, ranking the 21st in the whole country.
Although the city took a blow from the economic depression of the 1930s, as well as the Japanese occupation of the 1930s and 40s, Nantong has remained an important center for the textile industry. Because of its deepwater harbor and connections to inland navigational canals, it was one of 14 port cities opened to foreign investment in recent Chinese economic reforms.

Standing on the Yangtze river delta Nantong is a port city. The city covers an area of 8,544square kilometres and is interspersed by many river tributaries. Nantong is a vital river port bordering Yancheng to the north, Taizhou to the west, Suzhou and Shanghai to the south across the river, and the East China Sea to the east. The Hao River was once an ancient moat encircling Nantong City in the year of 958. With over a thousand years' history, the river is one of the four existent ancient moats in China. Along the Hao River, there are Tianning Temple, Nantong Museum and many squares, parks along with altogether 28 bridges and various species of old trees. The city is home to 7,737,900 people and it has its own airport located in the northwest.

On the 4th March 2016, I travelled from Malaysia to a 5 hours journey to Hangzhou, China and another 3-4 hours journey to Nantong, China to witness and open my eyes of the remarkable and outstanding company called Alphay. Haohe river scenic area in Nantong - the oldest city moat
Located at the center of Nantong, Haohe River is one of the most complete and well-preserved city moats in China. According to historical records, the moat was built in the 10th century. Haohe River is known as “the Emerald Necklace of Nantong”.
Covering an area of 3.23 square kilometers and encompassing the tourist route along the time-honored city moat, the Haohe River Scenic Area consists of Temple Street, Southwest Camp and other historical blocks with the well-maintained layout of an old prefectural capital. It has developed a series of tourism projects integrated with local characteristics, human history, architectural culture, gardening art and folk customs based on abundant non-material cultural heritages, a city moat museum and a modern private garden bequeathed by Zhang Jian (1853–1926), a Chinese entrepreneur, politician and educationist.

Nantong is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, one of the 27 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region, and the economic center and modern port city of the northern wing of the Yangtze River Delta, as approved by the State Council. As of December 2020, Nantong has 3 municipal districts, 1 county, and 3 county-level cities under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 8,001 square kilometers. 2021, Nantong achieved a regional GDP of 110.269 billion yuan, up 8.9% over the previous year, and a year-end resident population of 7.733 million.
Nantong is located in the southeastern part of Jiangsu Province, east of the Yellow Sea and south of the Yangtze River, and is an important part of the Yangtze River City Cluster, the northern gateway to the Shanghai metropolitan area, and one of the first 14 coastal cities in China to open to the outside world. It has 226 kilometers of Yangtze River shoreline and is known as the Northern Shanghai because it is the meeting of the river and the sea and the throat of the north and the south.
Nantong is a national historical and cultural city with a history of more than 1,000 years since it was founded in 956, the third year of Xiande of the Later Zhou Dynasty. In the history of modern Chinese culture, science and education, Nantong founded the first teacher training school, the first folk museum, the first textile school, the first embroidery school, the first drama school, the first Chinese school for the blind and mute, and the first weather station, which are called the first modern Chinese city.
