A noisy SY at Xinghua.
At Donghai an SY pokes its nose out of the coal loading tower.
At Xuemeichang on the Didao system an SY passes with a train of empties.
At Lijing mine.
In the gathering gloom near Jixi Xi an SY running light shunts across a level crossing.
Shunting in misty early morning light at Didao.
A small works diesel railcar propels a couple of flat wagons with the aid of a long pole.
An SY passes the church at Beichang washery on the Chengzihe system.

Chinese Steam, Nanpiao 2

After a long wait on a cold hillside, the exhaust steam of an SY becomes visible through the morning mist. It soon becomes apparent that all is not as it should be. The increasing rumble confirms the initial suspicions. As the train passes, the offending diesel loco can be seen assisting at the rear. This indicated that the end of steam activity at this once excellent centre was shortly to take place. One less place to visit, but who would have thought that real steam would still be working at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century? Filmed December2009

Chinese Steam, Nanpiao 1

Viewed from beside a noisy road high on a hillside above the mine, an SY 2-8-2 pushes a rake of three spoil wagons towards the tip. Frequent blasts on the air horn and one with the steam whistle warns anybody near the track of its approach. December 2009

Chinese Steam 2009 Baiyin 9

The combination of hazy atmosphere and difficult light causes the camcorder's autofocus to have difficulty locking onto the loco as it negotiates the curves through the bleak landscape of the Loess Mountains on its way to the mine. I hope the sound of the loco working hard makes up for the poor video quality.
Shot from the roadside, the same train the following day races tender first up the valley.
Amid the clutter of an industrial landscape a SY class loco waits at the head of a mine workers' train. After briefly opening the regulator to get the train on the move, the driver lets it drift downhill towards Baiyin.
After a brief station stop, the passenger proceeds on its way whilst an SY backs onto a rake of wagons. After coupling up this train also departs on its way. December 2009

The Yongchuan Coal Railway

The narrow gauge Yongchuan Coal Railway, in the Chongqing Region of China, runs for about 20kms and is worked as two sections. The largest mine and washery is about half way along the line at Hongluchang. From there empties head to two other mines to bring unwashed coal back whilst, in the other direction, washed coal is forwarded to the China Rail interchange.

I first visited the railway in November 2012 spending two days exploring the area around Hongluchang:
the washery at Hongluchang (0:00)
street running through Old Honglu (5:20)
Liujing mine near Hongluchang (7:45)

Sixteen months later I returned for another two days and this time covered most of the line:
in the rain near Old Honglu (12:10)
Old Honglu street running (14:25)
the washery at Hongluchang (17:04)
comings and goings at the far end of the line (19:14)
back to Luijing Mine (26:10)
linesiding from China Rail to Old Honglu (27:00)
loading a train at Luijing Mine (31:53)

2006 Januar Winterdampf Nordost China Teil 3

Shibanxi 2011 Part 2: The Railway in its Environment

This footage covers 3 days 10-12 March 2011 during the first Linesiding Tour which visited the Jiayang Coal Railway at Shibanxi. In this part, we see how the railway fits in with the landscape, the people and their daily life. Views of the train include distant and high level shots showing the train in its south western Chinese scenery. The Bagou morning market is included as well as views from the train and, of course, of the trains. Locations included are under the wires between Shibanxi and Sanjin, Mifeng, Caiziba curve, Bagou and Huangcunjin (the upper terminus).

Diesel thrash in brickworks valley... (HD)

A heavy Eastbound coal train pulled by two DF8B's is seen here on the way from Hadashan station to tunnel 2 on the JiTong line. It will soon go through a 180° curve, before passing through tunnels 2, 3 and 4... This part of the line is a real bottleneck, as there is no possibility to cross trains between Hadashan and Shangdian... (Erdi, Inner Mongolia, China, 04/10/2011)

DF4D-4063 Dongdagu - Port of Tianjin passing DF8B-5214

Footage of Ligang Line on May 14, 2017, when DF8B-5214 was hauling empty coal railcars from port to Dongdagu, DF4D-4063 was later dispatched with higher priority. This section at that time didn't belong to electrification railway system so all locomotives were diesel-powered.

Both locomotives were hauling railcars owned by Shenhua Railway Company (a part of Shenhua Group which is a state energy company later merged into China Energy Investment Corporation).

DF8B-5214 was manufactured by CRRC Ziyang and now belongs to China Railway Beijing Group. DF4D-4063 was manufactured by CRRC Dalian and now belongs to Tianjin Nanhuan Railway Corporation.
