Lake Naivasha, approximately one hundred kilometres distant from the capital of Kenya, Nairobi, is the larger of two extraordinary freshwater lakes within the Rift Valley. Lake Naivasha covers an area of two hundred and fifty square kilometres. Its waters are cold but with a maximum depth of only fifteen metres relatively shallow.The biosphere of Lake Naivasha is of great ecological importance for the wildlife of Rift Valley and the landscape is of particular interest to ornithologists. To date around three hundred and fifty bird species have been recorded, among them rare and spectacular varieties such as Marabus and Cormorants.The lake's huge quantities of fish attract a large number of seabirds, most notably the Pelican that has seemed to have taken a liking to this the second largest freshwater lake in Kenya. The nesting places along the shores of Lake Naivasha are mostly located high up in the trees and are very popular with both the indigenous birds and also many migratory varieties.This region became world famous after Joy Adamson a British artist and nature conservationist, wrote a famous book about lions that was subsequently made into a film, Elsa The Lioness.

What I saw simply left me speechless.
There’s also an amazing island called crescent island which we went to, it is home to wilderbeasts, water bucks, zebras, gazelles and giraffes.

Olkaria Geothermal spa. is located inside hell's gate in Naivasha. To access the spa you have to pay the entrance fee to Hell's gate 400/- per adult, 100/- per kid, 300/- for the vehicle.
Swimming costs are 400/- per adult and 100/- for kids. Note that if you are a foreigner you will pay more.

LAKE NAIVASHA KENYA | Close encounter with hippos!
Lake Naivasha was one of our favorite destinations in Kenya! We saw hundreds of hippos on our boat ride around Lake Naivasha! We were also lucky enough to spot giraffes and dozens of different rare birds. This lake and national park in Kenya is also home to zebras and wildebeest. It's a beautiful freshwater lake, surrounded by thick papyrus. It's almost 13km across, but its waters are pretty shallow with an average depth of only 5 meters!
WILD FACT: In the early 20th Century, Naivasha completely dried up and effectively disappeared. As a result, farms came to existence and people moved into the area to farm. But that was only until heavy rains a few years later caused the lake to return to existence. It swallowed up all the newly established farms and estates. It's now flourishing with wildlife. The surrounding land is still rich in natural bounty, and the fertile soils and water supply have made lake naivasha one of Kenya's most important agricultural areas. You can also find a lot of fishermen here... and they do swim in the lake to get to their fishing 'trees'! It's no wonder that hippo attacks are common here...
If you want to see hippos while visiting Kenya, we highly recommend a boat tour around the beautiful Lake Naivasha.
