First impressions of HAMMAMET, Tunisia - A popular holiday destination in North Africa الحمامات تونس

Hello everyone! This is the third episode in my Tunisia series and the first of my Hammamet videos - effectively a Part A of my Hammamet videos. In other words - there will be more Hammamet content coming shortly so do watch out for those :)

In this video, I explore the popular Tunisian holiday destination of Hammamet. I arrived at my hotel in Hammamet earlier in the day after a short louage journey from Tunis, and after a brief rest, this was the first time I left the hotel again.

From the outset, I'm surprised at the level of activity and traffic - even though this is of course far less than what one will experience in Tunis, a far bigger city. In my previous video in this series, I explained why I requested a garden view rather than a city view at the hotel - the hustle and bustle of the city immediately justified that decision! I also note that Hammamet also has yellow taxis and trees with square cut leaves, just like Tunis. A key difference, however, is that some shops sell beach-related goods, which immediately tells a story of a seaside city.

After a short walk from the hotel down the main road, I arrive at the ocean and is impressed by the fort that overlooks it. I buy some pistachio-, caramel- and strawberry-coated nuts from a street vendor before walking down an ocean trail next to the fort.

After marvelling at the magnificent ocean setting, I walk towards the medina. I meet a gentleman that shows me a souvenir shop as well as an 800-year old house that is currently used as a boat house by fishermen. Afterwards I give him a tip and have some football chat (note: this video was shot a couple of days before the Tunsia versus France football match, hence my prediction and reference to that football match - see if i got the prediction correct!).

I say goodbye to the gentleman and walk further in / towards the medina. I stumble across stunning art, lots of feline friends and various references to fish in many forms. I also buy a fridge magnet from a shop and comment on the different vibe in Hammamet compared to Tunis, including the parts of the medina I explore here.

Nabeul (/ˈnæbəl/; Arabic: نابل Nābil), is a coastal town located in northeastern Tunisia, on the south coast of the Cape Bon peninsula and surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on both sides. It is the first seaside resort[1] in Tunisia. It is known for its agricultural riches and its touristic potentials. The city had a population of 73,128 as of the 2014 census.
Nabeul's modern economy is based primarily on tourism. The most famous hotels are mainly located at the seaside. The most known tourist resorts in Nabeul include the Roman archaeological site of Neapolis (positioned 2 kilometres away from downtown), the archaeological museum which offers ceramic and Punic statues dating back to the seventh century BC and an important collection of Roman mosaics proceeded from sites of the region.
Souk El Balgha is considered one of the most ancient and special souks in the region of Nabeul. It was dedicated to fabricating and selling the balgha heelless slippers made from leather. Souk Haddada is devoted for sheet metal workers. Souk Ezzit is where the traders sold the oil. The weekly Souk that takes place every Friday attracts many tourists and locals. The Medina of Nabeul can be accessed through many doors: Beb Blad, the main entry, Beb el Zaouia and Beb el Khoukha.

Nabeul, نابل , coastal town in Tunisia on Cap Bon peninsula , tourism, hotels

Nabeul (Arabic: نابل‎ About this sound Nābil ; French: [naˈbøl]) is a coastal town in north-eastern Tunisia, on the south coast near to the Cap Bon peninsula. It is located at around 36°27′N 10°44′E and is the capital of the Nabeul Governorate. The city has a population of 73,128 (2014 census).

History
Nabeul was founded in the 5th century BC by the Greeks of Cyrene, serving as a trade port. Its name is a tunisification of the Greek Neapolis 'new city' (an etymology it shares with Naples, Neapoli, and Nablus).

Neapolis, Cape Bon as shown on the 4th century Roman Map, Tabula Peutingeriana.
During antiquity Nabeul was also the seat of an ancient Christian Bishopric[1] The Bishopric was founded during the Roman Empire and survived through the arian Vandal and Orthodox Byzantine empires, only ceasing to function with the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb. The diocese was re founded in name at least in the 20th century as a titular see of the Roman Catholic church.[2]

Being on the Mediterranean coast it remains today a popular tourist destination and the main centre of the Tunisian pottery industry.

Representation
Meherzia Labidi Maïza was elected to the assembly of the representatives of the people in the Tunisian parliamentary election in October 2014 by the second district of Nabeul.[3]Crue de Nabeul,
