Santorini is definitely one of the most visited places in Greece thanks to the infamous whitewashed buildings of Eeya, which spill down the cliffs off the northwest side of the island.

2. Crete (1:29)
Crete is another one of Greece’s most popular islands, and for good reason.
At over 95 kilometres wide, Crete is the countries largest island, so it’s no surprise that there is a lot to do here.
If you’re heading to Greece, Crete should be on your itinerary for sure.
3. Corfu (2:26)
A Lush interior, pristine coastline, unique rock formations and a romantic capital city make this one of the most breathtaking islands in the Archipelago.
I recommend renting a boat while you’re in Corfu. It will cost you around €80 per day plus gas, but you don’t need a boat license and you can rip around to different hidden coves and bays to have a slice of paradise to yourself.
4. Zakynthos (3:16)
Number 4 on this list of the best places to visit in Greece is Zakynthos.

I arrived at the port in Mytilini and stayed there for my first night before heading off to Molyvos for 3 nights which was an incredible place! I then headed back to Mytilini for 2 nights where I did a one day trip to Plomari. So much more to see in Lesvos so I would love to come back again soon!

Visiting Lesvos Island in Greece
In this week's episode we're on one of Greece's lesser visited islands, Lesvos. Our favourite town on the island was Petra, but there are lots of hidden villages, bays and beaches to explore.
Lesvos has recently seen tourism numbers plummet due to negative media coverage regarding refugees in Lesvos, but in our experience the island felt safe and there were plenty of visitors enjoying a less hectic Lesvos Island.
From the church of Panagia Glykofilousa to the Eftalou Hot Springs, there are plenty of unique sights for tourists to see in Lesvos. Molyvos Village and Molyvos castle were breathtaking, as is Mytilini and Mytilini castle, while Agiasos Town is famous for pottery.

Although relatively unknown in Greek island terms, it's no secret that the island of Lesvos is one of the most beautiful, but do you know that there’s so much more to discover? Real Lesvos is here to reveal things you really want to know about this magical, authentic Greek island paradise!
The name ‘Lesvos’ is originally taken from the Ancient Greek word Λέσβος Lésbos, meaning “forested” or “woody”. Lesvos, Greece is a beautiful place for relaxation, full of breathtaking views and friendly local faces. Although there are so many wonderfully fun and interesting things to say about Lesvos, we have tried to narrow these down to our top 10 favourite Lesvos facts, so here you go.
Where is it? Northern-Aegean Island of Lesvos
Lesvos is located in the Northern Aegean sea and is the third-largest island in Greece. It is situated across from the Turkish coast, facing from the direction of the North and East. The island of Lesvos is the eighth largest island in the Mediterranean sea, with a population of 84,000 people and spanning an immense 1.632km2. Interestingly, Mytilene, the island’s capital, is in fact also the administrative centre of the Northern Aegean islands.
The Island of Lesvos Has a Long and Interesting History
According to ancient Greek mythology, the patron God of the island was and still remains ‘Lesbos’. Macareus was the very first king and his many daughters offered their names to some of the larger towns which still remain today, including Mytilene, Agamede, Antissa, Arisbe and Issa, all of which are well-known names of towns throughout Lesvos island.
The Island of Lesvos - Many Different Names
The island is infamously known to have several different names and terms used when referring to the island. The Island of Lesvos is not only also referred to as Lesbos - this is due to the translation from Greek - the letter β in the Greek alphabet can translate as a B or a V. The island is also referred to as Mytilene, after its capital, but Lesvos can also be translated to other names such as ‘Macaros edos’ which means ‘the seat of Macar.’ At the end of the Late Bronze Age, the island was called Lazpa as this was the name for the island of Hittite origin. But we will stick to calling it Real Lesvos, like the locals!
Many Areas of Lesvos Have Endangered or Protected Status
The island of Lesvos is a wondrous place for sightseeing and landmarks. Interestingly, the entire landscape of Lesbos is considered as ‘Lesbos Geopark’, as it is a member of the European Geoparks Network since the year 2000, as well as a member of the Global Geoparks Network since 2004. This is due to Lesvos’ incredible local geological heritage, educational projects and its promotion of geotourism. It’s home to a Petrified Forest, basically a vast park of fossilised trees which have been turned to stone. You can see the best examples in the whole of Europe here. It’s awe-inspiring to wander around the network of pathways amongst the huge petrified tree trunks. Bring water on summer days as it can get really hot! The museum in Sigri is also well worth a visit. stone!
There are also a huge number of other protected sites and natural spaces to visit. Interestingly, on Lesvos there are a total of a dozen churches classified as endangered. These churches include; Early Christian Basilica Fantelli Eressos, Church of Agios Stephanos Mantamados, Katholikon of Moni Taxiarchon, Katos Trito, the Church of Agios Nikolaos in Petra and others.
Lesvos, Home of Ouzo!
Lesvos, the home of Ouzo! The term ‘Ouzo’ has an interesting story of origin. In the early 20th century, the word ‘raki’ gradually turned into ‘ouzo’. There are rumours still to this day that both drinks are actually the same - but we know which one we prefer! Visit one of the famous distillery museums on the island and sample this world-renowned spirit. It’s ideal served over ice with some local, traditional food - and make sure you slow down, drinking ouzo should never be rushed!

Molyvos is Greek Island tourism at its best, with the stunning medieval Molyvos castle standing at the top of the cliff overlooking Molyvos town and Molyvos harbour, it's a real tourist magnet and a must visit when on holiday in Lesvos.
