Murray Bridge - A Brief Rail History, Walk Through, & Drone Flight

Let’s go exploring the Murray Bridge railway precinct.

The original iron bridge was the first bridge to span the Murray River. It opened in 1879 with the first train to cross in 1886, linking Adelaide to Melbourne by rail for the first time. Later in 1924, what is considered to be the largest rail bridge in the State was completed to accommodate the growth of rail freight tasks.

The area was known as Mobilong and later as Edwards Crossing, before being renamed as Murray Bridge in 1924, deriving its name from the rail and road bridges.

The historic railway station on Railway Terrace was built in 1886. Railway lines were laid to the wharf in 1886. In 1910, over 35,000 tons of freight was passed across the wharf between the river boats and the railway, up to 16 trains a day would come and go.

Renmark is the largest town in the Riverland region and is located 258 kilometres northeast of Adelaide. This area is best known for its lovely fresh produce, especially oranges and grapes; in fact, it is the largest wine region in Australia.

The historic town of Renmark was established in 1887 on a sweeping bend on the River Murray and has a beautiful and accessible riverfront area. It is a popular holiday destination with cafes, restaurants, pubs and clubs to enjoy the regional produce.

00:00 Introduction

03:54 Paringa Bridge
04:15 Paringa Silo Art

06:25 More things to do in Renmark

During our recent visit to Renmark we started the day at Arrosto Coffee and then wandered along the Matulick Riverfront trail on the banks of the River Murray. We then headed over to Paringa to see the bridge and silo art before venturing out to the Headings Cliffs lookout. We finished the day at Ruston’s Distillery and Rose Garden.

Arrosto Coffee is located in the old Renmark Fire Station and is open daily for coffee, cakes and other treats. You can enjoy your coffee in the fire station-themed cafe or outside in the family-friendly backyard.

The Matulick trail starts at the Visitor Centre and meanders 1.75 kilometres along the riverfront. There are interpretive signs that provide information on historical events and places along the path.

The Renmark Hotel was established in 1897 and is Australia’s first and oldest community-owned hotel. The family-friendly Renmark Club was originally a Gentleman's Club that was built on the edge of the river in 1909.

At the Taylor Riverfront precinct, you can splash in the Harry Clark Water Play area and enjoy lovely views of the River from the 24-metre deck area. The Murray River Queen was built in 1974 and is one of the oldest and largest paddle boats on the River; it is now permanently moored at the wharf and used for boutique accommodation.

This sculpture commemorates David Ruston who was known for his development of roses and was awarded an Order of Australia in 1984 for services to horticulture.

The Paringa Bridge is a suspension bridge built in 1927 it forms part of the Sturt Highway, carrying traffic across the Murray River between Renmark and Paringa. The bridge can be raised to allow large riverboats to pass underneath it.

The Artworks on the Paringa Silo were created and painted by Jack Fran and Sam Brooks; they feature four distinct images linked together by soaring pelicans.

The Headings Cliffs lookout is a 10-minute drive from Paringa, and here you will see the unique, rich colours of the golden limestone cliffs; it's a lovely spot for photographers.

Rustons Distillery is a boutique distillery with a range of gins all carefully handcrafted and distilled onsite. You can also wander around Rustons Rose Garden, one of the largest private rose gardens in the Southern Hemisphere.

Other things you can do in Renmark are the Olivewood Historic Homestead and Museum, The Woolshed Brewery located in the historic 100-year-old shearing sheds of Wilkadene Station, Twenty Third Street Distillery, and Angove’s and Mallee Estate Wineries.

Murray River to Great Ocean Road by drone,ep 80

⁸8Welcome to Murray River to Great Ocean Road by drone.
As my footage on my sd card for go pro became corrupted, I have improvised and turn this video into a drone video, with a few photos I took on my phone.
So Murray River itself is flooding and you can see the result in some of the shots.
Morgan S.A where the Murray River turns south is where you find the old Wharf.
I also stop at many lookouts above the cliffs.
Murray Bridge where the first bridge over the Murray River was built.
Mount Gambier, incredible blue lake there.
Brown Bay Beach for a camp, then into Victoria.
Nelson nice...
Port Fairy...very nice
Great Ocean Road WOW.
All those big formations off the coast, and then the road right on the cliff edge.
What amazing trip that was.
I am heading to Geelong to catch the Spirit of Tasmania, for the first cruise out of the new Geelong terminal.
Tasmania here I come, never been before.
So enjoy this video and see you in Tasmania.
