Journey to Kaliningrad (Königsberg) Exclave - Russia's Outpost in Europe

Follow me on Patreon to see more: Patreon:

I'm taking you on a journey to Kaliningrad. Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave located on the Baltic Sea, sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania. It serves as a strategic outpost for Russia in Europe. Formerly part of East Prussia and known as Königsberg, it was annexed by the Soviet Union after World War II. Today, it remains a unique geopolitical entity, distinct from the Russian mainland. It provides Russia with access to the Baltic Sea and a presence in the European Union, which can influence regional dynamics and politics in the Baltic region.

In this video, I visit a number of settlements in Kaliningrad region with traces of German past. It could happen that some members of YOUR family lived in East Prussia before or soon after the annexation of Konigsberg. Write about this in the comments, it's fascinating to read such stories!

Enjoy the video!

Estonia has more to offer than just its beautiful capital, Tallinn and we wanted to see more.

O NAS:

Witajcie! Witajcie! Na kanale podróżniczym Wędrownych Motyli. Jesteśmy Ania i Marcin.

Inspirować i uczyć. Łączyć ładne kadry z ciekawymi opowieściami. No i najważniejsze dla niektórych: Relaksować i inspirować.

To chyba tyle. Trudno nie przyznać, że bardzo nam zależy, by ten kanał się rozwijał. Dlatego każde dobre słowo i polecenie będzie mile widziane

In today's video we visit:

2. Mangel Halto - a locally popular beach! It has some of the best snorkeling in Aruba with shallow area and a sunken ship to explore!
3. Zeerovers - probably the best restaurant on Aruba! GO EARLY!!! (unfortunately we don't get to try it, but we show you where it is!)
4. Oranjestad - the city in Aruba! We visit the colorful Dutch Caribbean buildings, the Dutch Pancake House, the Renaissance Resort / Flamingo Beach pickup (and explain how to go), the Renaissance & Royal Plaza Malls, the Wharfside Flea Market, Fort Zoutman, DePalm Island lookout, and more!
5. Casibari & Ayo Rock Formations - Unique geologic formations and popular tourist attractions on the island featuring walking trails and petroglyphs created by the first people of Aruba!
6. Where to get groceries in Aruba - seems silly to include, but I like to know where to get the cheapest groceries when I'm traveling!
7. Donkey Sanctuary - A free thing to do in Aruba! You can bring the rescue donkeys apples or carrots to snack on and you'll be surrounded by dozens of cute friends! They also have a gift shop!
8. Balashi Gold Mill Ruins - ruins of one of the former gold smelters on Aruba. Has plenty of walking paths and makes for a fun quick stop!
9. Spanish Lagoon - next to the Balashi ruins! A protected wetland and walking area in Aruba.

11. J.E. Irausquin Blvd - a hotel zone filled with shops and restaurants! We drive through to show you around!
12. Tres Trapi & Boca Catalina Beaches- the best beaches for snorkeling in our opinion! Lots of fish and sea turtles to see! We also have an encounter with an *extremely* rare white green sea turtle here!
13. Alto Vista Chapel & Walking Trail - the oldest church in Aruba and major sight to see! Right next to what we think is the best hiking trail on the island!
14. California Lighthouse and Smoothies - another major sight in Aruba featuring a lighthouse you can visit and the best smoothies on the island! It's also right next to several walking trails and an ATV riding area that we point out.
15. Arikok National Park - a large protected area on the island. It has tons of hiking trails, 4 wheel drive paths, beaches to view (don't swim in them though, it's too rough!), and caves - some of which have more petroglyphs!
16. Baby Beach - a beautiful beach on the southern end of the island!
17. Seroe Colorado - an old lighthouse over a rocky viewpoint of the island!
18. Eagle and Manchebo Beaches - the most popular beaches on Aruba and a great place to catch the sunset!

Building a Bushcraft Sawmill to Build a Log Cabin for Survival in the Wild, Catch and Cook

In this movie I build a bushcraft sawmill to build a log cabin for survival in the wild. The sawmill also functions as a mill, as it was done in the Middle Ages. I showed the mechanisms used in water and windmills. In the mill, I grind wheat and corn grain, catch and cook carp and perch in the hanging wood stove. Welcome to the past to be ready for the future.

6. Street Food 04:49
There are food stalls all over Prague, old Prague ham and chimney cake are the most popular.

7. Lokal 05:25

A chain restaurant all over Prague that offers hearty Czech food and beer.

8. Book Tower at the Municipal Library 05:57

The library may not sound exciting but the Book Tower in the entrance hall is pretty clever. Stick your head through the hole and be transported into an infinite book tunnel. Free to view.

9. La Bodeguita del Medio, Cuban bar 06:20

There are hundreds of bars to choose from, we found this Cuban bar great for strong cocktails and a party vibe with live entertainment.

10. River Boat Tour 06:42

The riverboat tour is a must and the 45-minute river and little Venice trip is a great way to see a different perspective on the city whilst taking a break from walking. The cute wooden boat chugs you across the water and into the canal area which is very picturesque.

11. Charles Bridge 08:43

Steeped in history and dating back to the 14th century, you cannot miss Charles Bridge as it's the most likely how you will get from one side of the river to the other. A tourist mecca it's always busy and full of street artists selling or performing.

12. Piss Sculpture 09:59

One of the more unusual sculptures features two men peeing into a pool of water. You can SMS the sculpture and have it write your text in pee, into the pool!

13. Narrowest Street in Prague 10:37

Listed as the narrowest street in Prague this tiny street is easily missed but if open worth a quick detour to walk down. It uses a traffic light system to get you though!

14. St Nicholas Church Tower 11:00

Climbing towers in Prague can be expensive. This one is only a 100 Czk and gives great views back over the river, Charles Bridge and the Castle. 215 steps and 3 levels get you to the top with great views of the city.

15. Shopping 12:32
There are plenty of shops to keep you occupied if that is what you're into. The ones as you head up the hill towards Prague castle are particularly nice. The streets and architecture around this area is stunning.

16. Prague Castle 13:14

Dating back to the 9th Century, the Castle and grounds are the largest in the world. You will spend a lot of time walking around and can do so for free. Look out for the marching guards as they change sentry posts though out the day!
17. Ride the Tram 16:00
Getting around town on a tram is cheap and a great way to move quickly. It easy to do just make sure you pick up a ticket first and validate it when you get on.

18. Dancing House 17:24

Built in 1996 this contorted building has become an icon of Prague. Now a hotel with a roof top terrece for drinks

19. The head of Kafka 17:56

The amazing, shinning head of Kafka is a must see.

20. King Wenceslas on upside down horse 18:35

An updside down horse rode by King Wenceslas, one of the more bizarre sights!

TOP SITES OF TALLINN - Maarjamäe Palace History Film & Music Museums. Plus Old Town Chocolate Treats

In this vlog we head into the old town to hire some bikes from city bike hire then head off out of the centre of town and along Pirita Tee taking in the scenery (albeit cloudy scenery!) We cycle up to Maarjamäe Palace where there are plenty of spaces to lock your bike up.

After months of lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic we are both more excited than ever to have the opportunity to go inside a museum again.

The Palace park has 3 main attraction buildings:

* Maarjamäe Palace (The History Museum)
* The Film Museum (includes a Cosplay section)
* The Stables (history of pop music)

Restaurant Maarjamäe is also located in the palace (although it was still closed when we visited due to the pandemic).

Then we head back into the Old Town for a chocolate treat at Pierre Chocolaterie! This was a little hidden gem that we found when we walked through Masters' Courtyard, one of the many arches within the Old Town.

A bit of History on the Palace for those of you interested…

Maarjamäe Palace, built in 1874, now belongs to the Estonian History Museum. It has a very colourful history! In 1811, the area was known as Streitberg, when a merchant bought the plot of land and had a sugar factory built there. Later in 1861 it was turned into the first steam mill in Tallinn, when a fire broke out in 1869 the building was destroyed and operations ceased.

By the 1820’s Tallinn had become a famous beach resort so in 1873 Russian Count Anatoli Orlov-Davydov from St. Petersburg bought the plot of land and had the palace built. He used it as his summer manor which he named Marienburg in honour of his wife Maria. The Estonian version of the name is Maarjamäe. During his ownership of the palace the steps went right down to the beach entrance and they would enjoy visits from the Russian Tsar and his family (the Romanovs). In the wake of the 1917 revolution, the Orlov-Davydov family emigrated from Russia and the summer manor was leased.

On 5 January 1933, the most elegant restaurant-hotel in town was opened at Maarjamäe Palace, the Riviera-Palais. Riviera-Palais was closed in 1937 when the summer manor was purchased by the government, which established the Military Aviation School of the Republic of Estonia in the former summer manor. The aviation school stopped operating at Maarjamäe when the Republic of Estonia became occupied.

In 1940, Maarjamäe was taken into the hands of the Soviet Army. When the army left the buildings, the palace was left full of apartments and communal kitchens. On the ground floor, there was a small grocery shop, which used the former fireplace hall as its stock room. This large territory that was once neat and tidy, became derelict and started to go to ruins.

At the end of 1987, a permanent exhibition was opened in the palace, which was now named the History and Revolution Museum of the Estonian SSR, featuring Estonian history from the mid-19th century to the modern era. That was the last permanent exhibition opened in Estonia where it was still compulsory to obey the direct orders from the ideologists of the Estonian Communist Party’s Central Committee of the time.

After the Republic of Estonia regained independence, the entire permanent exhibition was immediately updated.

The renovated stable of Maarjamäe palace is an exhibition and educational environment of the Estonian History Museum. Visitors can visit the exhibition by the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum – Vabaduse kõla! Eesti levimuusika lugu (The sound of freedom! The story of Estonian pop music), which tells the story of pop music from 1901–2001 through the most popular Estonian people, bands, composers, and events of that era.

Upcoming videos

Be sure to tune into our next video as we take you on a tour of the 13th Century UNESCO World Heritage site of Tallinn Old Town. The best preserved medieval city in Northern Europe boasting Gothic Spires, winding cobblestone streets and enchanting architecture!
