MULANJE IS FUN

A Road trip to Mulanje, Malawi 19-02-2021

Mount Mulanje in Mulanje, Malawi

The Mulanje Massif, also known as Mount Mulanje, is a large monadnock in southern Malawi only 65 km east of Blantyre, rising sharply from the surrounding plains of Phalombe, and the tea-growing Mulanje district.

Mulanje has Malawi’s highest peak and the scale of this truly magnificent mountain has to be seen to be appreciated. Its bare rock flanks tower to 3,000 m, dwarfing all that surrounds it. Mulanje is actually a ‘massif’ of syenite and granite covering a massive 650 sq km. Erosion by rivers running along lines of weakness on the rock has resulted in deep clefts striking back into the heart of the mountain. Where they meet, cauldron-like hollows have developed. The resulting landscape is a wondrously beautiful one of basins/plateaux, rivers, gorges, waterfalls and no less than 20 peaks above 2,500 m

Mulanje is known locally as the ‘island in the sky’ because it rises almost sheer from the plains below, which have an average altitude of just 650 m. Unlike some of the world’s peaks that are somewhat ‘hidden’ in surrounding ranges, there is a genuine sense of wonder and awe as you draw closer to Mulanje and see it looming over all that surrounds it.

The height of Mulanje is such that it creates its own climate, and it has a great variety of vegetation reflecting its massive range of altitude. Best known and most impressive of the forest trees is the cedar which takes its name from these mountains. The massif stands at the northern limits of its natural habitat but this does not prevent the Mulanje Cedar rising to over 30 metres. This majestic tree stands straight and proud its 2 m trunk protected but a thick fibrous bark.

Mulanje lies to the east of Blantyre and is easily accessible from south Malawi‘s capital. Visitors can drive round the foot of the massif in a day but even more attractive is to walk, trek, hike and camp on the mountain. There is a large network of paths and trails and choices between quite gentle walking and serious climbing. Visitors can spend a couple of hours taking a walk to some river pools and waterfalls, or spend many days exploring the whole massif. Arrangement can be made to hire camping equipment and the services of guides. Further information about hiking on Mulanje can be found in this folder.

Once on the mountain the vegetation changes with altitude and there’s plenty of wildlife from the klipspringer, a tiny antelope, to various other small mammals and, of course, a variety of birds. The latter include buzzard, the black eagle and countless white-necked ravens. Fishing for trout is possible in the River Lichenya which drains the south-western slopes.

The Mountain Club of Mulanje produced a superb, comprehensive Hiking Guide to Mount Mulanje in early 2017. This can be downloaded as a PDF. The guide contains useful information to plan a hike and is full of route details, photos and maps. It presents 18 hiking routes on the mountain, from short walks around the base to multi-day hikes to the highest points. The routes take hikers to plateaux, peaks, pools and waterfall. The routes are also available on Viewranger.

Unsurprisingly for a vast, foreboding and sometimes unforgiving mountain, local myths and legends abound around Mulanje and visitors are well advised to keep its spirits appeased in the hope of a successful ascent!

Hiking A Grand Traverse On Mount Mulanje | Malawi Travel Vlog

Have you ever heard of a Grand Traverse? I hadn't before I spontaneously said yes to this super difficult trek. I ended up completing my first grand traverse across Mount Mulanje in Malawi. Mount Mulanje is huge, and absolutely stunning, with approximately 63 peaks. I had no idea what I signed up for, and it ended up putting me through SO many challenges. My goal was to complete three peaks in 5 days.

Malawi Travel Guide - Exploring Africa

Malawi Travel Guide - Exploring Africa

Malawi (Chichewa: Malaŵi) is a country in Africa, bordered by Mozambique to the south and east, Tanzania to the north, Zambia to the west. Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa, runs along most of its eastern border. It's often described as the Warm Heart of Africa, referring to the friendliness of the people.

Much of Malawi is plateau, often reaching to 1,000m (3,000 ft), and the temperature in these highlands is moderate, with the hottest period occurring during the autumn rainy season and the coolest and chilliest in winter. The hottest region in the country is the lower Shire River Valley well south of Blantyre. Temperatures along scenic Lake Malawi are generally warm, but with a cooling breeze, especially in the evenings. Winters (May till July) are dry. The rainy season begins in mid-October to early November and generally runs until March.

Malawi’s people are its greatest asset - friendly, welcoming, colourful and vibrant. It's impossible to visit and not become engaged with the people, but there are now opportunities to spend time in real villages (including staying overnight) for a first-hand experience of the cultures, traditions and daily life. This is an option pretty much everywhere in Malawi, and one well worth taking.

There’s also much to see of Malawi’s history, beginning with the pre-history remains of the Karonga district and the Stone Age rock paintings near Dedza. The Cultural & Museum Centre at Karonga is well worth a visit. Elsewhere, the colonial period is preserved in buildings dating from the David Livingstone era and the defeat of the Arab slave trade is well documented in the museums of Blantyre. Among other museums around the country are a Lake Museum at Mangochi, a mission museum at Livingstonia and a postal services museum near Zomba

Cities & Destinations of Malawi :

Lilongwe - the political capital of Malawi and seat of government

Blantyre - economic capital and largest city; Blantyre's a large and thriving city with an interesting downtown, decent nightlife and music, a range of hotels from the elegant to rest houses, and a vibrant street and market culture

Mzuzu - largest town in the Northern Region and a staging-post for transport to Tanzania

Karonga - quickly growing spurred on by the recent development of a uranium mine and a charming town, not far from the intriguing Misuku Hills and a short distance from Lake Malawi

Mangochi - medium-sized town, formerly known as Fort Johnston, at the southern end of Lake Malawi where it empties into the Shire River and a jumping-off point for the resorts and hostels up the coast of Lake Malawi, on the way to peninsular Cape Maclear
Monkey Bay - a popular large village as you head up the Lake Road from Mangochi toward Cape Maclear

Nkhata Bay - a rocky bay towards the north of the lake - check into one of the lodges and you could be here for a while.

Nkhotakota on the shores of Lake Malawi in the Central Region, is where the explorer David Livingston sat down with the Swahili Arab slave traders to attempt to negotiate an end to the slave trade. Nkhotakota was a slave entrepot, from which slaves were ferried across Lake Malawi to the eastern shore to resume their travel over land to what is now the Tanzanian coast. Nkhotakota is a compact and fascinating town, old in its way and true to the ethnic diversity of this region of Malawi. The place is renowned amongst the tourists for its unspoilt golden sandy beaches north of Nkhotakota. It is home to several small family-run resorts.

Zomba is the old colonial capital of Malawi and is noted for its British colonial architecture, the University of Malawi, and the remarkable Zomba Plateau which rises immediately west of the city.

How to Summit Mulanje Sapitwa Peak, Malawi, Ep 177

This is a 3-day trek in the Mulanje range to summit Sapitwa, the highest peak. It starts from the Likhubula gate, heads up the Skyline trail to reach the basecamp at Chisepo Hut. The following day I summit and return to the hut for lunch. Then spend the afternoon hiking to the Chamber Hut for the the night. The following day I return to the Likhubula gate via the Chapaluka route.

Trip Details:

Day1.
Started from the DDAP Cottage parking area (Likhubula Forestry gate), following the Skyline route to the Chamba Basin, across the Knife Edge gully and up to the crest of the Chisepo valley (5.5 hours). Note that this track is steeper than the alternate (Chapaluka) and more exposed to the sun.

Then over the crest and into the Chisepo valley and on to the hut (1.5 hours). This section will be re-traced on the return from the Chisepo hut tomorrow afternoon.

Day 2.
To the Summit: Left Chisepo hut at 4:40 am following the path behind the hut up into the granite slabs and boulders to the ridge line (1 hard hour). This section is the hardest. Then up and down for an additional 2.5 hours to reach the peak. Follow the red paint marks. Two additional difficult parts. Note there is a camping spot just below the summit (with a cave) and two small camp spots on the actual summit.

Then back to the hut for lunch before setting off towards yesterdays Knife Edge Chisepo gully (part 2 of Day 1 trek). Then back into the Chambe Valley and on to the Chambe Hut for the evening. The entire stretch took 2.5 hours.

Day 3.
Easy skirt of the Chambe Valley back to the Malerebe River and then return to the CCAP Cottage via the Chapaluka River Route (and the Likhubula Falls). Total return time of 3 hours. This route is well shaded.

MOUNT MULANJE | MALAWI | CENTRAL AFRICA

My Easter trip- Mount Mulanje - Malawi (Central Africa)

Mount Mulanje Grand Traverse

The Grand Traverse is an epic trek that crosses the full length of Mount Mulanje and touches Sapitwa, its highest point. The route takes you from Mulanje town on the south-west of the mountain to Phalombe on the north-east.

To make it more fun, we added three more peaks, although we failed to do the third one due to bad weather.
