Strada Napoleonica
Discovering Trieste also means discovering The Carso, a steep limestone plateau that follows the Gulf of Trieste and the Slovenia border, is perfect for picnicking, hiking, biking (including e-biking) and rock climbing or just picnicking. There are half-a-dozen trails, but the Strada Napoleonica is the perfect introduction. Take a number 4 bus from Piazza Oberdan to the Opicina obelisk and begin a bracing 5km clifftop hike to the village of Prosecco (it gave its name to what is now one of the world’s most popular wines, though production is now concentrated 100km west in Veneto). Like all Carso hamlets it has an osmiza, a pop-up cantina serving vino for under €1 a glass. Prosecco’s Osmiza Verginella is one of the rare ones open throughout the year, with incredible views down the wild coastline.
Trattoria alla Sorgente
Trieste is excellent for seafood lovers, with the freshest produce arriving straight from the Adriatic, cooked simply and at very reasonable prices in the many traditional osterie and trattorie. With its rustic wooden tables and sunny terrace, the friendly Trattoria alla Sorgente is an excellent for lunch choice, but popular with locals, so call first to book. The abundant antipasti misti (€14), with tender octopus, plump scallops, grilled sardines and creamy baccalà is enough for two, while the creative pastas include chunky paccheri (tubes) with baby squid and cherry tomatoes. Closer to the docks are two other top addresses: the lively Osteria Istriano, for alici impanati (€10), tiny breaded anchovies, or the more elegant Trattoria Nero di Seppia, which has a chocolate panna cotta (€6.50) to die for.

Another of Trieste’s important symbols of freedom, the Posto delle Fragole (strawberry patch) is a bar, restaurant and cultural centre in the grounds of Trieste’s former psychiatric hospital, in the extensive Parco San Giovanni above the city. Some 45 years ago, this was the first Italian city to end the forced enclosure of mentally ill people, opening the hospital gates to all in the 1970s. Today students attend university courses here, and many of the distinctive pastel-yellow Liberty buildings are venues for the performing arts, cinema, a radio station (Radio Fragola), concerts, and late-night summer parties. The park and its famous rose gardens are easily reached on the number 12 bus from the city centre.
Stazione Rogers
Trieste comes alive in the early evening when aperitivo time kicks off, with Aperol and Campari spritz from €3 with free snacks. There are plenty of bars in the old town, but a fun offbeat address is this once-abandoned modernist petrol station – designed in 1953 by Ernesto Rogers, editor of Domus magazine and cousin of Richard Rogers. Today, instead of serving petrol, it serves alternative culture for the city, and is especially popular with Trieste’s large student population. Inside, there is a venue for performances, exhibitions and concerts, while the forecourt is a sprawling outdoor bar overlooking the marina, that stays open till 2am, with DJs and live music.
Boat trip to Muggia
A visit to Trieste has to include a boat trip, and a good option is the Delfino Verde ferry that links Trieste and the Venetian port of Muggia. The journey only takes 20 minutes as it hugs the bay towards the frontier with Slovenia, and Muggia is a gem, with its tiny harbour filled with fishing boats. Have a drink at the local watering hole, Ai Fumi, then, further down the street, eat a classic fritto misto at Osteria al Corridoio, owned by Sabrina, whose son Mauro is the fisherman.
Bagno Alla Lanterna
At this historic public beach, there is proof that a wall does not have to divide but can actually give liberty to people. In a unique Trieste story, male and female bathers are divided by a wall at the tiny Lanterna beach, known popularly as El Pedochin. This may sound sexist and politically incorrect but I can assure you that the opposite is true. A local documentary presented at Cannes in 2016, The Last Resort, explains how the division lets bathers be themselves. Ask anyone here – teenagers, mums with kids, retired people – no one would ever get rid of the wall. The best way to understand is to come and see for yourself. Entrance is a symbolic €1, and of course there is a bar just outside where everyone has lunch or an evening aperitivo together.

The Province of Trieste is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land in southeast Friuli Venezia Giulia, between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia. This is an extraordinary destination for its historic treasures, artworks and its middle-European character. Off Trieste's coast is its broad Gulf, with numerous tiny bays, small harbors and breathtaking reefs; and of course Miramare Castle is accompanied by the splendid blue of the sea.The area of Trieste is characterized by the steep karstic landscape continually revealing different, amazing and charming features. Close to the coast is a rocky moor with Mediterranean vegetation, where the Bora wind blows, while inland are hills with hollows and scrubs. Protected areas include the Val Rosandra Nature Reserve; the Marine Reserve of Miramare, within a coastal sea landscape of sharp rocks and a wide variety of underwater flora and fauna; and the Falesie di Duino Nature Reserve, with white cliffs overhanging the sea. The charm of the area resides not only in its natural traits, but also in the elegant city of Trieste, where the Habsburg influence is noticeable; the inland small towns with their longstanding traditions; and other quaint touristic draws on the coast - countless gems set within this tiny strip of land.

#1 - Sant' Antonio Taumaturgo
The church of Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo (commonly called the church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo ), is the main religious building of the Borgo Teresiano and of the center of Trieste [1] .
The project of the church dates back to 1808 , but work began only in 1825 . The facade of the building is characterized by six Ionic columns . Still on the main façade, in the attic, there are six statues sculpted by Francesco Bosa in 1842 , depicting Saint Giusto , Saint Sergius , Saint Servolo , Saint Mauro, Saint Eufemia and Saint Tecla. The church is located in the square of the same name, near the Canale Grande .
#2 Temple of Holy Trinity
The Orthodox community in Trieste was established in 1748 but it wasn't until 1751 when Empress Maria Theresa allowed free practice of religion for Orthodox Christians, this prompted immigration of Serbian traders from Herceg Novi, Trebinje and Sarajevo to Trieste.[1] In 1781, the community split into two. The first was Greek community and second, from which there is today's Serbian parish, was the community which embraced the Orthodox South Slavic nations.[1] From 1994[2] up to administrative changes within the dioceses of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the parish in Trieste fell within the Metropolitanate of Zagreb and Ljubljana. Since 2011, it is under the jurisdiction of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Austria and Switzerland.

#3 Della Borsa Square
Piazza della Borsa is one of the main squares of Trieste. Also known as the second city square parlor has been the economic centre of the city throughout the 19th century.
Its present name derives from an obvious name due to the mansion built in 1806 by architect Antonio maceratese Mollari to accommodate the activities of stock traders. This building, which distinguishes the square which is one of the most important examples of neoclassical monuments in Trieste, is currently home of the Camera di commercio, industria, artigianato e agricoltura di Trieste, and is also called the old Bag.
In front of the Palace of the Chamber of Commerce a column supporting the stone figure of an emperor. Is the column of Leopold I of Austria whose son, Charles VI, established in Trieste porto franco.
#5 Trieste Roman Theater
Trieste's Roman theater is located in Trieste at the foot of the San Giusto hill , right in the center of the city, on the edge of the old city, between Via Donota and Via del Teatro Romano.
At the time of its construction, the theater was outside the city walls and by the sea, which at that time reached as far as that area. On its steps, built also taking advantage of the natural slope of the hill, from 3,500 to 6,000 spectators could be accommodated, depending on the various sources. The construction of the theater dates back to the end of the 1st century BC and was extended at the beginning of the 2nd century AD Probably it was built by the Trieste Quinto Petronio Modesto , procurator and bells of the emperor Trajan , mentioned in several inscriptions, which according to other sources instead he only took care of renovation work.
Over the centuries the theater was then hidden by the houses that rose above it. Considered lost, it was identified in 1814 by the architect Pietro Nobile , but only in 1938 it was brought to light during the demolition of a part of the old city. The statues and inscriptions found in the excavations are kept at the Lapidario Tergestino at the Castello di san Giusto at the Civico Museo del Castello. Triest ist so nah und liegt meistens irgendwie wo am Weg. Doch meistens nehmen wir uns nicht Zeit für kleine Umwege. Ich habe den kleinen Umweg spontan als Ziel gewaehlt eines Kurztrips gewählt und möchte euch nun zeigen was euch erwartet.

Muggia is a little village between Trieste and the Slovenian border. Its cozy and mazy streets are very picturesque, and there’s plenty of things to do!

This place is full of shops, cafes and, obviously, boats! Come to take a look at it!
1:05 - Old City Center - Muggia arose as a fortified village between VIII and VI century.
This is the perfect location to take a break from city life.

The Castle, built in 1374, overlooks the harbour from an elevated position and guess what? There is someone who lives in here!
The Castle is owned by the sculptor Villi Bossi and his wife Gabriella. The Castle have changed during the years and here’s a fun fact: the inhabitants of Muggia have gradually used the Castle’s original blocks of sandstone to build their homes.

When visiting Muggia, there’s an event you don’t want to miss which is the Carnival of Muggia or Carneval de Muja in the local dialect. The carnival's origins are in the Venetian tradition and influences from the Istrian peninsula: a great show that every year offers allegorical floats and coluorful masks.

Muggia (Venetian, Triestine dialect: Muja; German: Mulgs Friulian: Mugle; Slovene: Milje) is an Italian town and comune in the extreme south-east of the Province of Trieste in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia on the border with Slovenia. Lying on the eastern flank of the Gulf of Trieste in the northern Adriatic Sea, Muggia is the only Italian port town in Istria. Di porto in porto lungo la costa triestina, dal Mandracchio di #Muggia alla darsena dell’arciduca Massimiliano d’Asburgo. Un percorso che inizia con l’architettura industriale del Porto Vecchio di #Trieste che ha generato una città-altra rispetto alla frenesia del centro. Qui la lingua è quella del silenzio, dai tratti cinematografici. Parte così il nuovo episodio dedicato al #FVG (Friuli Venezia Giulia) che prosegue con un tuffo nei colori di Muggia, la piccola Venezia, nota anch’essa per il suo antico Carnevale, appoggiata al confine con la Slovenia. Tra calli e piazzette dai colori caldi, l’atmosfera è rilassata e la cucina è ottima. Qui ho assaggiato per la prima volta le alici in savòr, deliziose e frizzanti come l’aria del golfo!
L’esuberanza del #CastellodiMiramare, cantata anche da Carducci, conclude il viaggio lungo la costa triestina. Il parco della dimora di Massimiliano non è altro che un’estensione dei suoi interni, il manifesto di un uomo che amava viaggiare.
