Ep14: Moquegua Peru to Arica in Chile, 216kms of desert, lonely shrines, escaped murderers & bombs
After thick fog lifted, which almost made me delay for day after the dangerous fog me and Angelo rode through enroute to Arequipa - I ride from the Hotel El Mirador in Moquegua, Peru, to Arica, in the extreme north of Chile, passing some strange sights, including lonely roadside memorials, signs warning of the dangers of STDs, a conical hill, a cactus memorial, and a miniature shrine to the Virgen del Carmen. Refuelling in Tacna, I get through the immigration control post at Santa Rosa to arrive at Sunny Days hostel, where there is much commotion due to the road being cut and immigration post closed due to the mass breakout of dangerous criminals from Puno - where I had just come from, and you may remember in Episode 12 we almost turned around and went back to Puno due to the thick fog - and the flooding of the Panamerican Highway with landmines, and how Pinochet's legacy not only forced the re-routing of the Dakar Rally, but continues to claim lives of those who stray from safe desert trails. Its sad about the landmines, but there is a program cleaning up the mess, slowly. I later worked in Arica for around 18 months, and even then, years later you could regularly hear the booms as the Chilean Army was detonating them to destroy them. And every now and again you read in the news about people being killed by them, but they always were crossing at some non-approved clandestine track.

Ep13: Arequipa to Moquegua via the arid Chala region - floods, tunnels, strange aromas & an accident
Day 4 of my big trip, Angelo sees me off at the edge of town before he rides back to Cusco, but not before we had to ford a flooded street and were witness to, and perhaps the cause of, a truck - auto accident. Then its a slow descent along the Panamericana Sur route into the Region Chala - technically a desert, but often shrouded in fog. Tunnels and a few strange sights before deciding best to retire early after covering only half the distance I planned, staying the night in Moquegua, a town with a unique aroma, where I shot gigapans and a timelapse.

Ilo es una ciudad del suroeste del Perú, capital de la provincia homónima en la Región de Moquegua, situada a orillas del Océano Pacífico al sur de la desembocadura del río Osmore y al norte de Punta Coles.
La ciudad de Ilo, se encuentra localizada dentro de la provincia del mismo nombre, en la región de Moquegua; Ilo, es la capital de la provincia en la cual se ubica. Esta ciudad costera, presenta al puerto de Ilo, que es considerado, el octavo, de mayor importancia, en su clase, dentro del territorio peruano.
Entre los diferentes atractivos turísticos con los que cuenta esta ciudad, se hallan sitios como sus playas; entre aquellas, destaca Playa Tronco de Oro; dicho balneario, se encuentra a tan solo 25 Kilómetros, tomando como punto de referencia al puerto de la ciudad de Ilo. Playa Tronco de Oro, presenta una línea costera que bordea los 700 metros y es un destino ideal para quienes tienen interés por pescar o nadar.
Otra playa del circuito de Ilo, es Playa Pocoma; esta playa se encuentra a tan solo 18 kilómetros hacia el norte de la ciudad; Playa Pocoma, presenta unas hermosas aguas de tonos turquesa; las olas de su mar, son ideales para practicar deportes como el surf; en esta playa, además, se pueden practicar la pesca submarina y montar campamentos.
Playa Piedras Negras, también forma parte de los balnearios que se hallan próximos a Ilo; esta playa se encuentra a poco más de 21 Km del casco urbano; aquella es una de las favoritas para los que practican el surf, ya que presenta un oleaje que llega a contar con olas de hasta tres metros de altura. La playa de Piedras Negras, es también un interesante punto para acampar, y realizar excursiones.
