Mali is the eighth-largest country in Africa, with an area of just over 1,240,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi). The population of Mali is 19.1 million.67% of its population was estimated to be under the age of 25 in 2017.Its capital is Bamako. The sovereign state of Mali consists of eight regions and its borders on the north reach deep into the middle of the Sahara Desert, while the country's southern part, where the majority of inhabitants live, features the Niger and Senegal rivers. The country's economy centers on agriculture and mining. Some of Mali's prominent natural resources include gold, being the third largest producer of gold in the African continent and salt.

Bandiagara Cliffs (Dogon Country) in Mopti, Mali
Mali’s Dogon Country can feel like a deliciously African evocation of the remote. Dogon villages have no electricity. Nor are they linked by a single paved road.
THE BANDIAGARA ESCARPMENT SLICES ACROSS the hot and dusty lands of the Sahel in Mali for over 100 miles. In itself, Bandiagara is a wonder of nature. The cliffs rise over 1,500 feet in the air at times and range in geographic diversity from desert to cascading waterfalls plummeting onto the plains below.
However, almost more impressive than the landscape are the Dogon homes carved into the escarpment. Although a range of people lived in the area, for over 600 years the Dogon people have made Southern Mali their home, carving everything from simple rectangular homes into the cliff walls to detailed Mosque’s made out of mud and stick. The Dogon’s contribution to the region is immense.
The entire concept of their village is stunning, as homes hang from the cliffs defying all natural bounds of the traditional city. Some of the villages can hardly even be seen as they blend seamlessly with the rocky cliffs that surround them. Others are only noticeable from their thatched roofs, protruding from the sand and rock.
Every aspect of the Bandiagara is strongly punctuated. The escarpment itself rises dustily from the sparse Sahel vegetation below and the homes of the Dogon villages dot the cliffs for miles until the escarpment terminates at the highest peak in Mali, Hombori Tondo.
There are thirty Dogon villages in total across the escarpment and a multitude of Dogon sites aside from the houses. The dramatic landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989.
Much of the Dogon’s original cultural traditions still exist, including mask rituals and cave shrines. Visitors to the region can also stay directly in the Dogon villages along the escarpment, allowing for a truly unique hostel experience.

Finding a way from Mopti to Timbuktu, Mali
Mopti on the Niger river is the first, or last major port town from Timbuktu. After over 2 weeks of traveling overland from Accra Ghana we arrived. Finding transport to Timbuktu would not be that easy. It took three days. We originally planned on a public pinasse to stay with our adventure of all local transport, but even for us hard core travellers upon seeing the pinasses we said, no way. So we found a car. During this time the Tuaregs were known as the bandits of the Sahara. Our driver drove fast, really fast.

Top 10 Mali Cities By Population
Mali, officially known as the Republic of Mali, is a landlocked country located in West Africa. Djenné and its great mud mosque ???????? Mali
The history of Djenné is closely linked with that of Timbuktu. Between the 15th and 17th centuries much of the trans-Saharan trade in goods such as salt, gold, and slaves that moved in and out of Timbuktu passed through Djenné. Both towns became centres of Islamic scholarship. Djenné's prosperity depended on this trade and when the Portuguese established trading posts on the African coast, the importance of the trans-Saharan trade and thus of Djenné declined.
The town is famous for its distinctive adobe architecture, most notably the Great Mosque which was built in 1907 on the site of an earlier mosque. To the south of the town is Djenné-Djenno, the site of one of the oldest known towns in sub-Saharan Africa. Djenné together with Djenné-Djenno were designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

Grabé estas imágenes en Mopti con ocasión de dos viajes, uno en 2006 y otro en 2007. Por suerte, antes de que europeos, norteamericanos y cataríes destrozaran Libia (2011), con lo que se incrementó gravemente el caos y la inseguridad en la región del Sahel —lo que aún continúa (2020).
Por si fuera poco, el calentamiento global ha hecho más escasos los pastos y las tierras fértiles, avivando los enfrentamientos entre pastores fulani y cultivadores dogón.
Actualmente (2020) se desaconseja viajar a esta región, ya que la inseguridad es alta.
