Before the First World War Trieste was the most important sea port of the Austrian Empire, but now it is often overlooked as an Italian hidden gem. Being is a deep-water port; the ships sail right up to the city. They could not get closer. It has therefore been fought over throughout history and has been a maritime gateway for Germany, Austria, and Central Europe. Sine 1939 it has belonged to Italy. As such it is multicultural, it is well-developed and has much history and many churches. Slovenia is only 8km away, and Croatia is just 30km away. There is a free elevator to the top of San Giusto Hill if you do not want the climb, Jean walks up from the Roman Theatre, past the 14th Century Cucherna Tower. After the castle and Cathedral, she walks down through the Johann Joachim Winckelman Museum and Gardens towards the James Joyce Museum and the Statue of Joyce at the canal, the old shipping port. There you can relax and have a drink or lunch. She finishes by showing us the Aquarium, the pier and the old lighthouse near the ship, but found by turning right as you leave the ship and step ashore. Places to see in ( Civitanova Marche - Italy )
Civitanova Marche is a comune in the Province of Macerata in the Italian region Marche, located about 40 kilometres southeast of Ancona and about 25 km east of Macerata. Civitanova Marche borders the municipalities: Montecosaro, Porto Sant'Elpidio, Potenza Picena and Sant'Elpidio a Mare. It counts the hamlets (frazioni) of Civitanova Alta, Fontespina, Maranello, Risorgimento, San Marone and Santa Maria Apparente.
Prehistorical settlements discovered by archaeologists show us that people used to live in Civitanova since Palaeolithic. Civitanova was founded probably around the 8th century BC as Cluana by the Piceni Italic tribe, at the mouth of the Chienti river. The Romans captured it in 268 BC, and, in 50 AD, founded a new settlement, Cluentis Vicus (the current frazione of Civitanova Alta) on a hill near the sea. During the Barbaric invasion, old Cluana was destroyed by the Visigoths and much of the population took refuge in the Vicus.
Ducal Palace Cesarini Sforza has been built in the 16th century upon the remains of a pre-existing building. The palace has been reshaped in the 19th century. Inside some Pellegrino Tibaldi frescoes of the 16th century have been conserved. The year of the first renovation coincides to the cession of Civitanova, in 1551, by Pope Julius III to the Roman noble Giuliano Cesarini for a debt contracted by the Apostolic Camera. During the following century the palace gets named Palazzo Ducale Cesarini-Sforza following the marriage between Livia Cesarini e Federico Sforza di Santa Fiora which took place in 1674. The palace, recently restructured, is situated in Piazza della Libertà of Civitanova Alta.
Palazzo Cesarini-Sforza was built in 1862 upon the remains of a 15th-century fortress. The Palace overlooks Piazza XX Settembre where at the bottom there are gardens which conserve the fountain that once decorated the centre of the square. Built in 1867 according to the project of engineer Guglielmo Prosperi and realized by the Basile brothers, it has three floors oriented towards the square of Civitanova Alta. Ground floor, characterized by a loggia with the ingress at the centre, hosts the Roman gravestone where ancient Civitanova name Cluentensis Vicus is carved. Wide stairs lead to the board room frescoed with Aeneid depictions dedicated to the poet Annibal Caro as well as portraits of noble citizens.
Over the gardens of Piazza XX Settembre there are the elegant liberty buildings of Lido Cluana, reworked during the fascist period with the add of fascist flagpoles that can be observed even today. Villa Conti is a liberty villa built in 1910, completely destroyed during World War II and consequently rebuilt. Located between Civitanova Alta and Civitanova Porto, characterized by a park with an Italian garden. Next to the villa there is a neo-gothic church which is the reproduction of Cappuccini Nuovi of Macerata.
Villa Eugenia is located on San Marone hamlet, commissioned by Napoleon I in 1797. The villa is currently in miserable conditions, and because of this it can't be visited by anyone. Empress Eugenia Montjo, wife of Napoleon III used to live there. Perfectly conserved, these walls are a good example of military reinessance architecture. MONTE SAN GIUSTO (MACERATA, MARCHE, ITALY)
Monte San Giusto, comune di 8145 abitanti, provincia di Macerata, Marche, Italia. I primi insediamenti nell'area sangiustese documentati storicamente risalgono all'epoca romana (età di Nerva 96-98 d.C.) con il nome di Mons Iustitiæ (altro possibile nome antico è Telusiano) distrutto durante le invasioni barbariche nel III secolo. Con l'arrivo dei longobardi passò sotto il controllo del ducato di Spoleto e fu dotato di un castello, rimpiazzato poi dalla chiesa di S.Agostino. Costruito in zona Monte Reale questo toponimo indicherebbe un territorio fiscale posto sotto il diretto controllo del re per la sua importanza strategica, dato che per Mons Iustitiæ passavano le strade romane provenienti da Urbs Salvia al mare, da Firmum a Pausulæ e da Falerio a Pausulæ. Grazie a questo posizionamento geografico favorevole fu epicentro degli insediamenti romani intorno ad esso e questa centralità fu mantenuta per tutto il Medioevo divenendo nel XII secolo libero comune. Monte San Giusto raggiunse il suo massimo splendore dopo l'elezione a vescovo di Chiusi del sangiustese Niccolò Bonafede, che trasformò la città natale in una vera e propria corte rinascimentale. In questo contesto il palazzo fortezza Bonafede rappresenta l'opera architettonica più importante di Monte San Giusto. Fu fatto costruire dal Bonafede all'inizio del Cinquecento e vi si accede dal portale d'ingresso realizzato nel 1524, opera dello scalpellino anconetano Franco Pesimoti. Il corpo centrale del fabbricato, ispirato al Palazzo Venezia di Roma, è realizzato su una base piramidale con facciata in laterizio con finiture e cornici in pietra, abbellita da finestre a croce guelfa. Il cortile si ispira a quello del palazzo ducale di Urbino. Nella stanza denominata la stanza del vescovo, si conservano affreschi attribuiti al pittore emiliano Amico Aspertini (1457-1522). Oggi è sede del municipio e durante il recente restauro sono stati riscoperti degli affreschi attribuiti al pittore spagnolo Johannes Hispanus. #1 - Sant' Antonio Taumaturgo
The church of Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo (commonly called the church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo ), is the main religious building of the Borgo Teresiano and of the center of Trieste [1] .
The project of the church dates back to 1808 , but work began only in 1825 . The facade of the building is characterized by six Ionic columns . Still on the main façade, in the attic, there are six statues sculpted by Francesco Bosa in 1842 , depicting Saint Giusto , Saint Sergius , Saint Servolo , Saint Mauro, Saint Eufemia and Saint Tecla. The church is located in the square of the same name, near the Canale Grande .
#2 Temple of Holy Trinity
The Orthodox community in Trieste was established in 1748 but it wasn't until 1751 when Empress Maria Theresa allowed free practice of religion for Orthodox Christians, this prompted immigration of Serbian traders from Herceg Novi, Trebinje and Sarajevo to Trieste.[1] In 1781, the community split into two. The first was Greek community and second, from which there is today's Serbian parish, was the community which embraced the Orthodox South Slavic nations.[1] From 1994[2] up to administrative changes within the dioceses of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the parish in Trieste fell within the Metropolitanate of Zagreb and Ljubljana. Since 2011, it is under the jurisdiction of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Austria and Switzerland.

#3 Della Borsa Square
Piazza della Borsa is one of the main squares of Trieste. Also known as the second city square parlor has been the economic centre of the city throughout the 19th century.
Its present name derives from an obvious name due to the mansion built in 1806 by architect Antonio maceratese Mollari to accommodate the activities of stock traders. This building, which distinguishes the square which is one of the most important examples of neoclassical monuments in Trieste, is currently home of the Camera di commercio, industria, artigianato e agricoltura di Trieste, and is also called the old Bag.
In front of the Palace of the Chamber of Commerce a column supporting the stone figure of an emperor. Is the column of Leopold I of Austria whose son, Charles VI, established in Trieste porto franco.
#5 Trieste Roman Theater
Trieste's Roman theater is located in Trieste at the foot of the San Giusto hill , right in the center of the city, on the edge of the old city, between Via Donota and Via del Teatro Romano.
At the time of its construction, the theater was outside the city walls and by the sea, which at that time reached as far as that area. On its steps, built also taking advantage of the natural slope of the hill, from 3,500 to 6,000 spectators could be accommodated, depending on the various sources. The construction of the theater dates back to the end of the 1st century BC and was extended at the beginning of the 2nd century AD Probably it was built by the Trieste Quinto Petronio Modesto , procurator and bells of the emperor Trajan , mentioned in several inscriptions, which according to other sources instead he only took care of renovation work.
Over the centuries the theater was then hidden by the houses that rose above it. Considered lost, it was identified in 1814 by the architect Pietro Nobile , but only in 1938 it was brought to light during the demolition of a part of the old city. The statues and inscriptions found in the excavations are kept at the Lapidario Tergestino at the Castello di san Giusto at the Civico Museo del Castello. Nowadays it is still used occasionally for outdoor summer shows.

Trieste Cathedral (Italian: Basilica cattedrale di San Giusto Martire), dedicated to Saint Justus, is a Roman Catholic cathedral and the main church of Trieste, in northern Italy. It is the seat of the Bishop of Trieste.
In 1899 Pope Leo XIII granted it the status of a basilica minor.
The first religious edifice on the site was built in the 6th century on some Roman propylaea, using part of the existing structure. Perhaps the entrance to a monument, this was commonly known as the Capitoline Temple, as a pyramidal altar with the symbols of the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva) had been found inside it.
Of the hall there remains part of the mosaic floor, integrated into the present-day floor, which contains markings of the outer walls of the early Christian building. Soon after it was opened for worship, the church was destroyed in the Lombard invasion.
Between the 9th and 11th centuries, two basilicas were erected on the ruins of the old church, the first dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and the second, the cathedral, to Saint Justus (San Giusto). The original design of the latter building was subsequently lengthened. In the 14th century the two basilicas were joined by means of the demolition of one nave of either basilica and the construction of a simple asymmetrical façade, dominated by a delicately worked Gothic rose window, as ornate as the new bell tower, using the Romanesque debris stones found on the site and friezes of arms.
Among the works of historical interest in the cathedral are the apsidal mosaics depicting Our Lady of the Assumption and Christ between Saints Justus and Servolus, laid by master craftsmen from Veneto in the 12th-13th centuries. The small 14th-century church of San Giovanni (Saint John), the old baptistry) on the left and San Michele al Carnale on the right, by the entrance to the museum, complete a fine medieval churchyard.
In the square in front of the church is an altar commemorating the consecration and laying down of the arms of the 3rd Army, a column with a halberd and a monument to those who died in the First World War.
Archaeological excavations carried out here in the 1930s laid bare the remains of the Roman forum and civic building constructed on two colonnaded floors with two apses. Two lower-floor columns have been reconstructed.

One destination that’s been at the very top of our travel bucket list for a while now is Matera, and on this trip to Italy, we were determined to make it happen!
Nicknamed “the stone city”, Matera has been quite literally dug out of the rock, and it’s a sight you won’t soon forget. Set on the slope of a rocky ravine, the landscape is dominated by cave dwellings, zigzagging staircases, and early churches that hold some incredible frescoes once you set foot inside.
During our visit, we stayed in the “sassi”, which is the ancient town, and in our opinion, the best way to soak in the vibe of this place.
Now in this video, we’re going to take you on a tour of the city and show you some of the things you can see, do and eat when you visit Matera.
Matera is well-known for its rupestrian churches, carved into the rock and covered in frescoes.
We first stopped by Chiesa Rupestre di San Pietro Barisano, which is the largest rock church in the city of Matera.
We wanted to show you the frescoes, so we continued to Convento di Sant’Agostino, a church and convent dating back to the late 16th Century. We started walking uphill via a series of staircases and winding streets, until we found ourselves in front of Matera Cathedral.
The rocky landscape we noticed is called Murgia (MoorJa) National Park and it’s an archaeological site with cliffs, gorges & caves.
Let’s take a quick break to introduce you to Materan cuisine. Like most of the establishments in Matera, this restaurant was set in a cave and we ate pasta, wine & dessert?
We spent a lot of time visiting cave churches, but for a look at how locals lived in these troglodyte dwellings, we visited Casa Grotta.
The Sassi District is a made up of a network of dwellings carved into the steep slopes of the valley walking into the Casa Grotta.
We visited Palombaro Lungo, a massive water cistern that sits directly under Matera’s main square.
After visiting Palombaro Lungo, we also found ourselves in front of the ruins of Chiesa del Santo Spirito. The church sits beneath Piazza Vittorio Veneto where you can make out frescoes on the walls.
Continuing our quest for Materan cuisine, we ended up at Ristorante Nadi - another cave restaurant that we stumbled upon by chance to see if we could get through a 4 course meal.
Our final recommendation for Matera would be to explore the city at night. Matera looks magical between sunset and blue hour and it was a pleasure to wander around with camera in hand.

W czasach starożytnych nosił nazwę Piazza San Pietro , następnie zmienił nazwę na Piazza Grande , zaś w okresie austriackim nazwę zmieniono na Piazza Francesco Giuseppe , od imienia cesarza Franciszka Józefa z Austrii . Swoją obecną nazwę przyjął w 1918 roku, kiedy miasto zostało przyłączone do Włoch.
Prostokątny w planie kwadrat otwiera się z jednej strony nad Zatoką Triesteńską i jest otoczony licznymi budynkami i budynkami użyteczności publicznej. Z placu wychodzą biura różnych organów: ratusz w Trieście , budynek Rady Regionalnej Friuli Venezia Giulia i prefektura stolicy.
