Banos Travel Guide - Exploring beautiful Ecuador
Baños (de Agua Santa) is a small city in the Andean highlands of Ecuador under the smoke of volcano Tungurahua. Its name, which is Spanish for Baths (of sacred water), comes from the famous hydrothermal springs in the area. It's equally popular with foreigners as with Ecuadorians, and is known as the adventure capital of Ecuador. The streets are lined with hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, and tour agents. Although it is very touristy, lots of people love it, more for the activities and surroundings than for the city itself. It's an important hub for outdoor sports and jungle tours.
Getting around is easy, just walk. Nowhere is more than a 15 minute walk from where you start and usually even less. It is relatively flat in the city centre. Also check out the mountain biking section should you wish to explore further afield. There are also plenty of taxis around should you need one. Baños is known as the Gateway to the Amazon, as it is the last city still located in the mountain region before reaching the jungle and other towns that are located in the Amazon River basin.
Baños is located at an elevation of 1,820 metres (5,971 feet) on the northern foothills of the Tungurahua volcano, whose activity has been characterized by frequent powerful ash explosions and lava flows that can be seen from Banos. The city is also a Roman Catholic religious center, as some Catholic believers say that the Virgin Mary appeared nearby a waterfall. Due to this belief, a sculpture of the virgin, called Virgen de Agua Santa, was placed in the city's cathedral.
Along with the town Pillaro, Baños is known as a good starting point for exploring the remote Llanganates National Park and its attractions including Cerro Hermoso. The city itself has a main central park across from the cathedral. Nearby waterfalls include Virgen de Agua Santa, Inés María, Agoyán, El Manto de la Novia, Pailón del Diablo and Machay.
Baños is a popular tourist destination in Ecuador due to its natural environment (it is home to more than 60 waterfalls) and its adventure sports. Locals and visitors alike undertake rafting, kayaking, canyoning, bridge jumping, hiking, biking and horseback riding. Under the Köppen climate classification, Baños has a subtropical highland climate.
La Casa Del Arbol Hailed as the Swing at the End of the World this awesome and cheap ($1pp) activity will have you sitting on a plank of wood as you sail out over the edge of a steep hill. Reachable by a 3 hour hike from Banos. There is a bigger swing called El Vuelo Del Condor. You will be strapped in a metal half-box and overlooking the city. You can go there from La Casa Del Arbol either by a bus or walk. It is very breathtaking and should be done in 5 mins. They charge you around $10 for the swing and another $5 if you want pictures.
Baños is not just well-known for it's adventures, but also for Healing and Health. A newly open Ayurvedic clinic - Bioethika Center for Healing is offering all kinds of natural Ayurvedic treatments including the special Ayurvedic massages, located at Luis A. Martinez and Thomas Haflants, just next to the Libreria Cafe. There are many studios in the centro or hostals, within 50m of each other on the same street. They all cost around $20/hour but are mostly local women without full training. The nicer spa locations around town cost $35/hour.

Al norte de Babahoyo se encuentra el cantón Urdaneta, de 27.000 habitantes, que recibe su nombre en honor al capitán venezolano y prócer de la independencia de Guayaquil Luis Urdaneta. Con un paisaje adornado principalmente por cerros y ríos, entre los que destaca el Zapotal, conocido también como Caracol, Urdaneta se dedica principalmente a la producción agrícola, al tiempo que cautiva al turista por su equilibrio natural.

Ambato, capital of the Tungurahua Province located in the Andean region of Ecuador. With roughly 500.000 'Ambateños', it is the fifth most important city in Ecuador. Ambato hosts the 'Festival of Fruits and Flowers'. This is a very big event and is considered the biggest in whole Ecuador. During the early years of the Republic of Ecuador the city served as an important cultural and economic center. About Ambato: Estadio Bellavista is a multi-use stadium in Ambato, Ecuador. It is used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Mushuc Runa, Macará, and Técnico Universitario. The stadium holds 16,467 spectators and is located on Bolivariana Avenue, a main thoroughfare through the city of Ambato. The stadium was built in 1945 and inaugurated in July of the same year. Atacames es una ciudad ecuatoriana, capital del cantón Atacames en la Provincia de Esmeraldas.
Es famosa en todo el Ecuador por poseer la playa natural más grande del Ecuador tiene una gran vida nocturna, especialmente los fines de semana y durante las vacaciones, no faltan su rica gastronomía, discotecas ni clubes de baile, hay muchos tenderetes a lo largo de su colorido paseo marítimo, unos con artesanía del país, muestras de joyería y otros para pasar el rato a orillas del mar.

Montañita takes its name from being located in an inlet surrounded by hills and vegetation at the foot of the sea, like a valley with an extensive beach, currently it is An international tourist resort visited by young people who practice adventure tourism and surfers.
La Chocolatera, this site is called La Chocolatera because of the water vapor, the water eddies and the presence of brown algae and even microalgae of the same color that people can mistake for oil, for all this people alluded to a metaphor like a cup of hot chocolate. Check out my experience.

Ecuadorian Culture
Ecuador’s distinct culture is as vibrant and beautiful as the hand woven tapestries of its local artisans. Stemming from its long and rich history, Ecuadorian culture includes a fair mix of indigenous practices along with European colonial influence. Almost everyone in Ecuador has a mixed-race background, which has resulted in tremendous cultural diversity as well as unique customs and traditions across the whole country.
Generally speaking, the overwhelming majority of Ecuadorians are Spanish-speaking Catholics, but as it becomes a more integrated and globalized nation each year, this is changing.
Culture Shaped by Geography
Straddling the equator, the Ecuadorian coast rushes up to snow-capped volcanoes then falls away to hot Amazon jungle--all in a country the size of the State of Colorado! It shares a long-contested border with Peru to the south and east, and is bounded by Colombia to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The country can be divided into four regions: the western coastal lowlands, the central Andean highlands, the eastern jungles of the Amazon basin and - some 1000 KM (620 miles) west of the mainland - the Galapagos Islands. Thanks to its agreeable climate and patchwork of habitats (alpine grasslands, coastal swamps, tropical rainforest), Ecuador is one of the most species-rich nations on earth, and ecologists have dubbed Ecuador a megadiversity hotspot.

The predominant religion is Roman Catholic, but there is a scattering of other Christian faiths. Indigenous Ecuadorians, however, have blended Catholicism and their traditional beliefs. An example is the near synonymous association of Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) and the Virgin Mary.
Holiday seasons like Christmas and Easter are particularly fascinating times to visit Ecuador. However, since Ecuador has freedom of religion, there are small populations of other Christian groups like Adventists, Mormons, and Evangelicals, and also an extremely small, but present Jewish population, along with a scattering of other religions.
Customs often include musical celebrations, long processions and walks, and many other engaging displays. Novenas are a common tradition in the Latin Catholic church, in which the community will host walks or services for the nine days before a holy day in pious preparation and prayer.
Christmas: During the Advent season, in preparation for Christmas, live nativities, and Christmas pageants are a common sight. On Christmas Eve, communities will often perform the Posadas, a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s search for an inn in Bethlehem. Another tradition is toasting with the eggnog liquor rompope and enjoying a ham or turkey dinner with family.
Language
Spanish is the main language throughout Ecuador, although most highland Indians are bilingual, with Quechua being their preferred language, while Spanish is only learned in school. When bargaining in rural markets, a Quechua word or two will not only endear you to the vendors, but usually get you an extra orange or more juice! Several small lowland groups speak their own languages. English is understood in the best hotels and in airline offices and travel agencies, but it's of little use elsewhere.
Art, Architecture, and Music
Despite its small size, Ecuador is a major cultural center for arts in South America. Most consider Quito to be the cultural capital as well as the political capital, and a visit to the well-appointed art museum shows why. Ecuador is the birthplace of famous painters like Oswaldo Guayasamin, Camilo Egas, and Manuel Rendon, as well as great writers like Juan Montalvo, Juan Leon Mera, and Juan Benigno Vela (all three from the highland city of Ambato).
Ecuador is also famous for its talented artisans. The city of Otavalo, north of Quito, has one of the largest indigenous markets in South America, where travelers can find beautifully woven clothes, tapestries, leatherwork, intricately carved wood, and gorgeous jewelry.
Leisure
Two of the most popular activities in Ecuador are soccer and dancing. The whole country rallies behind the “Tricolor” or “La Seleccion” (Ecuador’s national team), and there is a fierce rivalry between the major soccer clubs of Emelec, Barcelona, and La Liga de Quito. When people aren’t watching soccer, many enjoy playing soccer wherever they are able, whether on a grass field, a concrete court, or even just in the street with friends. Volleyball and tennis are other popular sports in Ecuador.
