The Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave) - Italy Walking Tour
The cave Grotta Gigante is a must see in the italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, situated near Borgo Grotta Gigante, in the municipality of Sgonico (Trieste).
The Grotta Gigante owes its name to the imposing size of the cave, the main underground chamber has a volume of 365,00 cubic meters and measures 98.5 meters in height, 167.60 in length, and 76.30 in width.
This unique cave is open to the public since 1908 and it can only be visited by guided tour, the visit lasts 1 hour and is carried out with expert guides who accompany visitors through the 850-meter long path, descending 100 meters below the Earth’s surface.
The temperature inside is of 11°C (51.8 °F) all year round.
