In The Mood for Gerês & Douro: The Summer Edition | Best Places to Travel in Portugal
Gerês and Douro, two jewels of Northern Portugal and summer destinations you cannot miss. Recently, I set foot in Gerés for the first time. It's been in my radar for a while, being a nature lover. And what a sumptuously green sanctuary it is. The Peneda-Gerês National Park is an absolute outdoor paradise, for lovers of nature retreats, hiking, exploring (or simply just unplugging and swimming in lakes). This is definitely one of my favourite places in Portugal, and a sparkling standout in the Minho province. That said, we tried some delicious Vinho Verde in the region, too.
What's more, I've revisited the Douro Valley, this time at the height of the summer. Douro is notorious for soaring temperatures during the summertime, but it's also an incredible experience witnessing this UNESCO World Heritage landscape working its full summer magic. Sérgio, from Portugal EV Tours, did wonders and toured us around the Douro (again!) in the most sustainable fashion, accompanied by the wine expert Salvador Sommelier.
And just when I thought this trip would end so soon, friends joined us in Porto and we're back on the Douro River again. This time, I realised what ties this journey altogether: kindness. Little acts of kindness, they can send ripples throughout time, and we reap them through the connections we make, the friendships we build, and the passions we pursue. Travel, explore, learn, connect, and then, be kind. ❤️

Ponte de Mouro - Monção - Portugal
A ponte, erguendo-se sobre o rio Mouro, é já por si um ponto de interesse, tanto a nível histórico, como arquitetónico. Originária do século XIV, foi remodelada em 1627, encontrando-se classificada como Imóvel de Interesse Público.
Encontra-se inserida num caminho antigo que vinha de Braga, passava por Arcos de Valdevez e se dirigia a Valadares, Melgaço, São Gregório e Serra da Peneda, já tendo testemunhado a passagem de almocreves e peregrinos.
Durante a crise de 1385 , O mestre de Avis futurio D.João I pede ajuda aos aliados Ingleses, e encontra-se aqui em Novembro de 1386 com João de Gant Duque de Lancaster. Ficou também acordado, nesse encontro, o casamento do rei português com Dona Filipa de Lencastre, filha do duque.

The Mountain Villages are located at the Natural Park of Serra da Estrela in the council of Seia, 1h20 away from Coimbra and 2 hours away from the Airport of Porto and 3 hours away from the Airport of Lisbon. This village network covers a geographical area of approximately 100 km, including: 14 walking routes and 4 mountain bike trails.
All of them seem too tiny in the infinity of a globalised world, but they are full of genuine people. The natural setting is absolutely beautiful. Serra da Estrela is truly overwhelming, perfect, unique, a place of silence.
The Mountain Villages are the starting point for engaging in walking trails, discovering almost enchanted woods: some of them inhabited by Portugal laurel, holly, layered valleys, vestiges of glaciers, depressions, water streams that make agricultural fields fertile, waterfalls and rocky formations of unusual shapes.

Linked to the wall rises the new quarter, where buildings such as social facilities, schools, the stadium and sports centre, the health care centre, the municipal market and the municipal swimming pools are located.
Concerning cuisine, Valença offers genuine delicacies such as Lampreia à Minhota (lamprey), Cabrito à Sanfins (kid), Bacalhau à São Teotónio (dried codfish) and Empanada (meat or fish pie).
The most interesting things to visit are mainly inside the fortress that looks down to the Minho River and Galicia. They have been destroyed several times whether it were the Barbarians, the Moors, the armies of Asturias and Leon or even the French troops in the 19th century, they have always been restored and still very well preserved.
Valença's fortress is a piece of gothic and baroque military architecture. The first walls were built in the 13th century. It was upgraded during the 17th and 18th century forming the present bulwarked system. It is placed on top of two small hills and it is formed by two polygons (the Recinto Magistral and the Coroada) separated by a ditch and with four doors (Coroada, Gaviarra, Fonte da Vila and Sol). The main entrance is Porta do Sol (Sun's door). This door was damaged during the Napoleonic invasions.

Valença is one of the interesting and attractive small Portuguese towns just at the border of Spain.
The most interesting things to visit are mainly inside the fortress that looks down to the Minho River and Spain.
Valença’s fortress is a piece of Gothic and baroque military architecture. The first walls were built in the 13th century.
It attracts a lot of visitors from Spain who come over to Portugal to shop for the wonderful Portuguese linen.
The city walls have been destroyed several times but they have always been restored and still very well preserved.
Along the north wall several old cannons very well maintained are positioned pointing to the river and Spain as if to remind everyone of their old purpose.
Sitting on the wall of the fortress, facing Spain is something special, looking over the town of Tui with the Cathedral of Tui as the highest point that is truly a beautiful view.
In 1879 Portugal and Spain agreed to construct a bi-functional (road and rail) bridge. The bridge was built inspired by Eiffel works. The bridge is still in use although a new bridge was built south of the older one
You can also get some nice traditional Portuguese food in the restaurants in the old town.
Palácio da Brejoeira - Monção - Portugal
El Pálacio da Brejoeira se encuentra a 6 kilómetros de Monçào, en el norte de Portugal, en la zona conocida como Pinheiros. Es un magnífico ejemplar de las casas hidalgas de la Regiao do Minho
Fue construido en el siglo XIX y clasificado como monumento nacional desde 1910. La inspiración para el diseño del edificio está tomada del Palacio Nacional de Ajuda.
Es elegante y suntuoso. Cuenta con un enorme viñedo propio, un bosque y un jardín, todos ellos extremadamente cuidados. Nos hallamos ante un monumento nacional, un edificio entre los más atractivos de Europa en su estilo neoclásico. En el interior encontraremos una capilla y un teatro, entre otras dependencias. La construcción original data de principios del siglo XIX y ha sufrido algunas reformas que hacen que brille aún más que recién edificada.
Su estilo es neoclásico con cuatro fachadas delimitadas por tres torreones, en su interior además de interesantes pinturas y frescos. cuenta con grutas y un lago en el recinto exterior.
Inicio su construcción Luís Pereira Velho de Moscoso y su segundo hijo, Simão, dio continuidad a las obras proyectadas por el arquitecto Carlos Amarante. Años mas tarde fue vendido a Pedro Maria da Fonseca Araújo, Presidente de la Associação Comercial do Porto, que completó las obras.
El Palacio da Brejoeira volvería a ser vendido, en 1937, a Francisco de Oliveira Pais, cuya hija, Maria Hermínia d’Oliveira Paes, construyó una bodega para la producción del famoso vino Alvarinho “Palácio da Brejoeira”.
El Palacio da Brejoeira fue el escenario que escogieron en 1950 los dictadores Franco y Salazar para conocerse.
