10 Things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia Travel Guide Video Transcript:

We're visiting Bratislava, Slovakia and in this video we're going to show you guys 10 things to do in Bratislava. Let's get started.

Our first stop was Devin Castle, which is located in Devin, a borough of Bratislava. This is the one attraction we visited that was a little further from the Old Town - a 30-minute bus ride.

Devin Castle is a ruined castle that sits on Slovak territory at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers.

We ate at a restaurant called “Modra Hviezda” which is located at the base of Bratislava Castle and feels like a cave.

Bratislava Castle was Built in the 9th century and modified over the centuries many times over, this 4-towered castle sits perched on a hill overlooking the Danube River.

You get nice views over the Old Town, plus you have the Slovak National Museum & the Baroque Gardens on the north side of the palace.

The following day, we set out to explore the Old Town and stopping cafe for a decadent breakfast.

Bratislava’s Old Town is compact & easy to explore on foot and cover most of the sights in one day. We went on our own do-it-yourself tour finding all sorts of interesting statues & landmarks.

The Blue Church is located on Bezručova Street, which is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Old Town designed in the art nouveau style.

Locals in Bratislava like to say that the best view of their city is from the UFO Bridge because you can’t see the UFO bridge. You get amazing views of Bratislava during sunset.

And while you’re down by the Danube, you can either enjoy a stroll along the river, or go on a sightseeing cruise.

Prašná bašta is another cozy restaurant located at basement level and we had another wonderful meal.

For sports fans be sure to check out a HC Slovan Bratislava ice hockey game. They play in the KHL and the level of hockey and entertainment value is fantastic.

And that’s a wrap for our trip to Bratislava. While we can see the appeal of doing this as a day trip from Vienna, we loved having the extra time to really enjoy the city, try out some great restaurants, and make it to some of the further attractions like Devin Castle. If you have a few days to spare, this is a great little capital to visit.

Any other things to do in Bratislava that we may have missed, feel free to share your suggestions with travellers in the comments below.

Slovak Food Taste Test - Eating in a Cave Restaurant in Bratislava, Slovakia

Come join us for a Slovak Food taste test as we visit a cave restaurant (Modrá Hviezda) in Bratislava Slovakia for lunch. We ended up ordering 5 different items from the menu including two drinks (wine and beer), two mains (both meat dishes) and a dessert to share. It ended up being a fantastic meal as the Slovak main dishes were hearty, rich and flavorful. We left feeling full and satisfied. The cave atmosphere was also very cool and cozy and we'd highly recommend this place. Keep in mind it is not a budget meal and ordering a couple of meat dishes, drinks and dessert will cost you over 40 Euros most likely.

1) Frankovka modrá red wine (dark skinned late ripening grapes rich in tannin with a spicy character)
2) Zlatý Bažant 'Golden Pheasant' Slovak Beer (12° svetlé pivo light coloured beer 4.7% ABV)
3) Pork chop in walnut crust with honey mustard sauce and roasted potatoes (bravčová kotleta)
4) Rabbit leg with forest mushrooms in a red wine sauce with herb potato herb dumplings (Králik na Šampiňónoch)
5) Homemade Slovak poppy seed dumplings (šúľance s makom)

Slovak Food Taste Test - Eating in a Cave Restaurant in Bratislava, Slovakia Travel Food Video Transcript:

We are in between castle visits. We just finished visiting Devin Castle. Yeah. Next up is Bratislava Castle but first we need lunch. What is the plan? Well, we've worked up a ridiculous appetite doing all of that walking so we are just going to try to find somewhere to eat nearby this new castle so we're just wandering around and we're going to hopefully find a place really soon. More Slovak Food. Let's go.

Do you remember what kind of wine you got? It is the specialty. It started with Frankovka modrá.

But that was enough exploring for me I think I've earned a beer. Haha. So I'm trying over here Zlatý Bažant 12°. Hopefully I'm saying that right. Bazant.

I have this giant pork chop covered in like crushed walnuts and it comes with a honey mustard sauce (bravčová kotleta) and I also have roasted potatoes.

Pork and honey mustard. Haha. That is amazing. Is it good? This was listed under the traditional dishes section. Yep. So really happy to be trying this.

So my traditional like Slovak main over here is basically it is rabbit leg (Králik na Šampiňónoch). Yep. And then on this part this side I don't know if you can see we've got wild mushrooms. Yeah. In a wine sauce. And then we have dumplings.

Potato dumplings and these are thick and heavy. They look like little pancakes. Yeah, they do. I'm going to grab a bit of that. And Sam chose this just because he read red wine sauce and was like yeah. Yeah. Give me the wine sauce.

Dessert has arrived and once again it looks completely different from what I was expecting. We ordered poppy seed dumplings so I thought maybe with pierogi filled with poppy seed but the dumplings it is like this wormy shape. I would say. And then you have poppy seed powder on top.

Time for price point. So time to wrap that up. That was not a cheap meal. It was 42 Euros but oh it was good. It was just like gourmet food and the most expensive thing we ordered was 14 which was one of the meat dishes.

The houses of Čičmany, Slovakia

All credit for this wobbly and erratic short clip go to my son :-)

The houses of Čičmany are often referred to as the gingerbread houses.
Čičmany is a beautiful little village; nestle in the stunning green valleys of North-West Slovakia.

A little history:
In the late 18th century the local residents of the small village of Čičmany started decorating their houses with lime as a way of preserving deteriorating wood.
Over time this developed into the elaborate patterns you see today.

In 1921 a fire raged through Čičmany almost completely destroying the town.
The villagers rebuilt the destroyed buildings and created new decorative designs.

After being rebuilt the village was then occupied by Nazi soldiers who set the village ablaze during World War II.

After the war, the Office for the Care of Historical Monuments in Bratislava oversaw the second massive reconstruction of the village.

The In 1979 the village was protected by the government as a cultural reservation.

The history of Čičmany has been documented as far back as 1272.

Enjoy excellent Slovak dishes with good beer or home-made wine in our restaurant located in the building from the 18th century. Last weekend I visited the Slovak capital of Bratislava. I’ve been wanting to visit the city for quite a while, and finally it was time. The easiest way to get there, at least from Stockholm, is to fly to Vienna in Austria, situated about 70 kilometers from Bratislava. Bratislava actually have its own airport, but there aren’t that many flights, and no direct ones from Stockholm. So instead we flew Austrian Airlines, which was a nice airline with free drinks and friendly staff. When I went to Bratislava, Slovakia, I had no idea what to expect from the food scene. Before going, I imagined hearty stews and lots of cabbage and potatoes- and I wasn't wrong- but there is so much more to the Bratislava food scene! From traditional Slovak food to trendy cafes, Bratislava has an up-and-coming food scene with lots of old world character.

Mesto Modra

Pozývame vás do Modry, hlavného mesta vína a keramiky.

Ručne robené skvosty lákajú do Modry milovníkov keramiky z celého sveta. Modranská majolika a majoliková ornamentika sú zapísané v Reprezentatívnom zozname nehmotného kultúrneho dedičstva Slovenska.

Vinohradnícka tradícia
Modra je sídlom Malokarpatskej vínnej cesty a Strednej odbornej školy vinársko-ovocinárskej – najstaršej a jedinej svojho druhu na Slovensku. Ak patríte k milovníkom dobrého vína a lokálnej gastronómie, tomuto vinohradníckemu mestečku odoláte len ťažko. Každé rodinné vinárstvo má svoj príbeh a stelesňuje ho tvár vinára, ktorý do remesla zapojil celú rodinu.

Tradičné i moderné umenie
V severnej bašte je Galéria Ignáca Bizmayera, majstra figurálnej keramickej tvorby. Nájdete tu majstrovské diela, výtvarné stvárnenie bohatých slovenských krojov, remeselníkov, muzikantov a početných ľudových tradícií a zvykov. Zastavte sa aj v Zoya museum na výstave súčasných slovenských aj európskych výtvarných umelcov. Nachádza sa v priestoroch moderného vinárskeho komplexu Elesko wine park.

Lesopark a klimatické kúpele

Experience the wine year in the Malé Karpaty region - the top wine tourist destination in Slovakia

Wine filtration. In the second half of April and at the beginning of May, wine-grower is setting up a new vineyard or, as necessary, adds missing plants to an existing one. In order to have the row full. There is work to be done in the cellar, too, where white and rose wines are being filtered. The filter has a single task – release clear wine and capture solid dirt or some yeasts that might later cause mess in the bottle. Filtration is made as necessary; twice or three times in order to arrive at crystal clear and, simultaneously, stable wine. By its delicate filtration, wine retains its purity and aromas. Only then it can be bottled. A very effective white wine diatomaceous filtration we went to see in Purus Modra Winery last year is usually made as a “rough” filtration of young wines. The bottling is preceded by “sharp” filtration that can also capture microorganisms.

Modra ceramics in Slovakia Part 2: How to avoid buying a fake.

How to find out whether the piece of Modra ceramics you're about to buy is authentic or fake.

This video is narrated in Slovak. Here's English translation:

[text: title at the beginning] What one should be careful about when buying Modra ceramics: TRADEMARK.

[my narration] Here's one warning.
If you happen to be buying this ceramics in Slovakia, be careful that there is this mark down at the bottom.
At the bottom of the cup or any piece that you're going to buy, there should be this mark Slovak Folk Majolica Modra.

[text] This is how they explained it to us right at their workshop in Modra.

[narration - lady at the workshop speaking ] On each product that the craftsman makes and a painter paints, they put on their mark - it's the craftsman's (unique) mark. And then they put on our trademark - with this trademark you know that it's authentic Modra ceramics, because there are many private individuals around this area who imitate our products and sell as Modra ceramics. But they cannot use our trademark.

[my narration at the end] So be careful that they (the Modra pottery pieces) have this mark.

Bratislava, Slovakia | Nature, sights, overview | Drone 4k video | Bratislava city what to visit

Bratislava, Slovakia. This video review tells about the capital of the state of Slovakia - the city of Bratislava. The video was filmed using a drone in 4k resolution so that viewers can see the endless and diverse landscapes from a bird's eye view.

general information
Bratislava is the largest city in Slovakia, which is also its capital. It is located in the western part of the country, and in the west and south it borders on Austria and Hungary. The Danube River flows through the whole of Bratislava, which divides it into two parts.

Nature
On the territory adjacent to Bratislava Castle, shady green parks that once belonged to the royal family are still preserved. In general, in Bratislava, as in other European capitals, the authorities are very sensitive to green areas. Especially different is the Mountain Park, which looks more like a dense forest. Residents of the city love to come here to hide from the bustle of the city and enjoy the picturesque scenery.

What to see
Due to the fact that the history of the city began more than a millennium ago, and Bratislava itself was the capital of a large state of Hungary for three hundred years, a huge number of historical buildings and other monuments of art were concentrated in its historical center. You can walk around it in about 2 hours. The sleeping areas of Bratislava are of no interest to tourists, since industrial enterprises and Stalinist block-type architecture are concentrated on their territory. All historical buildings here were destroyed during World War II.
The National Gallery of Slovakia, located on the square of the palace built in the 18th century, contains artifacts from the period spanning the 4th century, works of art from the Baroque and Gothic styles. The most popular exhibits here are the unique busts of the 18th century, the author of which was the famous sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt.
The bridge of the Slovak National Uprising crosses the Danube River. It is known as the world's longest cable-suspension bridge with one support and a single cable system. On top of the support rises a building, nicknamed UFO. It houses a restaurant.

Attractions
There is an unusual Art Nouveau church on Bezruchova Street. The date of construction of the blue church named after St. Elizabeth refers to the 10th years of the last century. The building does not look like a religious building at all. This church looks like a fabulous house, combining various styles in its facade. The exterior is paved with soft blue tiles with white stucco.
Bratislava Castle also attracts tourists - a large castle-fortress that once protected the city from enemies. In the 16th century, the building served as a residence for the royal family of the Hungarian state, and for 2 centuries it even kept the royal attributes of power.
On the main square of the city there is an architectural complex consisting of the Old Town Hall and neighboring buildings. Once they belonged to the mayor of Bratislava. Now this place attracts tourists with its interiors. One of the buildings of the ensemble houses a branch of the City Museum.
Another building that attracts tourists in the historical center of the city is the Mikhailovsky Gate. Only a part of them has survived to our times, but once they were a complex of buildings to protect the city from the enemy advancing from the east. Their construction dates back to the 14th century, but they received their current baroque appearance during the reconstruction carried out in 1759.
Despite the fact that there are several palaces in Bratislava, it is the Primate Palace that attracts visitors, as it is open to the public. Its construction took place in the 1770s, it was then that it acquired its neoclassical features. For some reason, special attention is paid to the Hall of Mirrors, which impresses with its interiors.

Useful information for tourists
Miroslav Stefanik Airport is located in Bratislava. Also from Russia, for example, you can get to the capital of Slovakia by rail. The Moscow-Budapest train travels along a route that includes the main European capitals.
Tourists often bring Modran ceramics from Bratislava. It got its name thanks to the village of Modra, which is located near the capital of the country. However, products made from it can be found in any market throughout the country.
Public transport runs around Bratislava in day and night shifts. Accordingly, there will be no problems with moving around the city.

Trying Slovak Food | What I Ate in Bratislava, Slovakia

For me, one of the best parts of travelling to new places is trying new foods. Not only does it tell you a lot about a place, but it can be unforgettably delicious. The food I tried in Bratislava, Slovakia did not disappoint.

OTHER VIDEOS IN BRATISLAVA:
Is Bratislava, Slovakia Worth Visiting?:
How Much Is It To Stay In Bratislava?:
Visiting the Bratislava Christmas Market:

We saw a cheese vending machine – that was a first! It’s at the bus station so people can grab something for the road. It looks like a little log cabin and pictures a man tending his animals. Very pastoral! Inside there are different kinds of traditional Slovak cheese like smoked cheese and garlic and paprika cheese. There are also other dairy products like yogurt. I love vending machines and all the things you can find in them around the world.

We really wanted to try traditional Slovak food so we went to Kláštorný Pivovar (Monastic Brewery), a brewery where you can see the beer being made. I got to try Kofola and there’s a lot of history wrapped up in this sweet, carbonated beverage. Back when Slovakia and the Czech Republic were Czechoslovakia, Kofola became extremely popular because similar drinks like Coke and Pepsi were not generally available. Kofola is still super popular today (I’d say still more than those competitors) and you can find it everywhere. The main reason we went to the brewery was because we were tipped off that they bake their own bread bowls in which to serve Slovak garlic cream soup. They keep the top of the bread on like a little top so the soup stays nice and hot. It was topped with gooey cheese and tasted so comforting after walking around in the cold all day. We also ordered Slovak National dumplings which are little potato dumplings with sheep cheese and bacon. Marc and I shared a platter of sausage served with mustard and horseradish sauce and it was bursting with mildly spicy flavour that also warmed us up.

You know when it’s really cold out and you walk by a place and it looks so warm and welcoming that it draws you in? That’s what happened at a place called Škodovka. The name of this café comes from the Czech car manufacturer Skoda and you can see a bright yellow Skoda car inside. The rest of the interior feels like walking into someone’s living room in the 1960s. Marc had a tea with honey and lemon which came with a cute lemon squeezer. I wanted hot chocolate but couldn’t decide between white and dark so the waiter made me one with both – so nice! We also tried Slovak snack food which was bread rolls stuffed with what tasted like tuna salad.

On our way out of Bratislava, we stopped at a cute restaurant called Café Verne. It’s named after Jules Verne who spent time in the area. The décor was vintage and cozy. We shared a bottle of Kofola (beverages taste better in glass bottles, right!?) and I ordered goulash with dumplings while Marc had vegetable risotto. We were obviously craving comfort foods.

I’d love to know: what are your favourite Slovak foods?
