Kosovo's Flashpoint - A Story of Rebuilding in the Divided City of Mitrovica (Cultural Travel Guide)

The fortunes of Mitrovica in Northern Kosovo are inextricably linked to the enormous Trepca mine and to the Kosovo war. The city is in a process of rebuilding and reconciliation after finding itself divided following the conflict, with the majority of the city being ethnic Albanian but North Mitrovica retaining a large Serbian population and a different political administration. As well as a short tour of the city, this film takes you to the famous mine as well as the city museum, where curator Nora Prekazi presents a collection examining the post-war rebuilding and reflecting on the work still to be done. This was a short day trip but I hope it presents an insight into the past, present and future of this fascinating city.
The tour with Bekim was arranged through ToursByLocals.

There is archaeological evidence that proves the region of Mitrovica has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. Two settlements were discovered in 1955 in the industrial park near the FAFOS factory (phosphates productions), from which the archaeological site got the name. In Fafos, settlements revealed different objects of everyday use, but the most characteristic were cult objects (small anthropomorphic figures) of the Vinča culture.

Kosovo, officially the Republic of Kosovo, is a partially recognized state in Southeast Europe. It lies at the centre of the Balkans, occupying an area of 10,887 km2 (4,203 sq mi), with a population of about 1.8 million; and is bordered by the uncontested part of the territory of Serbia to the north and east, North Macedonia to the southeast, Albania to the southwest, and Montenegro to the west. Kosovo unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008, and has since gained diplomatic recognition as a sovereign state by 97 member states of the United Nations. Most of central Kosovo is dominated by the vast plains and fields of Metohija and Kosovo. The Accursed Mountains and Šar Mountains rise in the southwest and southeast, respectively. Its capital and largest city is Pristina. ...
The natural values of Kosovo represent quality tourism resources. The description of Kosovo's potential in tourism is closely related to its geographical location, in the center of the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe. It represents a crossroads which historically dates back to antiquity. Kosovo serves as a link in the connection between Central and Southern Europe and the Adriatic Sea and Black Sea. The mountainous west and southeast of Kosovo has great potential for winter tourism. Skiing takes place at the winter resort of Brezovica within the Šar Mountains. Kosovo is generally rich in various topographical features, including high mountains, lakes, canyons, steep rock formations and rivers. Other major attractions include the capital, Pristina, the historical cities of Prizren, Peja and Gjakova but also Ferizaj and Gjilan [

Back in October of 2020, I spent a little over a week on a once-in-a-lifetime road trip through Kosovo with my good friend Erjan Guxha. I spent two of those days in the national capital, Pristina. This city lies on a plain near the Goljak Mountains, and has a rich history that has roots dating back to the ancient Vinča culture.

The city, like most of Kosovo, has moved on from the dark days of the Kosovo War in the 1990s, and rebuilt itself stronger than ever. That said, Pristina still is often overlooked by travelers visiting the Balkans in favor of other cities in the region like Belgrade, Dubrovnik, Split, Skopje, and Sofia. But Pristina is more than worthy of a visit, and I’ll show you why in this video.

Whether you’re visiting the gorgeous Mirusha Waterfalls and Gadime Caves just outside of town, dining on delicious local fare at Molla Egër Agroturizëm, or checking out the unique architecture of the National Library of Kosovo, there’s something for everyone in this city.

Erjan and I explored sites within the city, like Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa and the Magic Ice Cheese Factory. We also ventured outside the city limits to the ancient city of Ulpiana, Bear Sanctuary Pristina, and Gračanica Monastery.

And, of course, we couldn’t visit Pristina without trying some delicious qebapa and qofte! But instead of me telling you about what a fantastic travel destination Pristina is, let me show you…

Walk&Talk '22 #21 Kosovska Mitrovica, Kosovo, a walk through both parts of the city :) ...

We continue our visit to Kosovska Mitrovica with a walk through both parts of the city. We begin with the part located south of the Ibar River populated primarily by Kosovo Albanians and then we cross the Ibar New Bridge into the part located north of the Ibar River populated primarily by Kosovo Serbs. Along the way we observe how both parts of the city differ from each other. Apart from Serbian flags hoisted massively in the north, the other visible difference is how the cars there have Serbian license plates with Serbian identifications covered by white stickers, both being clear signs of identity issues for Kosovo Serbs. We also observe how main pedestrian promenades on both sides of the river differ, how many open cafes and people are there, as well as, how general cleanness is kept. Virtual walk, with Polish commentary and a good dose of humor :) ...

Day 9, part 3/4, 2022-09-17, Kosovska Mitrovica, RKS

Wirtualny spacer, z polskim komentarzem i sporą dawką humoru :)...

PRIZREN! KOSOVO'S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY (Cultural Travel Guide to Prizren) #prizren #kosovo

Famous as the birthplace of the League of Prizren in the late 19th century, 21st century Prizren is arguably Kosovo's tourist capital. Thankfully, the Kosovo conflict left the historic core of Prizren largely intact and both visitors and locals can enjoy lazy walks by the river, crossing and re-crossing the ancient bridges and relaxing in the myriad of cafes. A late afternoon walk up to the Prizren Fortress allows for captivating views across the city to the mountains that border Albania and Macedonia.

In this film I provide a brief outline of the history of this historic trading city and, of course, the founding of the League of Prizren and its lasting legacy.

I stayed at the Hotel Prior which I would highly recommend for its location, friendly staff and delicious breakfasts!

This film features interviews with a number of community leaders working to transform Peja and the surrounding region into a premium cultural centre and tourist destination. Visit the famous Bazaar, the Peć Patriarchate, the Museum and the Art School, alongside a walk around time and an obligatory cafe stop. There is plenty of accommodation in Peja for all budgets.
