Mirano, Italy is known as the Park of Venice...it was a popular place for wealthy families to escape here back in the Republic days of Venice which is why this town has so many Palazzos (Palaces) scattered around. Today we would refer to them more as mansions...but just think, every summer when the heat is too extreme on the Island, you just escape to a summer palace surround by beautiful streams and gardens! MURANO GLASS MAKING ISLAND near Venice, Italy - Take a day trip to Murano and experience the world famous Murano Glass Factories!
Jaycation visits Murano Island which is 3.5 kilometers from Venice to experience the glass factories and beautiful brick buildings and canals within the island. Find out the history of glass making in Murano and visit places like Chiesa Di San Pietro Martire and the Torre Del'Orologio. We also find some delicious Gelato at Crema & Cioccolato and have some Cicchetti at Ristorante da Tanduo. We also go in search for the perfect Murano Glass Souvenirs.

Travel Tip: Head to Burano early in the morning and hit Murano on the way back to Venice. Murano is bigger than Burano and has less tourists around than Burano does during the middle of the day.

We've saved our favorite Venice day trip island for last - Murano! We didn't just day trip there - we stayed there. Our tour guide in central Venice highly recommended touring Massimiliano Schiavon Art Team's factory on Murano. The art of blowing glass in their workshops is incredible. We thought it would be really touristy, but it wasn't at all (at least not the one we went to!). These glass artists are true craft workers!
We also visit the main cathedral on Murano - the one with the long name (Basilica of Saint Mary and Saint Donatus). We have it all to ourselves! The mosaic tile floors here are amazing!
We also discuss whether YOU should stay in Murano or central Venice, and try to put into words why we love Venice the way we do.

Venice Glass Factory Mirano Italy
The Island of Mirano has been the main centre of Venetian glass making since the 13th century but has been has been made in the Venice area for over 1,500 years.
Today Murano is known for its art glass, but it has a long history of innovations in glassmaking in addition to its artistic fame—and was Europe's first major glassmaking centre.
Located off the shore of Venice, Italy, Murano was a commercial port and a well-known city of trade since the 10th century.
Today Murano is a must visit destination for tourists and art and jewellery lovers alike.
In 1291, the mayor of Venice, Italy ordered that all glass factories move to the island of Murano to prevent harmful factory fires from affecting Venice.
Since then, Murano glass has developed a reputation for beauty and color. Murano glass is first identified by its location, then its factories, and finally its designers.
You can identify these sources with a certificate of authenticity, a master glass maker signature or a Murano glass catalog.
Most Murano glass art is made using the lampworking technique. The glass is made from silica which becomes liquid at high temperatures. As the glass passes from a liquid to a solid state, there is an interval when the glass is soft before it hardens completely. This is when the glass-master can shape the material.
