Michelstadt in the Odenwald is a town in the Odenwaldkreis (district) in southern Hesse, Germany between Darmstadt and Heidelberg.
Michelstadt had its first documentary mention in 741 from Mayor of the Palace Carloman, Charlemagne’s uncle.
Michelstadt is one of the oldest settlements in the inner Odenwald.
Its castle grew out of a Frankish baronial estate.
This was built into a refuge for the local inhabitants.
As a royal estate, Prince Carloman donated it in 741 to Saint Boniface’s pupil Burchard, the first Bishop of Würzburg.
This donation was apparently meant for Bishop Burchard personally, for the Michelnstat area passed back to the Frankish Crown upon Burchard’s death in 791.

In 815, the Michlinstat area was donated once again.
Einhard also built the Einhardsbasilika.
In 819, he bequeathed his Odenwald holdings to Lorsch Abbey and in so doing precisely defined the boundaries of the Mark Michelstadt.
Upon Einhard’s death on 14 March 840, the monastery came into its inheritance.
In the 17th century, the first houses outside the town wall were built.
In 1773, a new town gate was built, called the Neutor (“New Gate”).
Out of what was once a small farming community grew a sizeable town with important industrial operations on the foundation of the centuries-old ironworking.
A new economic era began.
From the clothweavers’ and dyers’ guild grew a cloth factory; from foundries grew machine factories.
Ivory carving was a starting point for businesses in the souvenir industry and plastics processing.
Michelstadt's Old Town features many timber-frame houses.
Particularly worthy of mention are the following buildings, some within the old town, others in the surrounding countryside: The historic Town Hall, the Diebsturm (Thief's Tower) at the town wall, the Kellereihof (a Frankish, early mediaeval castle complex refurbished in an early Renaissance style) in the town wall ring, the late Gothic town church (late 13th century), the Einhards-Basilika, the palace of the Counts at Erbach-Fürstenau (Schloss Fürstenau, within which are parts of an old moated castle in Michelstadt-Steinbach), Jagdschloss Eulbach with an English landscape garden and a Roman bath and castra, formerly part of the Neckar-Odenwald Limes.

Wir beginnen unseren Rundgang durch die größte Stadt des Odenwaldkreises (Hessen) am historischen Marktplatz. Dort bewundern wir das Rathaus von 1484, den Marktbrunnen und die Fachwerkhäuser. Anschliessend können wir in der bereis im Jahre 741 erstmals urkundlich erwähnten Stadt u.a.
die Stadtkirche Michelstadt von 1490, die Synagoge, das Elefantenhaus, die Burg Michelstadt und den Gasthof Grüner Baum besichtigen.

We begin our tour through the biggest town of the district Odenwald (Hessen) at the historic market place. Here we can admire the town hall from 1484, the market fountain and the half-timbered houses. Michelstadt was first mentioned in records from 741. After the market square we can visit for example the town church Michelstadt from 1490, the synagogue, the elephant house, the castle Michelstadt and the guesthouse ‘Green Tree’ (‘Grüner Baum’).

It is probably one of the most popular in Hesse: the Christmas market in Michelstadt (Odenwald). The market around the historic town hall offers its visitors numerous highlights in addition to more than a hundred stalls: for example, the large wooden Christmas figures set up everywhere and an artistically carved twelve-meter-high Christmas pyramid.
There are also concerts by trombone players and alphorn players - and of course, St. Nicholas is there too.

Walk Through Michelstadt Christmas Market, 2021
Michelstadt is one of the most charming towns in Hessen and they go all out for their Christmas Market. Winding, cobblestone lanes, and chock full of Half-Timbered buildings, Michelstadt had its first official mention in 741.
The market is 3G, which they check as you enter and then put a wrist band on you. This is similar to Limburg and Mainz markets. 3G = Vaccinated, Recovered, or Tested.
The last day for the market this year is on Sun. 19 Dec. and it is closed on Mon. and Tues. Get there early though because as I was leaving at 16:45 last night there was a HUGE line of people waiting to get in.
If you can't make it there this year, put this Christmas market on your list for next year!
The town is easy to get to from Frankfurt, with train schedules and prices on the RMV website. A direct train takes about 1.5 hours as Michelstadt is located down in the Odenwald.
Leave a comment if you want to guess the date of the Rathaus carved into the heavy, wood beam.
Easter Market in Michelstadt, 18-19.2023
This is a pretty popular market, so suggest you go early. By the time we left at 14:30, the line was quite long just to get in. The market itself is indoors, though there were vendors on the streets selling some food, ceramics, and other small items. They will have Sunday shopping on the 19th. Saw a small carousel farther down the street and the town was decorated too, especially the old town hall.
Huge parking lot next to the building where the Easter market was held this year. Trains are easy too, I took a direct train from Frankfurt that took about an hour and 10 min. Though Michelstadt is located in the Odenwald, it is still in Hessen, so you can use a Hessen ticket for this or a group day ticket from
This is a beautiful, small town and a place to spend a weekend or just a day trip. Lots of great restaurants and the hotels looked charming.

Michelstadt is one of Germany's loveliest settings to have a Christmas Market. Its medieval Old Town has many timber-framed houses and it looks like it's straight out of a story book. Michelstadt is one of the oldest settlements in the inner Odenwald, in southern Hesse. It is about 60 km from Mannheim and Heidelberg.

Erbach im Odenwald (Erbach): is a town and the district seat of the Odenwaldkreis in Hesse, Germany.
The particularly beautiful ambiance of the Castle Christmas attracts many visitors to Erbach every year. This year there will be around 60 stands and one of the largest Christmas trees in Germany. Children can choose between grandma reading aloud or a theater program, and a light angel on stilts hands out sweet gold thalers. But there is also a lot on offer for adults with Christmas concerts and city tours.
