Jietai Temple - the largest Buddhist ordination terrace existent in China.

Located in Mentougou District 22 miles (35 kilometers) west of the urban area, Jietai Temple is one of the oldest royal Buddhist temples in Beijing. It was constructed in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), covering an area of 11 acres (4 hectares). Jietai Temple is famous for the largest Buddhist ordination terrace existent in China, thus also called the Ordination Terrace Temple.

The ordination terrace or ordination altar, Jietai in Chinese, is the place to initiate someone into monkhood or nunhood in Buddhism. Located in the middle of the Grand Hall of Ordination Terrace, the altar is a 3.5-meter-high (11.5-feet-high) square tower made of bluestone. On the four sides of the terrace, there are 113 statues of Buddha, which were all remade in the 1980s by the famous Chinese clay figurine master Zhang Ming and his apprentice.

The ordination terrace was first built in the Liao Dynasty (916-1125) by Fajun, who was an eminent monk of the Lu Sect, a branch of Buddhism. It was called the No. 1 Ordination Terrace in China at that time. In order to commend Fajun's work, the Emperor granted him the Yuzhi Jieben, a sutra that was copied by the Emperor himself. Since the one who held the Yuzhi Jieben would be recognized as the leader of the Lu Sect in China, this book has become the most important treasure of Jietai temple. It has become the sacred land of the Lu Sect and the highest Buddhist institution in northern China.

How to get to Jietai Temple
Take Subway Line 1 to Pingguoyuan Station. Then transfer to bus 948 and get off at Jietaisi (Jietai Temple) Station. Bus 948 departs from Pingguoyuan Station regularly at 07:00, 10:00, 13:00, and 16:10.

Introduction:

The Tanzhe Temple (Chinese: 潭柘寺; pinyin: Tán Zhè Sì; lit. 'Temple of Pool and Zhe Tree') is a Buddhist temple situated in the Western Hills, a mountainous area in western Beijing. At one time, it was one of the most important temples in the nation. The temple is located near China National Highway 108 in the Mentougou District of Beijing. Built-in the Jin Dynasty (265–420), it has an age of around 1,700 years. Tanzhe Temple is one of the oldest temples in Beijing. The area of the entire temple is 100 mu (6.8 hectares), and its arrangement of halls is akin to that found in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Zhangjiajie National Park Monorail China

There is a cute little monorail train in the Zhangjiajie National Park where the Hallelujah Avatar Mountains are. These mountains in central China are absolutely amazing to see and experience! The monorail takes visitors up a hill along side a walking path and at the top there are a couple trailheads, cafes, and souvenir shops. This monorail was definitely not made for speed or smoothness but it draws many riders who want to avoid the walk but still get the amazing views!

Does Beijing have Mountain Scenery? White River Hike Day Trip

I love being outdoor and being active. While living in Beijing it isn't always easy to go outdoors and enjoy nature. Luckily there are some companies who organize hikes to nature parks in the surroundings of Beijing.

Together with the Beijing Hikers I went on the 'White River Hike'. About 2 hours from Beijing, in the Miyun district, you can find a canyon with a river. I hiked along and through the river, surrounded by lush trees and mountains.

I would really love your support! Please subscribe to my channel if you got value from this video:

Beijing Architecture — Marco Polo Bridge and Wanping Castle

Most people know the historic Lugouqiao by another name: the Marco Polo Bridge. The original span over this branch of the Yongding River was constructed in the 12th century and was described by the famous Venetian traveler during his visit to the city in the 13th century. For contemporary travelers, nearby Wanping Castle is also worth a visit, with a new retail and culture street offering snacks and shopping to enhance your own explorations.

【4K】| BAQIDONG | Biggest Karst Cave of NorthChina | Day Walk in Beijing |

2022-10-12 | 13:30 | Cloudy | 3.5km

Baqidong (Ba means 8 in Chinese) is located in Beijing's Mentougou District, about 500 meters from the famed Tanzhe Temple. It is renowned as a heavenly creation, a wonderful cave because of its distinctive folded 8 look and eight miracles. According to legend, first there was Tanzhe Temple, then there was Youzhou City.
Numerous monks were preaching in this region of Tanzhe Temple when Buddhism was first introduced to Yancheng during the Jin Dynasty, therefore there are many god-like sculptures of Buddha in the cave, and pictures that demonstrate monks practicing.

北京地图 map of Beijing China

The city of Beijing has a long history dating back over 3,000 years. Prior to the unification of China by the First Emperor in 221 BC, Beijing had been for centuries the capital of the ancient states of Ji and Yan. It was a provincial center in the earliest unified empires of China, Qin and Han. The northern border of ancient China ran close to the present city of Beijing, and northern nomadic tribes frequently broke in from across the border. Thus, the area that was to become Beijing emerged as an important strategic and a local political centre.[13] During the first millennia of imperial rule, Beijing was a provincial city in northern China. Its stature grew in the 10th to the 13th centuries when the nomadic Khitan and forest-dwelling Jurchen peoples from beyond the Great Wall expanded southward and made the city a capital of their dynasties, the Liao and Jin. When Kublai Khan made Dadu the capital of the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty (1279–1368), all of China was ruled from Beijing for the first time. From 1279 onward, with the exception of two interludes from 1368 to 1420 and 1928 to 1949, Beijing would remain as China's capital, serving as the seat of power for the Ming dynasty (1421–1644), the Manchu-led Qing dynasty (1644–1912), the early Republic of China (1912–1928) and now the People's Republic of China (1949–present). The earliest remains of hominid habitation in Beijing Municipality were found in the caves of Dragon Bone Hill near the village of Zhoukoudian in Fangshan District, where the Homo erectus Peking Man (previously classified as the now-invalid species Sinanthropus pekinensis) lived from 770,000 to 230,000 years ago.[14] Paleolithic homo sapiens also lived in the caves from about 27,000 to 10,000 years ago..

It was a provincial center in the earliest unified empires of China, Qin and Han. The northern border of ancient China ran close to the present city of Beijing, and northern nomadic tribes frequently broke in from across the border. In 1996, over 2,000 Stone Age tools and bone fragments were discovered at a construction site at Wangfujing in the heart of downtown Beijing in Dongcheng District.[16] The artifacts date to 24,000 to 25,000 years ago and are preserved in the Wangfujing Paleolithic Museum in the lower level of the New Oriental Plaza mall.

Archaeologists have discovered over 40 neolithic settlements and burial sites throughout the municipality. The most notable include Zhuannian of Huairou District; Donghulin of Mentougou District; Shangzhai and Beiniantou of Pinggu District; Zhenjiangying of Fangshan; and Xueshan of Changping District.[17][18] These sites indicate that farming was widespread in the area 6,000 to 7,000 years ago. Painted pottery and carved jade of the Shangzhai and Xueshan Cultures resemble those of the Hongshan Culture further to the north.[19]

The earliest events of Beijing's history are shrouded in legend and myth. The epic Battle of Banquan, which according to Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian, occurred in the 26th century BC, may have taken place near the Upper and Lower Banquan Villages of Yanqing County on the northwestern edge of Beijing Municipality.[20][Note 17] The triumph of the Yellow Emperor over the Yan Emperor at Banquan united the two Emperors' tribes and gave rise to the Huaxia or Chinese nation, which then defeated Chiyou and the Nine Li tribes in the Battle of Zhuolu, possibly at Zhuolu, 75 km (47 mi) west of Yanqing in Hebei Province.[20][21] This victory opened North China to settlement by the descendants of the Yan and Yellow Emperors. map of beijing , #beijing
