Pentidattilo (Πενταδάττυλο, Pentadàttilo in Greco di Calabria)[1] è una frazione del Comune di Melito Porto Salvo, in Provincia di Reggio Calabria. Fino al 1811 fu comune autonomo. A partire dai primi anni del XXI secolo, e senza fondati motivi, sempre più spesso viene comunemente chiamato Pentedattilo, malgrado già nei documenti di età moderna sia molto più frequentemente indicato come Pentidattilo (le tre vocali a, e, ed i nelle fonti storiche si alternano spesso a causa della pronuncia dialettale reggina); anche nei documenti contemporanei, così come nella segnaletica stradale, la grafia in realtà è sempre stata Pentidattilo. La variante Pente- sembra ricalcare la grafia della parola cinque in greco moderno.

Visiting the Greek-Speaking Parts of Italy
Join me as I visit 2 different parts of southern Italy, where 2 different dialects of Greek are spoken.
One is Griko, found in the Salento peninsula.
The other is Greko, found in the southern part of Calabria, which is why it is sometimes known as Calabrian Greek.
I did have some difficulties along the way. But it was still worth the effort to try and find out more about these rare languages, and see how much I can understand, given how they're related to one of my native languages.

✅ Hello my friends! Let's walk together by a ghost town in southern Italy: Pentedattilo!
Pentedattilo is a small village in Calabria, southern Italy.
The town takes its name from the shape of the cliff of Mount Calvary: a giant hand with five fingers (from the Greek pente (πέντε), or five and dactilo (δάκτυλο), i.e. finger). Right under this mountain the Castle was first built, and then all around the ancient village, surrounded by an extraordinary natural landscape.
Nowadays it is a popular destination for hikers and tourists from all over the world.
The Valle di Sant'Elia is part of this evocative setting, where the curious sandstone fortresses of Santa Lena and Prasterà are located, immersed in expanses of gorse, olive trees, mulberry trees and prickly pears, almond trees and mimosas: a great show in spring.
Pentedattilo is an ex-Greek speaking village in the Calabrian region. Ιt lost its Greek language during the late 19th century.
Pentedattilo was founded as a colony of the Greek city of Chalcis, in 640 BC. A flourishing commercial town during the Greater Greece and Roman eras, it declined during the Byzantine domination, when it was sacked by the Saracens and by others.

In recent years, Pentedattilo has ceased to be a ghost town, restored by associations, artisans and private parties. Currently only two people live (permanently), while in summer it is filled with tourists, artists and lovers of the natural beauty of the town.

Calabria Walking Tour
On this tour we explored Pentidattilo, a small village (with about 40 inhabitants) of southern Italy located in the province of Reggio Calabria.
Pentidattilo rises on the cliff of Mount Calvario at about 250 meters above sea level. The village was founded in 640 B.C. by the Calcidesi, colonists coming from Calcide, a Polis of ancient Greece. The name of the village derives from the characteristic shape of the rock on which it rises that recalls the five fingers of a hand, in Greek πέντα-δάκτυλος (transliterated penta-dactylus) that is five fingers.
Pentidattilo was seriously damaged by the strong earthquake of 1783 that hit southern Calabria and the area of the Strait of Messina. Following the earthquake began a constant flow of migration that led to the abandon of the village (around the middle of 1960). In the early '80s thanks to some cultural and voluntary associations the recovery of Pentidattilo began. Today the small stone houses, surrounded by prickly pears, are lodgings of widespread hospitality and along with the workshops of wood, glass and ceramics that some artists and craftsmen have moved to Pentidattilo contribute to the sustainable rebirth of this wonderful village.
