The 10 best things to do in Augsburg, Germany

The top tourist attractions in Augsburg - one of the oldest cities in Germany.

Read more here:

Augsburg was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019, which is exactly the reason I put together this list of the best things to do in Augsburg. Most international tourists probably never heard of Augsburg before, but the city did play quite an important role in history. The famous Fugger clan had its headquarters here and (indirectly) ruled half of Europe during the Renaissance. As a free city, Augsburg also left its mark on art, especially silver and the goldsmith industry.

From lavish city palaces to magnificent cathedrals, there are just so many places to see in Augsburg.

Places to see in ( Augsburg - Germany ) Church of St Ulrich and St Afra

The Basilica of SS. Ulrich and Afra Is a Catholic parish in Augsburg, in Bavaria, which originated from the Roman tomb of St. Afra, which was martyred in 304. The building is a great example of Gothic architecture in Germany; In its interior it conserves three enormous and very precious altars of Renaissance ends considered a masterpiece of the German sculpture of the period. Its high bell tower with an onion, which dominates the city of the south, served like prototype for the construction of numerous baroque towers of Bavaria.

In 1577 (officially) and 1643-1644 (virtually) the church, which was called the Benedictine abbey of Saints Ulrich and Afra was elevated to the rank of imperial abbey.

On October 18, 1777, a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart organ concert was held. On May 4, 1782, Pope Pius VI celebrated Mass in Basilica. Secularized in 1802, it entered the possession of the State of Bavaria. In 1810 the church was elevated to parish and from July 4, 1937, declared by Pope Pius XI, a minor basilica and finally on May 4, 1987 was visited by Pope John Paul II.

Walking in AUGSBURG / Germany ????????- Central City and Fuggerei - 4K 60fps (UHD)

Augsburg is one of Germany’s oldest cities. Located in Bavaria, Augsburg is a 30 minute train ride from Munich.

We start our Augsburg tour at the Augsburger Dom and visit the cathedral for a look inside. Next we stroll through the Hofgarten which is a nice little oasis in the historical old town.

As we head South we enter the city centre visa the city market into the shopping streets. There in the centre we walk around a bit to see side streets before we go further South to the Augsburger Zeughaus and Königsplatz.

The tour continues towards the inner city going to the central Rathausplatz with renaissance buildings like Augsburg's Town Hall.

For the last part we walk out of the centre again North-East to the the Fuggerei. Founded in 1516 by Jakob Fugger the Younger, the Fugger banking dynasty ran the world's oldest social housing complex for needy citizens of Augsburg, which is walled and still in use. We spend a good 10 minutes there before we end our Augsburg walking tour.

Walking through Augsburg, Germany/ Rundgang durch die Altstadt von Augsburg

10.04.2018 - Morgens gegen 9 Uhr lief ich in der Altstadt von Augsburg herum. Ich finde das eine klasse Stadt.

The Fuggerei, Augsburg - The world's oldest social housing complex still in use

The Fuggerei is the world's oldest social housing complex still in use. It is a walled enclave within the city of Augsburg, Bavaria. It takes its name from the Fugger family and was founded in 1516 by Jakob Fugger the Younger (known as Jakob Fugger the Rich) as a place where the needy citizens of Augsburg could be housed.

By 1523, 52 houses had been built, and in the coming years the area expanded with various streets, small squares and a church. The gates were locked at night, so the Fuggerei was, in its own right, very similar to a small independent medieval town. It was expanded a few times in the next couple of centuries, the last one taking place in 1973. Before that, the complex had to be wholly rebuilt after it was damaged by bombing during World War

It is still inhabited today, affording it the status of being the oldest social housing project in the world. Each house has two apartments measuring 500 to 700 square foot with its own kitchen, a parlour, a bedroom and a tiny spare room. The steep roofs serve as attics for both families and there is no cellar. On the back of each house is a small garden.

The Fuggerei’s most famous resident was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's great-grandfather, the mason Franz Mozart, who lived in the Fuggerei between 1681 and 1694, and was commemorated posthumously by a stone plaque. About 150 people live in the society today, still paying an annual rent of the equivalent of one guilder. Even the fee for a tour into the Fuggerei costs over four times the annual rent.
