Germany is a country rich in history and culture. Some of its top attractions include the Reichstag building, the Cologne Cathedral, and the Berlin Wall. The Reichstag building is a beautiful example of German architecture, and it's home to the German parliament, the Bundestag.

The Cologne Cathedral is a stunning Gothic church that is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany. The Berlin Wall was a symbol of the Cold War, and it is now a popular spot for tourists to take photos. There are many other wonderful places to visit in Germany, and this is just a small sampling of what the country has to offer.

The first known settlers in the area of modern-day Germany were the Celts, who arrived in the region around 1000 BC. The Roman Empire eventually conquered the Celtic territory, and Germanic tribes began to settle in the area in the 4th century AD.

The Holy Roman Empire was formed in 962 AD, and would eventually become one of the most powerful empires in European history. The empire reached its height under Charlemagne, who was crowned emperor in 800 AD. However, the empire began to decline in the 10th century, and eventually fell apart in 1806.

In 1871, Germany became a united nation-state under the leadership of Otto von Bismarck. The country rapidly industrialized in the late 19th century, and became a major European power. However, Germany's ambitions led to conflict in 1914, and the country was involved in World War I.

Germany was defeated in 1918, and the Treaty of Versailles placed strict limitations on the German military. This led to growing resentment amongst the German people, and in 1933 Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power.

Under Hitler's leadership, Germany became a totalitarian state and began a program of expansionism that led to World War II. The war ended with Germany's defeat in 1945, and the country was occupied by Allied forces.

Germany began to rebuild in the 1950s and became a major economic power once again. The country was also reunited in 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today, Germany is one of the leading nations of the European Union and is a major player on the world stage.

Overnight in Meersburg, Germany - Southern Germany's Bodensee Lakeside Hidden Gem!

Join us as we kick off our biggest series yet! A road trip around Europe where we visit 5 countries for our 5 year anniversary! First up, Meersburg, Germany!

----

It's our 5 year anniversary! To celebrate, we made our way from Tucson, AZ to Europe to visit 5 different countries by train, plane and automobile!

In this first episode, we made our way through a hectic and long travel day. Our first flight took us from Tucson, AZ to San Francisco, CA with a 4.5 hour layover; enough time to grab dinner and relax. The second flight took us from SFO airport to Zurich, Switzerland. Once we arrive in Switzerland after a 10.5 hour flight, we picked up our rental car from Enterprise: a 3 cylinder Renault Clio - what would become essentially home base for a week.

After picking up the car, we drove about an hour and a half to Konstanz to take the ferry across the Bodensee to Meersburg, Germany - a quaint/quiet lakeside town with half-timbered houses/buildings, and a well preserved historic castle at the heart of town. Our first hotel of the trip: Hotel Rauchfang - a medieval themed boutique hotel that had excellent attention to detail and a charming atmosphere.

After checking in to the hotel, we settled in, freshened up, and made our way out for a sunset stroll through the town and along the lakeside. We were greeted by live acoustic music just before the hill to the entrance of the castle - Burg Meersburg. After exploring the area around the castle, we made our way over to Gutsschänke Meersburg for dinner. This place is not only special for its excellent views of the Bodensee, but also their excellent food and wine made from the grapes grown in the vineyard on the hillside below the restaurant. An excellent introduction to the fresh and flavorful food of Europe, and a perfect way to end our first evening in Germany!

Stay tuned for future episodes as we make our way to Fussen, Germany to explore Castle Nueschwanstein, down to Austria for a night in a 12th century castle (and King Ludwig's favorite vacation spot), over to Venice, Italy to stay in a 15th century palace, then across to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn, and finally up to Paris. Plenty of adventure to come, so stay tuned! Thank you for watching, we'll see you in the next one!

Things to do in Konstanz and the Bodensee in Germany!

Here is our Top 10, enjoy!

Konstanz is a charming and historic city located in the southwestern corner of Germany, right on the shores of Lake Constance (also known as Bodensee in German). The city is famous for its stunning natural beauty, its well-preserved medieval architecture, and its rich cultural heritage. With a population of around 85,000 people, Konstanz is a relatively small city that offers a high quality of life to its residents and visitors alike. In this essay, we will explore the various aspects of Konstanz and the Bodensee region, including its history, culture, geography, and attractions.

Geography and Climate

Konstanz is situated on the northeastern edge of Lake Constance, which is the third-largest freshwater lake in Europe and borders Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The city is located in the foothills of the Swiss Alps, which provide a stunning backdrop to the town. The lake itself is surrounded by picturesque countryside, vineyards, and orchards, making it a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and water sports enthusiasts.

Konstanz has a mild climate, with warm summers and cool winters. The city experiences a relatively high level of rainfall throughout the year, which helps to keep the surrounding countryside lush and green. The average temperature in the summer months is around 20°C (68°F), while in winter, the temperature drops to an average of 2°C (36°F).

History and Culture

The history of Konstanz dates back to the Roman era, when it was known as Constance. In the Middle Ages, the city became an important center of trade and commerce, thanks to its strategic location on the shores of Lake Constance. During this time, Konstanz was also a center of religious and intellectual activity, and it played a significant role in the Reformation.

Today, Konstanz is a vibrant cultural center, with a rich and diverse range of museums, galleries, theaters, and music venues. The city is home to several renowned cultural institutions, including the Bodensee Theater, the Municipal Museum, and the Rosgarten Museum. Konstanz is also famous for its annual Carnival celebration, which is one of the largest and most colorful in the region.

Attractions and Activities

One of the main attractions of Konstanz is its beautifully preserved old town, which is located on a peninsula between the Rhine River and Lake Constance. The old town is home to several impressive medieval buildings, including the Cathedral of Konstanz, which dates back to the 11th century. Other notable landmarks include the Council Building, which hosted the Council of Constance in the early 15th century, and the picturesque Konzilgebäude, a former monastery that now houses a variety of shops and restaurants.

The Bodensee region offers a wide range of activities and attractions for visitors of all ages. In addition to water sports and hiking, the area is famous for its cycling routes, which wind through scenic countryside and quaint villages. The region is also home to several world-class golf courses, as well as numerous spas and wellness centers.

For those interested in history and culture, the Bodensee region is a treasure trove of museums, galleries, and historic landmarks. The Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen is a must-see for aviation enthusiasts, while the Stifts Museum in St. Gallen is home to a stunning collection of medieval art and artifacts. The nearby city of Meersburg is famous for its well-preserved medieval castle, which offers a glimpse into the region's rich and colorful past.

GERMANY: Meersburg - town on Bodensee (lake)

Meersburg is one of the prettiest resorts on the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee), in the southwest of Germany .

The name of the town means Burg on the Sea, the former referring to the old castle which, according to an old legend and a 1548 document say that the creation of this impressive stronghold dates back to the 7th century, to the Merovingians under king Dagobert 1st.

The lakeside lower town is home to the boat and ferry landings, a lakefront promenade, hotels, restaurants, bars, and sporting activities

The upper town is a hillside cluster of historic buildings, museums, galleries, cafés, shops, and vineyards.

Museums include the Old Castle (with guided tours year-round), the New Castle (with Baroque rooms, art exhibits, and the Dornier aviation museum), the Bible Gallery, a Town Museum, the Wine Museum, and even a Zeppelin Museum that complements the larger Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen.

The lower town and upper town are reserved for pedestrians only. Both sections of town have remnants of medieval walls (including two ancient gates). You can go back and forth between the two by a steep street or two stairways.
