Tunisia's Star Wars filming locations: Mos Espa Slave Quarters in Ksar Ommarsia, Medenine

Today we take a walk around Ksar Ommarsia in Medenine City, southern Tunisia. This ksar, which continues to function as a pedestrian walkway, served as the filming location for the Mos Espa slave quarters street scenes in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Amplifying the authenticity of the historic Amazigh site to create a futuristic setting, crews dressed all four of the ksar’s walls with fresh plaster and paint, added faux doors for the majority of the ghorfas (grain storage silos pictured in my film), as well as door-frame ribbing, door control panels, cooling/heating pipes and other fixtures. Crews also stationed one moisture evaporator prop in the southwest section of the narrow courtyard and covered the at stone courtyard floor with sand, to depict the desert Tatooine climate.

We also do a 1 minute room tour of the Hotel Ksour Medenine, which is a good place to stay if you want to explore Medenine's Star Wars sites.

Tunisia Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Tunisia.
Tunis is a North African city with a long history. After the Hasfides and Osmans, the Spanish Moors came but then had to give way to French colonial rule until present day Independence. In the old town, there are more than 700 historic monuments which include 200 palaces, a colourful variety of buildings and numerous mosques.Among shoreline lava rock is the entrance to the Ghar El-Kebir, a collection of sandstone grottos. During Roman times, thousands of slaves were forced to bring building material for Carthage and El Djem from subterranean shafts. In Sousse, the simple fort of Ribat is probably the oldest Islamic building in North Africa, in which Muslim soldiers lived in monastery-like isolation and in the town’s Archaeological Museum there is a fantastic range of mosaics, predominantly from Punic and Roman excavations. Gabes is an oasis town which overflows with luxuriant floral splendour. By horse and carriage visitors can travel through one of the most beautiful maritime oases in Tunisia where, under 500,000 date palms, tobacco, henna, pumpkins, apricots and bananas thrive. The focal point of important caravan routes and trading centre for goods from Libya and Black Africa, Medenine is a very charming and lively city. Its reinforced honeycomb-shaped caves were the extraordinary-looking buildings that many will recall from the film ‘Star Wars’. The Sahara is the largest desert on earth, with different landscapes such as rock deserts, salt deserts and serene oases. Kebili is located on the edge of a huge salt lake and is a typical desert village with a green oasis and Artesian springs which provide water for its fruit and vegetable gardens. Nefta is also a green paradise in the desert, an oasis town that boasts no less than 152 Artesian wells. Dougga contains Tunisia’s most important ruins which nestle in the hills among shimmering olive trees and poppy fields. Endless deserts and fertile oases, busy towns and isolated mountain regions, Roman temples and Muslim mosques: Tunisia is tempting!

Tunisia Road Trip! Driving west: Tunis to El Kef (Tunisia Travel VLOG)

Life in Tunisia is pretty great! Join me in the latest Tunisia travel VLOG as I head off overlanding to explore Kef Governorate, in the north-west of the country, by the border with Algeria. Today we check out the vista at Mellegue Dam, the Ancient Roman arch at Musti (Mustis) and have a few technical issues at a motorway toll booth! Finally we arrive at Dar Sidi Abdallah, which will be the base from which we explore the governorate in later videos. Don't worry, I will also do a separate video on the beautiful facilities at Dar Sidi Abdallah, which I recommend!

Coast North of Sousse

Today we are exploring some coastal tourist sites north of Sousse. We begin with the very tourist-friendly Port El Kantaoui, complete with golf course and modern marina. We then drive north 10km to reach Sebkhet Halk el Manzel, an amazing salt lake that is home to a large flock of Greater Flamingo. This is designated as a Ramsar Site, because it is a Wetland of International Importance. We then drive another 10km north to Plage El Madfoun, a beautiful sandy beach on the north side of the quaint seaside town of Hergla (which has loads of great eating options!) From Hergla, we head 30km north to the archaeological site of Uppenna, where we find a Byzantine fortress and also a basilica with mosaics and Latin inscriptions. We finish the exploration driving 20km northwest to Takrouna, for a rather sad update on the situation at the popular Amazigh Café Le Rocher Bleu.

Tunis to Tabarka: road trip / enjoying life in Tunisia, North Africa (Travel VLOG / Tunisia VLOG)

This week in my Tunisia VLOG I have been exploring Tunisia's far north-west, over by the Algerian border in North Africa. My first stop in Jendouba Governorate was Tabarka, a beautiful coastal resort town in the Kroumirie mountainous region. The drive over there took me through the fertile (and hot) plains around Béja, which have been agriculturally significant since before Ancient Roman times. We then climbed up into the cork oak forests, which look very Alpine and are a lot cooler during the summer months than Tunis.

It wouldn't be a Scafidi Travels road trip without some kind of mechanical problem, but in the end the Mitsubishi and I made it in one piece and got to enjoy the town's main beach, overlooking the 16th century Genoese fortress. I will definitely be heading back to Tabarka soon for two reasons: firstly, I still need to review La Cigale, which is a luxury hotel on the coast that friends tell me is one of the best in the country. Secondly, the beaches around town had some serious surf potential, and I need to try surfing in Tunisia! Life in Tunisia is great!

Stay tuned for more videos of my most recent road trip, as I head south from Tabarka to Aïn Draham, Beni 'Mtir, Hammam Bourguiba, Jendouba, Bulla Regia and Chemtou!

Exploring the Ksour (ancient hill forts) of southern Tunisia around Tataouine - Bradt Guides

Tataouine Governorate in southern Tunisia is most famous as one of the sites where George Lucas shot the original Star Wars films in the 1970s. However, it is also full of ksour: fortified granaries built by the local tribes between the eleventh and nineteenth centuries. Join me as I drive the 50km Maztouria Loop to the south-east of Tataouine and explore nine of the ksour of Jebel Abiadh (the White Mountains).

Some ksour are on mountains, some are on hilltops, a few are even on valley floors. Most are now abandoned, with a few being destroyed by French colonial forces due to local resistance to French rule. However, some of these incredible buildings have either been restored as historical sites, sites of pilgrimage for Star Wars fans or are in current use as housing, market places or even tourist accommodation!

Tunisian Oasis Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Tunisian Oasis in Tunisia.
Gabes is the beginning of a journey through what is the fascinating oasis of Tunisia, that contains all the mystique of the Orient: art, culture, history and endless desert horizons.

The Ghorfas of Medenine boast a variety of souvenir shops and in the past, the multi-floored mud buildings served as dwellings and storage areas for the semi-nomads of the region. A Ghorfa is a collection of buildings that form part of large complexes with hundreds of buildings grouped together around large courtyards.

Surrounded by desert is the sleepy village of Douz that was once a thriving camel trading centre. Now it contains markets and is also the location of the famous Sahara Festival.

The Torra Ruins in Mansurah are a further highlight of the journey across the Tunisian oasis. The sun beats down relentlessly on the boundless Sahara and individual palm trees appear as green guardians of the oasis.

Tozeur, the 'Eden of The Desert', is a safe haven for almost 20 villages. Its unique architecture is highly impressive and the walls of its houses consist of loam bricks that form geometrical patterns.

Nefta's new town with its nearby souk quarter is situated in the east. On the western side is the older district with its sacred buildings and twisting alleys. For more than 1,000 years the town has been the religious centre of a mystic Moslem sect known as the Sufis.

As the shadows of evening begin to fall and the light of the setting sun illuminates the Tunisian oasis in a spectacular purple light, everything combines to make this a most memorable and atmospheric experience.

#xplorTN - Discovering Tunisia in 30 days

GEYC (Romania) & AVER (Tunisia) decided to join the Euromed Exchange Programme organized by the Anna Lindh Foundation and thus to exchange experiences in the youth and cultural fields as well as to reinforce the cooperation regarding future projects.

This short documentary focuses on the young people participation and the challenges young people face mainly in the south of Tunisia: radicalization towards extremist organisations and youth unemployment.

Our colleague, Gabriel Brezoiu was hosted by AVER in Medenine, Tunisia. The objective of his exchange was the following:

Leading non-formal education workshops for local young people, activists, youth workers and young professionals in Tunisia on the following topics:

a. Project Management for beginners and for advanced practitioners (needs assessment, project design, project writing, project implementation, project evaluation, tools);
b. Digital Marketing and eSkills for Volunteers;

ITALIAN BIKERS explore the REAL TUNISIA and the SAHARA | Group Motorcycle Travel | SPECIAL EDITION

We recently (March 2023) went on a group motorcycle trip with @motoperpetuocommunity to TUNISIA. Together we explored and discovered the wonderful Tunisian countryside as well as towns and villages.
Starting from Palermo, Sicily, we took the ferry to cross to La Goullette, Tunis, and then rode 2,494km down to the south of Tunisia and back up north again.
We educated our minds on this beautiful and often underrated North African country.
Tunisia is a place that's full of kind and warm people who welcomed us everywhere we went. And what's more?! We had the most adventurous time riding through the Sahara - sand, mountains, and a dried-up lake.
