Kinshasa has the largest population of any city in Africa with a population of 14 million within the City limits, and is also the 2nd largest French-speaking city in the world behind Paris. After decades of armed conflicts imposed by neighbouring countries, the infrastructures of the once leading modern African city are now being remarkably restored. Chinese companies are involved in numerous projects of reconstruction throughout the city.

Travel in Congo River by public transport

Democratic Republic of Congo
Life on the Congo River
With a fleet of colonial-era ferries, freighters, tugboats and balaniers in a deplorable state of repair, travelling the 1,700-kilometre stretch from Kinshasa to Kisangani is an odyssey for Congolese that can take anywhere from five weeks to seven or eight months.
The ferries (up to 500 metres long) and balaniers become veritable floating slums, where between 500 and 2000 people can travel in overcrowded conditions without electricity or clean water for many months.
There, markets are formed, markets are traded, cooking is done, friendships are made, people get sick and healthy, relationships are formed, there is time for chatting and drinking, good and bad times, in short, on the waters of the Congo, life is lived.

Congo River in Kinshasa‎, Democratic Republic of the Congo

The ultimate Congo experience – a voyage on the mighty Congo River from the city of Lisala to Kisangani. The expedition takes in remote villages, some of the country’s important historical sights, rain forests and of course a chance to meet the local people.

The Congo River, formerly known as the Zaire River during the dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko, is the second longest river in Africa, shorter only than the Nile, as well as the second largest river in the world by discharge volume, following only the Amazon. It is also the world's deepest recorded river, with measured depths in excess of 220 m. The Congo-Lualaba-Chambeshi River system has an overall length of 4,700 km, which makes it the world's ninth-longest river. The Chambeshi is a tributary of the Lualaba River, and Lualaba is the name of the Congo River upstream of Boyoma Falls, extending for 1,800 km.

Measured along with the Lualaba, the main tributary, the Congo River has a total length of 4,370 km. It is the only major river to cross the equator twice. The Congo Basin has a total area of about 4,000,000 km2, or 13% of the entire African landmass.

Experience the different sights and sounds of the real Africa as you travel through a land so few travellers have yet discovered. We travel using our river cruiser, an 18-meter long, wooden boat, equipped with two powerful outboard engines. The boat is further equipped with safety equipment, sanitary installation, a generator, lighting and freezers. It is operated by a licensed and experienced captain, a mechanic and a sailor. A cook and a tourist guide are present throughout. Evenings and nights are spent ashore, enabling cultural exchanges with the local population.

This is an incredible journey through one of the world’s least explored areas – for us this is the very essence of adventure, and we are proud to offer this iconic trip to our clients.

The second part of our voyage takes us upriver from Lisala to our final destination, the city of Kisangani. The journey is expected to take 10-nights and, as with the voyage to Lisala, each night will be spent ashore at or close to a village where we can buy fresh produce, prepare dinner and set-up our tented camp. Highlights include Bumba, where the Congo is at its widest, some 20 kilometres across, and covered with water hyacinths. Closer to Kisangani we travel through Yangambi, an important Biosphere Reserve which hosts 32,000 tree species. Wildlife in the reserve includes elephants, river hogs and monkeys.

Rwanda Congo Uganda Bike Adventure - Trailer

Streaming now on ADVENTURE SPORTS TV!
Download the app:

The “Rwanda Congo Uganda Bike Adventure” is the video story of a 4-week trip to the heart of Africa by Michele Sanna, a long-time bike traveller who loves cycling alone and making films of his travels without the help of any crew.
Departing from Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, he reached, passing through both paved roads and dirty tracks, (discovering the difficulty of pedaling in the so called “Country of the thousand hills”), the Nyungwe National Park, one of the most intact mountain forest areas in central Africa, where 13 species of monkeys reside, almost 20% of the whole continent.
A long descent brought him from the 2500 meters of the Park to the 1700 of Lake Kivu, an immense lake basin that serves as the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo and from where it starts the “Congo Nile Trail”, a 220 km route that runs along the lake from north to south. Born as a trekking itinerary to be completed in 10 days, it has also been presented to be doable by mountain bike in 5 days, but, as Michele will discover, preferably without luggage and not with a bike equipped for 4 weeks of travel! In fact, after the first 100 km of asphalted road, the route becomes a path that arches through the mountains and along lost paths, which only with the use of gps you can follow. In any case, despite the effort, the“Congo Nile Trail” will remain one of the gems of the trip, thanks to the isolation of the places visited and the beauty of the stops along Lake Kivu.
The route ends in Gisenyi, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Michele leaves his bike and enters the latter country, to visit the Virunga National Park . Escorted by park rangers (unfortunately the situation in Congo is not very safe and therefore it is necessary to travel with an armed escort) had a close encounter in the jungle with the gorillas and the next day climbed the spectacular Nyiragongo volcano.
Back in Rwanda, Michele resumed his bicycle and started cycling again towards Uganda, which reached after long climbs that brought him to the “Volcano region”, still at an altitude of 2500 meters. A well-deserved rest (after trekking in Congo and climbing in Rwanda) on the lake Mutanda, in Uganda, surrounded by volcanoes and the numerous fauna of birds, allowed him to regain his strength and make the last part of the journey to reach the savannahs of the Queen Elisabeth National Park. Also in this case it was not easy, because the track to reach them was much harder than expected, but after 3 days of pedaling he reached the gates of the National Park. Of course it was not possible to cross it by bicycle, so renting a car he could go to the gate exit and take advantage of it to make safaris to see the classic fauna of the African savannah. The journey ended at Kasese, a few km after the equator line, which Michele could not find and make the much-awaited final photo, because the road works in progress had cancelled it!
However, the journey had ended, despite the apprehensions at the departure (due to the passage from one State to another and to the potential problems with the visas) and to the difficulties encountered (climbs, very hard tracks and also, before entering Congo, the alarm for an Ebola epidemic). But everything was amply rewarded not only by the beauty of the places visited, but especially by the contact with the people who, despite the tragic stories of the past (genocide in Rwanda and dictatorial regime of Idi Amin in Uganda) and present (rebels and guerrillas in Congo) has always greeted Michele with great smiles and affection, surrounding him (often also physically) with humanity and hospitality and allowing him to complete the“Rwanda Congo Uganda Bike Adventure”!
