The Shocks of Visiting Ireland

What to Know Before You Visit Ireland

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

Maynooth

Ireland

Maynooth, village, County Kildare, Ireland, situated 15 miles (24 km) west of Dublin. Historic remains in the locality include those of a castle built by Gerald FitzMaurice (died 1203) and an early manorial church that has been incorporated into the Church of Ireland. In medieval times Maynooth was at the perimetre of the English Pale. St. Patrick’s College at Maynooth is the largest Roman Catholic seminary in the British Isles; it was established in 1795 on the site of a college founded by the earl of Kildare in the 16th century and is now part of the National University of Ireland. The university, with some 5,000 students, is central to the village’s cultural life. In 1979 Pope John Paul II visited the university. At the east end of the town is the scenic Carton estate, the former residence of the dukes of Leinster. Carton House, designed in Neoclassic style, was built about 1740. Over the last several decades of the 20th century, the village experienced rapid population growth. Pop. (2002) 10,151; (2011) 12,510.

4K Walk in Maynooth Ireland Winter 2021

4K Walk in Maynooth Ireland Filmed in winter 2021
The town is just inside the western edge of The Pale. It has, at either end of the main street, Maynooth Castle and Carton House, two former seats of the Dukes of Leinster. The castle was a stronghold of the 16th century historical figure Thomas FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Kildare who was better known as Silken Thomas. The castle was overrun in 1535, after the rebellion of the Earl.
The population of 14,585 (according to the census in 2016) makes Maynooth the fifth largest settlement in Kildare and the 31st largest settlement in Ireland. However, during the academic year the population of Maynooth nearly doubles in size.Measurement can be difficult as much of the population is transient – students at Maynooth University (above 12,000) or St. Patrick's College, or temporary employees at the nearby Intel and Hewlett Packard Enterprise facilities (both located in Leixlip).

Travel and walks in Ireland:

Studying Abroad in Ireland

For the past six weeks, I had the amazing opportunity to live and study abroad in Maynooth, Ireland. I went to a lot of breath taking places and met a lot of really amazing people. Here is a little montage of random clips I took during my stay here. I hope you enjoy.

Hotel Review: Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland - August, 2017

Hotel Review: Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland -
August, 2017.

I stayed at the Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland in August 2017. Two of us stayed for two nights over a weekend, bed and breakfast, which cost £288 booked with Booking.com.

The hotel is very centrally located in the town, a 2 minute walk from where the Airport Hopper bus drops you off, and a 5 minute walk from Maynooth Railway station. We arrived early due to catching an early flight, but despite this we were found a room by very helpful and friendly receptionist 'Katie' and could so check in several hours early.

After checking in, we had a good breakfast at the Shoda Market Cafe, which is within the hotel building (Farmer John's or Farmer Jack's Breakfast - the precise name escapes me).

The hotel is very well presented with thick carpets and well maintained decor. The room we were allocated 207, was fairly small, with just a double bed, I must admit we have got used to king-sized beds when staying in hotels, so this bed did feel a bit on the small side. The bathroom had a walk-in shower, with just a small step up, along with sink and toilet, all good really.

One of the reasons that we booked this hotel, was that it had a swimming pool, what we had not realised though, was that the hotel had two large pools, one a family 'leisure' pool, the other an adult only swimming pool. Both of the pools were great. The adult pool was often busy, but we found that the leisure pool was fairly quiet on an evening. They were a real high point of our stay, the swimming pools and leisure facilities at this hotel are truly excellent.

The restaurant was very busy at breakfast, but we managed to find a table. The breakfast is buffet style, but the hot items are served to you by some very fast and efficient chefs.

The hotel has a very good bar, Saint's Bar, which the Rose of Tralee contestants were enjoying a singalong in there one evening during our stay.

Unfortunately our room was not great, it was South facing and got very hot, but if you opened the window you got the noises and smells from the extractor fans from the kitchen and restaurant. What was worse though, was that out neighbour in room 205 was very loud on the phone for long periods of time, and we could hear every word, the walls between rooms are evidently thin. We decided to ask if we could move rooms, and again Katie on reception was exceptionally helpful. We moved along the corridor to room 211, which was still south facing and hot, but at least we no longer had the noisy neighbour.

If I ever visit Maynooth again in future, I would still consider staying at this hotel, BUT I would ask for a room on the 2nd floor at the very end of a corridor with a car park view. If you are considering staying here, I would recommend you making this request before your stay.

In summary, this is an excellent hotel, with great staff, excellent leisure facilities and a super breakfast, but the rooms and beds are a little on the small side, the bedroom walls are seemingly quite thin, and the South facing rooms get very hot on sunny days.

This film features external views of the hotel, the reception, The Roses of Tralee (who were attending an event at the hotel), the lift / elevator, the 2nd floor, detailed room reviews of room 207 and 211, the breakfast buffet, the restaurant, the leisure club, the leisure swimming pool, the adult swimming pool, the hydro-therapy pool, Shoda Market Cafe and Saint's Bar.
