A Hidden Gem - Pujada Island, Mati City
An island riched with a coral reef system, white-sand beaches, and a stunning view of the Mati's finest Sleeping Dinosaur. This island right here can be found at Mati City, Davao Oriental, one of the best and most visited places to look forward to well-deserved leisure of relaxation and repose.
This hidden gem can be reached through local boats of beach resorts in Mati City. On our visit, we hired two local boats (small) with a 7 person capacity each and paid 2,000 pesos for a round trip ride. It was a lot of fun and excitement going to the island, though it can be a little dangerous once it gets windy and sea waves are getting high. However, if you want to ensure safe travel with a life vest on, you would want to hire a much bigger boat with a price of 3,500 pesos with a capacity of 14 persons. Upon arrival, an entrance fee of 50 pesos for adults and 30 pesos for kids. Tables and chairs are then offered for 200 pesos and cottages for corresponding prices.
Travel Tips:
1. Bring your food and water. No restaurants are available, though you can also purchase and cook fresh catch fishes from the local fishermen.
2. No bathrooms and comfort rooms are available. The area is still on the progress of development.
3. Bring Tents for your comfort.
4. Recharge all your gadgets if you want to have a lot of pictures as there is no access to electricity.

Mati, also referred to as Mati City, is the capital of the province of Davao Oriental, Philippines. It is located on the south-eastern side of Mindanao. Mati is known for its beautiful beaches and for its surfing.
In this video, we will tour resorts, surfing schools that provide surfing lessons at Mayo Bay. We will stop at two surf shops at Dahican Beach, So Surf Mindanao and Sheepys surf shop located at Dahican Surf Resort. Located in MAti City, a 4 hours drive from Davao City.
Mati is located on the south-eastern side of Mindanao.
Mati comes from the Mandayan word Maa-ti which refers to the town's creek that easily dries up even after heavy rain. Pioneer settlers were tribes Kalagan, Mandayan, and Maranao which carried strong Arabic and Indo-Malayan influences.
Spanish period
Captain Prudencio Garcia, the pioneer political-military head in 1861, and his comrade Juan Nazareno founded the settlement of Mati and two other communities in Davao Oriental.
American period
By October 29, 1903, Mati was declared a municipality by virtue of Act No. 21. By 1907, Act No. 189 further reaffirmed the establishment of its local government. Francisco Rojas was the first appointed mayor while the first elected mayor was Patricio Cunanan in 1923. Mati became the capital of Davao Oriental in 1967.
Japanese occupation and World War II
The Japanese Imperial forces landed in town and occupied most of eastern Davao region in 1942. Mati was liberated in 1945 by the Allied Philippine Commonwealth troops of the 6th, 10th, 101st, 102nd, 103rd, 104th, 106th, 107th and 110th Infantry Division of the Philippine Commonwealth Army, 10th Infantry Regiment of the Philippine Constabulary and the Davaoeño guerrilla units.
