Ticino TOP 10 Places to Visit: Lugano, Locarno, Bellinzona and much more in the Swiss Italian canton

If you are planning to visit Ticino, in Switzerland and close and close to the Italian border, I strongly recommend that you carefully select the places to visit. There are such wonderful places to discover! In this video, you’ll find the best tips on things to do in this region, with a sightseeing map of the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Ticino!

In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Morcote, Verzasca valley and Corippo, Ascona, Bellinzona and its Tibetan bridge, Locarno,
Bellinzona, Lugano, Foroglio.
- Then, I’ll describe HOW to follow a tour to better visit Ticino, with a clear map of the region.
- Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Ticino, with its heritage and nature.

But let’s start from the beginning: Ticino, south of Switzerland or, if you want, the Italian flair of Switzerland!
Yes, there is a feel of Italy, looking for example at the alleys that lead to squares and promenades.
But the Alps are always close by.
From mountains to Ticino's lakes, you can enjoy your time in the colder season and in the summertime, letting yourself immerse in all its nature and historical heritage.
So, what are the best attractions you cannot miss if you visit this wonderful land?

MORCOTE
From the city of Lugano you can easily reach the former fishing village of Morcote, one of the most frequently photographed places in Ticino, voted Switzerland's most beautiful village in 2016. A spectacular Way of the Cross leads up about 400 steps to the church of Santa Maria del Sasso.

VALLE VERZASCA
Verzasca Valley is the most fascinating valley of Ticino, to be experienced at the bottom for romantics and families, and at high altitude for the adventurous. Visit the picturesque double arches of the Ponte dei Salti, in Lavertezzo. Walk the Boccia al Bosco trail where, with a 'boccia' ball in your hand, you can walk and have fun in the woods. At the entrance to the valley is the Verzasca dam, where James Bond once jumped! And, in this valley, you can also admire the village of Corippo.

ASCONA
Ascona is a real treasure! It’s the lowest Switzerland town, located at 196 meters above sea level, and it’s famous for its mild climate, the Old Town and the lake promenade.

BELLINZONA
In Bellinzona, the capital of Ticino, you can explore narrow streets and squares, examples of centuries of history written by Romans, Lombards and Swiss. Picturesque corners, courtyards and neo-Classical facades, can remember you a Lombardy town. The skyline of Bellinzona is defined by three of the best-preserved medieval castles in Switzerland, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

PONTE TIBETANO CARASC
The tibetan bridge Carasc allows the passage of the rugged valley that separates the communities of Sementina and Monte Carasso, two villages located in front of Bellinzona. It is a unique experience to go through its 270 meters, at 130 m above the ground!

LOCARNO
Locarno, located on the northern shore of Lago Maggiore, is the town with the warmest climate in Switzerland. Palm trees and lemon trees give the city its special charm. The heart of the city is Piazza Grande. Castello Visconteo, a castle dating back to the 12th century, lies at the edge of the Old Town. But maybe the best attraction of the city, with its extraordinary view, is the church of Madonna del Sasso.

BELLINZONA-LOCARNO CYCLE ROUTE ALONG THE TICINO RIVER
50 kilometers (31 miles) of cycle path surrounded by greenery and along the Ticino river.
Here the link to the GPS route:

LUGANO
Lugano, the largest town of Ticino, is not only the Switzerland's third most important financial centre, but also a town of parks, villas and sacred buildings. By the lakeside promenade are the Belvedere Gardens.

FOROGLIO
In the scenic village of Foroglio you can find peace, stone houses called “Rustici”, and an amazing waterfall. It’s probably the most beautiful village to visit in Ticino along with Morcote, Ascona and Corippo.

FOOD TIPS
The final bonus track is of course about food: in Ticino you can taste polenta, minestrone, risotto and much more.

The Italian stretch of the Via Francigena measures almost 1000 km and yet most of the pilgrims and walkers are concentrated in the Tuscan and Lazio stretch, especially from Lucca to descend.
The Val d'Orcia is spectacular, Lucca Siena and San Gimignano are real jewels but skipping everything that comes first is in our opinion a real shame.
So here we have decided to return to the Via Francigena and walk in its Lombard stretch, including a strip of Piedmont and one of Emilia.
In this stage we will take you from Vercelli to Nicorvo and for the occasion we will not be alone.
A peculiarity of the Lombard section is the capillary presence of railway stations along the route, you may also find two or more stations on the same route and this allows you to adapt the route to your needs and to travel the Way on weekends, especially on beautiful autumn days. or spring.
2021 was the year of the Road to Rome initiative in which various walkers sponsored by the Vie Francigene Association took turns walking from Canterbury to Rome.
We have not been able to participate due to commitments already made but this is our modest contribution, we hope you will like it.
Here instead the playlist of the Via Francigena we traveled in the past: //youtube.com/playlist? List = PL5wHLOlo0WdSqJfa6FenxOMRVQ9NDZEfk

A Glimpse Of Lombardy (Lombardia) in Italy | Ticino & Certosa di Pavia

Website:
Watch it in 6K resolution!

A short cinematic 4K aerial drone video of the Ticino river and the stunning Monastery of the Certosa di Pavia in the Lombardia (Lombardy) region in Italy.

PONTE DELLE BARCHE NEAR BEREGUARDO ON THE TICINO RIVER

The 'Ponte delle barche' pontoon bridge on the Ticino river, near the small town of Bereguardo dates back to the 14th century (1374). It has a 700 years history, dating back to the Visconti family felt the need to be able to cross the river.
In 1449 the Sforza family built a stable pontoon bridge. Before the unification of Italy, each side was patrolled by border agents and soldiers of the Piemonte region and the Austrian Hungarian Empire.
Throughout the years it was fixed and upgraded several times and in 1913 the current version of the bridge was built with cement boats. It was supposed to be temporary, but it survived both WWI and WWII.
The river mimics the flooding of the river and it rises and lowers according to the river level.
The bridge in the Parco del Ticino has also been the location of choice for a few movies, including Adriano Celentano's ‘Mani di Velluto’ (1979) and ‘Il bisbetico domato’ (1980). Maintanance costs of the bridge are around 70.000 euros a year and the bridge, despite being an historical treasure, suffers from lack of funds and lack of water, probably due to climate change. Most of the boats are not able to float anymore, sue to lack of water, making the whole structure weaker.

LA CERTOSA DI PAVIA (THE MONASTERY OF THE CERTOSA OF PAVIA)

The Certosa di Pavia is a monastery and complex in Lombardy, northern Italy, situated near a small town of the same name in the Province of Pavia, 8 km north of Pavia. Built in 1396-1495, it was once located on the border of a large hunting park belonging to the Visconti family of Milan, of which today only scattered parts remain. It is one of the largest monasteries in Italy.
Certosa is the Italian name for a house of the cloistered monastic order of Carthusians founded by St. Bruno in 1044 at Grande Chartreuse. Though the Carthusians in their early centuries were known for their seclusion and asceticism and the plainness of their architecture, the Certosa is renowned for the exuberance of its architecture, in both the Gothic and Renaissance styles, and for its collection of artworks which are particularly representative of the region.
The church is built on a Latin cross plan, with a nave, two aisles and transept, typical of Gothic architecture. The chancel terminates with an apse. It is covered by crossed vaults on Gothic arches and is inspired, on a reduced scale, by the Duomo of Milan. The vaults are alternatively decorated with geometrical shapes and starry skies. The transept and the main chapel end with square-plan chapels with smaller, semi-circular apses on three sides.

The façade of the church is famous for its exuberant decorations, typical of Lombard architecture, every part being decorated with reliefs, inlaid marble and statues. Sculptors who worked on it include Cristoforo Mantegazza and Giovanni Antonio Amadeo himself. In addition to applied sculpture, the facade itself has a rich sculptural quality because of the contrast between richly textured surfaces, projecting buttresses, horizontal courses and arched openings, some of which are shadowed, while those in the small belfries are open to the sky.

In 1492 Gian Giacomo Dolcebuono took up the construction, assisted on site, for he was concurrently occupied with the cathedrals at Pavia and at Milan and other churches, by his inseparable collaborator on both cathedrals, Giovanni Antonio Amadeo.
