Wild NICARAGUAN STREET FOOD in Masaya Market!! Making Almíbar in Masaya, Nicaragua!!

????????VISIT NICARAGUA:
????????CARLOS:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

My road trip through the amazing country of Nicaragua continued in the city of Masaya, where I’d get to visit a local market. Come with me as I explore Masaya Market and try some Nicaraguan sweets!

These sweets, called almíbar, are traditionally made for the week of Easter Sunday. I’d tried this sweet, which is basically candied fruit, at the Municipal Market in Granada earlier that morning. It’s sticky, super sweet, and very tasty!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

My guide Carlos from Visita Nicaragua and I entered the facility at Freddy Chavez dulceria, where they had a ton of different ingredients set up. I could see mango, coconut, papaya, jocote, and more.

First, they boil the fruit to kill any microbes, and then they mix it with sugar. It’s scorching inside the facility from the fire.

They mixed the fruit in a large pot along with blocks of sugar and spices, before they let it slow cook for 4-5 hours. Once it’s done, it becomes a condensed sugary fruit marmalade!

It’s thick and saccharine, and I liked that I could taste the flavors of all the different fruits. I liked it a lot. It was an excess of sweetness. It’s perfect if you have a sweet tooth. The papaya was my favorite because it was so meaty!

They were so nice! They gifted us an entire pan of almíbar before we left! It was so hot inside that Carlos poured a bottle of cold water over my head to cool me off.

Then, we headed to Masaya Market, which is one of the largest in Nicaragua. It’s not a touristy area, but there are a ton of craft vendors there selling unique things including masks.

It’s a must-visit when you drive from Managua to Granada and is the best place to buy souvenirs. I could see woven baskets, wooden toy cars and trucks, dolls, guitars, figurines, and more.

Then, I found some masks. They were really cool and colorful! I saw some nice, traditional ones but wanted to explore the whole market and then come back for them.

Further on, we saw vendors selling crackers called rosquillas, cerdo con yuca (pork with yucca), and chicharron. We also saw a shop selling shoes made in Masaya, including lots of leather sandals.

I wanted to get some for my daughters and then tried on some for myself, but it was a little too big. They gave me a discount! I also saw some cute dresses for my daughters and niece for 750 cordobas, or roughly $22 USD.

They also had some awesome great jerseys and shirts. I loved the dolls, and I also saw some incredible, beautiful belts and leather wallets and coin purses. The wallets were only $10 USD.

Next, we saw a woman who had butchered a whole pig. She had some massive pieces of fried chicharron, which were crunchy but still soft enough to enjoy. I also tried some moronga, or blood sausage!

The blood sausage was soft and grainy but also had a sweetness to the iron-rich flavor. I loved it! It was the best one I’d had in the country so far! I couldn’t stop eating it!

Further on, we saw spicy sausages and a pork organ dish called chanfaina! The heart in the salsa was so good! It was so dense and packed with iron. I loved it!

As we continued, we also saw a barber shop, kitchenware, pinatas, and more. After some refreshing orange juice in a bag, we headed back to buy some masks!

They had some nice animal ones, as well as some traditional ones. I got some horses for myself and a few more as gifts. They cost 1,750 cordoba, or about $50 for five.

Travel is not just about taking a vacation; it's a life-changing experience that can broaden your horizons, challenge your perceptions, and transform your life in ways you never imagined. Whether you're an adventure seeker, a culture enthusiast, or simply looking to relax and unwind, travel has the power to enrich your life in countless ways.

One of the keys to making travel more accessible and affordable is travel hacking. Travel hacking is the art of leveraging rewards points, credit card bonuses, and other travel perks to save money and travel more frequently. It's a smart and strategic way to make the most of your travel budget and explore destinations that may have seemed out of reach before.

The positive effects of travel are manifold. First and foremost, travel allows you to step out of your comfort zone and embrace new experiences. It opens your mind to different cultures, customs, and perspectives, helping you become more adaptable, tolerant, and open-minded. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the world and develop a global mindset that will serve you well in all aspects of life.

Travel also fosters personal growth and self-discovery. It pushes you to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and develop resilience. You'll learn to trust yourself, make decisions, and navigate unfamiliar situations with confidence. Traveling solo, in particular, can be a transformative experience that boosts your self-esteem and independence.

Moreover, travel provides opportunities for learning and education that go beyond the classroom. You'll gain insights into history, art, architecture, and the environment by exploring new destinations firsthand. You'll learn new languages, try local cuisines, and engage with people from diverse backgrounds, broadening your knowledge and perspective.

Another incredible benefit of travel is the lasting memories and relationships it creates. From breathtaking sunsets on secluded beaches to heartwarming encounters with locals, travel offers unforgettable moments that become cherished memories for a lifetime. You'll also meet fellow travelers who share the same passion for adventure and create lifelong friendships and connections around the world.

Additionally, travel has a positive impact on your mental health and well-being. Stepping away from the stresses of daily life and immersing yourself in new surroundings can reduce stress, boost mood, and increase happiness. Traveling also encourages physical activity, whether it's hiking, swimming, or simply exploring a new city on foot, which has numerous health benefits.

In conclusion, travel is a transformative and enriching experience that can have profound positive effects on your life. And with travel hacking, it's easier than ever to make your travel dreams a reality. I spent a week in Nicaragua, and here’s how it went:

This was my 3rd and final week on the road in Central America in 2022 and I was honestly exhausted. My cellphone broke on my third day in Managua and it caused me to miss out on a few days of exploring! I didn’t get to do half the things on my bucketlist, but I still wanted to share this.

Day 1: Took the bus from Guatemala City thru El Salvador, Honduras and arrived in Managua in the late evening, and only had time to go for dinner and get to sleep. Please do your research for immigration requirements going into Honduras in transit. I booked the night before, and you need to submit a request to enter 7 days ahead of travel, and pay small fees, so the stress was real!! Glad they let me in!

Day 2: Free walking tour around parque central, Palacio National and el malecon.

Day 3: Took the local bus from the terminal to León ($2) which is 1.5 hours away. Explored the cathedrals and the market.
Spent the evening watching lava brew at the top on volcan Masaya. Surreal experience!

Day 4: Drove out to Granada. Walked around the city’s centre, trying new foods and baked good. Checking out the old Cathedrals and having lunch along the river. On the way back, stopped in Catalina to watch the sunset from the top of a lagoon. What a beauty this country is!

Recommended:
Day 5: Planned to visit San Juan del Sur (3 hours by bus)

Day 6: Had booked a tour Cerro Negro which offers a small hike and boarding/sliding down the side of the volcano.

Day 7: Took the bus back to El Salvador and flew home.

If you want to see where my trip started, make sure to watch my adventures in both El Salvador & Guatemala:

Nicaragua Travel Guide | Itinerary, Mistakes & Tips

#Nicaragua #TravelGuide #NicaraguaTravel

After 2 months travelling around Nicaragua and visiting most of the well-known places, I thought it would be useful to produce a travel guide of sorts for Nicaragua.

Places visited: San Juan Del Sur, Popoyo, Playa Colorados, Ometepe, Granada, Managua, Corn Islands and Leon.

If I had to choose two places to visit in Nicaragua they would be Granada and Corn Islands (followed closely by Popoyo and Ometepe). Granada is a lovely town but the real jewel is visiting Laguna de Apoyo and Masaya Volcano which is one hell of a day. Corn Islands is, well, a Caribbean paradise and a place to really relax amongst beautiful surroundings.

If I had to skip two places they would have to be San Juan Del Sur and Leon, although both places are still good to visit if you have the time! The reason for skipping these two are that San Juan Del Sur needs the tourists for attractions like Sunday Funday to work - obviously at the moment there are a limited amount of tourists. Leon is nice but the main tourist attraction is the cathedral which, whilst incredible and the roof makes for incredible pictures, it's a bit out of the way and doesn't offer a whole lot else.

Nicaragua is incredibly diverse which makes it great for travelling - it's also much cheaper than Costa Rica. To give you an idea we spent less than a third on a monthly basis compared to our expenses in Costa Rica.

There are a few things that I think all travellers should be aware of:

1. Internet speeds are on the whole terrible. If you buy a local sim it is far more stable but generally speaking, the wifi isn't reliable enough to work off. As such, if you're a digital nomad or looking to work remotely in Nicaragua I think that you'll struggle....or at least I did.

2. Taxis are really affordable both in cities and between towns. However, for some reason even if you have a map with you they seemingly refuse to use it (even if they don't know where you are staying). This was perplexing and frustrating. Also, always clarify pricing. We got stung a few times because we didn't fully clarify prices or the taxi waited for us when we hadn't asked them to.

3. We had some issues crossing the Nicaraguan border back to Costa Rica because the stamp was barely readable from he Nicaragua border. This is highly unlikely to happen to anyone else, but for us it did mean that the bus left without us at Peñas Blancas.

4. I can't really comment on the political situation in Nicaragua but it is something that people ask about. Do your own research here as I had to previously change travel plans due to unrest.
