The sun-kissed old town of Lecce is a small but very picturesque place in the Italian region of Puglia, on the Salentina Peninsula. The locals call this capital of the province of the same name: the Athens of Puglia - for the fact that the ethnic Greek minority lives here, and South Florence - for the abundance of architectural monuments in the Baroque style, and the Golden City - for the limestone rock mined here, which acquires a golden hue as the years pass. Most of the buildings here are made of this stone, and they all glow golden in the sunlight.
St. Orontius is considered the patron saint of the city - many churches and temples of the city are dedicated to him. He was the first bishop of Lecce, and according to legend - a disciple of the Apostle Paul himself and a martyr, who repeatedly suffered for his faith and was later rewarded for it. Lecce is a prime example of a city with a true Italian way of life. Despite the fact that the population barely reaches 100 thousand inhabitants, and during the day on weekdays there reigns peace and quiet, on weekends the city revives, people flood the streets, there are interesting processions and street performances, restaurants and nightclubs open.
Rose-golden Lecce has an unmistakable style, with monuments dating back to Roman times and, most notably, its extraordinary 17th-century buildings that proudly bare the characteristic blonde colour of the local stone. The atmosphere is vibrant and bustling. During the day, you can while away the hours sunbathing on its beaches, only a few kilometres from the city. In the evening, the city centre will entice you with its elegant, timeless alleyways and delicious local delicacies.
