Graz Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Graz in Austria.
Graz is the capital of Austria’s federal state of Styria and in 2003 was designated as Europe’s Capital City Of Culture. Indeed, due to its geographical location, for many centuries Graz has been a melting pot of culture. The Schlossberg Mountain towers above the city and in 1894 a rack railway was introduced in order to overcome the severity of its 60 per cent gradient. The Romans and Celts once used the mountain as a place of ritual ceremony and today small pathways and pavilions make the mountain more accessible. In the 12th century a mediaeval castle was built on the plateau and in 1531 it was transformed into a mighty fortress that served as a defence against the Turks. With nearly 32,000 exhibits that date from the 15th to the 19th centuries the Zeughaus contains the largest collection of historic weaponry in the world. The often-extended Grazer Burg was once the residence of the Hapsburgs. One of its towers contains a unique double spiral Gothic staircase constructed of sandstone that shines out magnificently in a wonderful array of colour. The entire complex, along with each of its numerous building styles and adjoining park, is now the seat of Styria’s provincial government. Located on a hill to the north east there is another fine example of Baroque architecture, the Maria Trost Basilica. In the 17th century those who sought help and consolation climbed two hundred and fifteen steps to a Gothic Madonna who was thought to possess miraculous powers. Within the interior of the church and its colourful wall and ceiling mounted frescos, there are also various scenes of battle. Graz is a city in which the artistic and architectural styles of the German-speaking nations, the Balkans and the Mediterranean are united. It is a remarkable city of age old traditions, mediaeval flair and contemporary life.

Graz is the capital city of the southern Austrian province of Styria. The roots of Graz can be traced back to Roman times, when a small fort was built where the city centre is today; Slovenians later built a larger fortress in the same place. The name Graz is derived from the Slovenian word gradec, which means small castle. At its heart is Hauptplatz, the medieval old town’s main square. Shops and restaurants line the narrow surrounding streets, which blend Renaissance and baroque architecture. A funicular leads up Schlossberg, the town hill, to the Uhrturm, a centuries-old clock tower. Across the River Mur, futuristic Kunsthaus Graz exhibits contemporary art.

Other museums include the Landeszeughaus, with its weaponry collection, entered via the imposing arcade courtyard of the Landhaushof. The city’s cathedral, the late-Gothic Domkirche, stands next to Ferdinand II’s Mausoleum on the old town’s eastern edge, near the sprawling Stadtpark. Traditionally clad figures emerge 3 times a day from the nearby Glockenspiel, or bell tower. The Murinsel, a twisting steel island linking the River Mur’s banks, contains an amphitheater, playground and cafe. Eggenberg Palace, set in a park on Graz’s western outskirts, features ornate rococo decor, plus art, archaeology and coin exhibitions.

The old town of Graz is easily explored on foot and is reachable with a 20 min walk from the main train station. Stop at the Tourist Information at the train station, or any hotel lobby that you come across to pick up a brochure on attractions in Graz. This brochure also contains a map with most of the sights marked, as well as recommended self-guided walking routes through the town.

Graz is divided into 17 districts:

I. Innere Stadt
II. St. Leonhard
III. Geidorf
IV. Lend
V. Gries
VI. Jakomini
VII. Liebenau
VIII. St. Peter
IX. Waltendorf
X. Ries
XI. Mariatrost
XII. Andritz
XIII. Gösting
XIV. Eggenberg
XV. Wetzelsdorf
XVI. Straßgang
XVII. Puntigam

A lot to see in Graz such as :

The historic old town. It has been designated a World Heritage site.
The Glockenspiel, which comes to life with song and rotating dance figures every day
The mannerist-Baroque Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II., with impressive interior decor by famous Styrian artist Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach.
Don't miss the double spiral staircase in the Burg, a castle complex built between 1438 and 1453 by Emperor Frederick III
The Schlossberg (Schloßberg), the castle perched upon a hill in the middle of the city around which Graz sprang up. The funicular (Schloßbergbahn) and elevator (Schloßberglift) will take the effort out of the walk to the top
Clock Tower (Uhrturm) on the top of the Schloßberg, the symbol of Graz.
Eggenberg Castle (Schloss Eggenberg).
Kunsthaus, is Graz's newest modern art museum.
Murinsel
Joanneum Museum of Styria (Steiermärkische Landesmuseum Joanneum)
Armory Zeughaus, in the Herrengasse

???????? Graz | Styria | Austria

Graz, Austria

Austria’s second-largest city is probably its most relaxed. After Vienna, it is also the country’s liveliest for after-hours pursuits. It’s an attractive place with bristling green parkland, red rooftops and a small, fast-flowing river gushing through its centre. Architecturally, Graz has Renaissance courtyards and provincial baroque palaces complemented by innovative modern designs. Styria’s capital also has a very beautiful bluff connected to the centre by steps, a funicular and a glass lift. Last but not least, a large student population (some 50,000 in four universities) helps propel the nightlife and vibrant arts scene, creating a pleasant, active and live-able city.
