In Bacolod you should visit The Ruins, the Taj Mahal of Negros in Talisay City, Philippines

Whilst in Bacolod, you should definitely make a trip outside the city to Talisay City to see The Ruins the ancestral mansion of the family of wealthy sugar businessman Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson. Built on a 440 hectare sugar plantation in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, in the early 1900s and now under the private ownership of the great-grandchildren of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson and Cora Maria Osorio Rosa-Braga, the family have preserved it in its ruined state, among operational farmland, as a tourist attraction or hired for events.

Don Mariano travelled frequently to Hong Kong where he met Maria Braga, a Portuguese lady from Macau. Smitten by her beauty, he courted her and eventually married her, bringing her to Talisay just outside Bacolod And started their own family.

Having mothered 10 children, Maria was pregnant with her 11th child, when she slipped in the bathroom and started to bleed. In those days, in 1911, it would take two days to travel with horse-drawn carriage from Talisay to the town of Silay, where a doctor lived. By the time the doctor arrived – on the fourth day – Maria and her baby were gone. Her death brought Don Mariano to depression; to get him out of it, he embarked into building a house for his unmarried children.

As his father-in-law was a captain of his own ship, many items from Europe and China, ranging from machuca tiles, chandeliers, and china wares were carted to Talisay. He even brought some construction workers from China to help build the mansion.

After 3 years of construction, the mansion was finally finished. A-grade concrete and oversized twisted bars used in its construction had contributed much to the strength of the skeletal frame of the structure. The finishing touches on the walls and posts were a mixture of pure concrete with egg whites, resulting in a marble-like finish which can be seen and felt even to this day.

The 2 Ms, facing each other, molded on every post of the mansion stands for Mariano and Maria. The story of love is similar to that of the the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan who in 1632 built a tomb for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal which is known as the Taj Mahal. Because of this The Ruins is also referred to as the Taj Mahal of Talisay, Taj Mahal of Negros and Taj Mahal of the Philippines,

When World War II broke out, Don Mariano and his unmarried children left the mansion leaving everything. There were some rumors that the Japanese forces might use the mansion as its military headquarters and to prevent that from happening, Filipino guerillas intended to burn it to the ground.

It took 3 days of burning to consume all of its roof, ceiling, floors, doors and windows – all of which were made of hard wood like tindalo, narra, and kamagong. When the flames finally died down, only the following stood the fire: the pillars of the mansion, the grand staircase, as well as parts of the two-inch wooden floors on the second story.

The Philippines should be on everyone’s bucket list with its beautiful white sand beaches, fabulous idyllic islands, turquoise sea and stunning scenery. The Philippines is a traveller’s paradise and regularly included in top ten favorite places to visit in Asia and affordable, favorite world holiday destination.

Many foreigners/expats choose the Philippines as the best country to retire in Asia and live in paradise. The Philippines is one of the cheapest countries to live in the world with its low cost of living and all year sunshine. Retiring in the Philippines is affordable on a budget of less than $1000 per month.

Filipinos are welcome and warm people. Filipinos are often regarded as the most friendliest nation in Asia and nicest people in the world. English is widely spoken throughout the country. The Philippines is included in the top ten English speaking countries in the world. The majority of Filipinos are highly proficient in English, so it is very easy to strike up a conversation and make new friends.

Trip to Philippines Part 2 | Hometown visit Baliuag Bulacan | Eat localFood | Museo ni Mariano Ponce

Whenever I visit my hometown I always ensure I buy the famous Goto and Serkele by now Apo ni Aling Luring. The legacy of Aling Luring continues and their food taste is still the same. We then go newly opened Unlimited Samgyupsal a Korean restaurant in Bustos Bulacan the portion is okay and you can cook your own. Finally we visited museo ni Mariano Ponce one of the Philippines National Hero. I’m so proud that in the province now a city where I grew up there is a National Hero that was born and thanks to him for his works and contribution in Philippines revolution.

Biography by Bulacan.gov.ph :
Mariano Ponce was born in Baliuag, Bulacan, on March 22, 1863, the eldest of the seven children of Mariano Ponce and Maria Collantes de los Santos. He had his early schooling in his home town and finished his secondary education in the private school of Juan Evangelista, Hugo Ilagan and Escolastico Salandanan in Manila.

He joined Jose Rizal, Marcelo H. del Pilar, Lopez Jaena, and other patriots in the crusade for the needed Philippine reforms. He assisted Lopez Jaena in founding La Solaridad in Barcelona on February 12, 1889. He headed the Literary Section of the Asociacion Hispano-Filipina, a society of Liberal Spaniards and Filipinos, founded to help the Propaganda Movement, of which he was elected Secretary. As managing editor, he wrote regularly for La Solidaridad on history, politics, sociology and travel under various pseudonyms, some of which were Naning, Kalipulako, and Tigbalang.

When the revolution broke out in 1896, he was imprisoned in Barcelona for 48 hours on suspicion of having connections with the uprising. In 1898, Aguinaldo appointed him as diplomatic representative of the First Republic to Japan where he met his Japanese wife, Okiyo Udanwara. While enrooted to China to visit his old friend, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, whose biography he published in 1914, he died in the Civil Hospital in Hong Kong, on May 23, 1918. His remains are now in the Cementerio del Norte, Manila.
