Foreigner visiting downtown Bacolod, Negros, Philippines. Is it worth visiting?

In this video I walked around downtown Bacolod otherwise known as the city of smiles, on Negros Island, taking in Rizal Park and Capitol Park & Lagoon. Negros residents have a love for knowledge and works of art, and at Silay City there are a collection of heritage mansions built during the height of the Philippine sugar industry's success, of which Negros was the very center.

The Philippines should be on everyone’s bucket list with its beautiful white sand beaches, fabulous idyllic islands, turquoise sea and stunning scenery. The Philippines is a traveller’s paradise and regularly included in top ten favorite places to visit in Asia and affordable, favorite world holiday destination.

Many foreigners/expats choose the Philippines as the best country to retire in Asia and live in paradise. The Philippines is one of the cheapest countries to live in the world with its low cost of living and all year sunshine. Retiring in the Philippines is affordable on a budget of less than $1000 per month.

Filipinos are welcome and warm people. Filipinos are often regarded as the most friendliest nation in Asia and nicest people in the world. English is widely spoken throughout the country. The Philippines is included in the top ten English speaking countries in the world. The majority of Filipinos are highly proficient in English, so it is very easy to strike up a conversation and make new friends.

Should You Retire in Bacolod, Philippines?

Get access to exclusive content + support the channel -

Among the top reasons expats move to the Philippines to retire is due to the unbeatable cost of living of the country. Westernized places like America, Europe, and Australia simply cannot compete with the cheap cost of living that the Philippines has to offer, hence why many foreigners flock to the Philippines to spend the rest of their days.

With that being said, today we are covering one of the most affordable places to retire in the Philippines - Bacolod. This coastal city is located in the large island of Negros Occidental, nestled in central Philippines.

Living in Bacolod not only offers an extremely affordable cost of living, especially in terms of accommodations, but you also have access to beaches (typically an hour away from Bacolod City). Though all these things are great, we also cover some of the downsides of living in Bacolod to give you a solid understanding on whether or not you should retire there.

So hopefully this video was of value you to you, helping you to see if Bacolod meets your criteria of places to retire in the Philippines. If you want to see retirement in beach towns like Puerto Galera next, let's get this video to 1,000 likes. Appreciate you Savvy Expats.

Filmed using this camera: and stabilizer:

I was born and raised in Bacolod City, and the place will always be home. The City of Smiles is mostly known for the annual Masskara Festival, and being the Sugar Bowl of the Philippines. I am more proud however that Bacolod City through the years has consistently placed within the top ranks of the cleanest and most livable cities in the country.

The Heritage Houses of Negros Occidental

Negros Occidental is known for its sugar industry. Back in the days when sugar production was at its peak, it created local folks to rich sugar barons. The heritage houses that still stand today were mostly owned by these sugar barons.

In 2018, on our visit to Negros Occidental courtesy of Seda Capitol Central Bacolod, we visited three heritage houses in the cities of Bacolod and Talisay.

First was Daku Balay, an art deco house which was once the tallest building in Bacolod. Then Balay ni Tana Dicang and The Ruins, both in Talisay City.
