Situated in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, Mansfield is surrounded by grazing land and mountain forests, with the area well-known for its stunning scenery.
The town centre has several historical buildings, dating back to its days as a stock route camp in the 1940s and a gold mining service centre beginning in the 1850s. High Street and Highett Street form tree-lined boulevards with gardens along their wide central strip as they meet in the town centre. At their junction is a marble monument which was erected in 1880 as a tribute to a group of constables killed by bushranger Ned Kelly.
Mansfield is very much a tourist town featuring a wide range of accommodation and vibrant commercial centre which caters for the many visitors who then travel to the ski resorts of Mount Buller or Mount Stirling via Merrijig.

Mansfield is a vibrant and growing town with wide streets and historic buildings situated north east of Melbourne in the Victoria High Country. Gold, timber harvesting and farming were the previously large industries for the town. Mansfield has a reputation for classic country hospitality and an active arts community. The town features a large monument for Police Constables Lonigan, Scanlan and Kennedy who were in pursuit of the Kelly Gang. Mansfield was named after an early European settler, Edward Mansfield.

Mansfield is the seat of the Mansfield local government area. Mansfield was formerly heavily dependent on farming and logging but is now a tourist center. It is the support town for the large Australian ski resort Mount Buller. It is associated with the high-country tradition of alpine grazing, celebrated in the film made around Mansfield, near the now famous Craigs Hut, called The Man from Snowy River (based on a poem by Banjo Paterson).
