Siargao, Kawasan, at Asik-asik sa Loob ng Isang Araw

Music: V
URL:

Sa muli, my Name is Ayel and I'm very proud to be living in the South.

Guinakit Fluvial Parade during the 16th Pakaradyan Festival of Malapatan, Sarangani Province

GUINAKIT SA SUGODA - 16TH PAKARADYAN FESTIVAL OF MALAPATAN

With the battle against COVID-19 still far from over, it is almost impossible to imagine festivals like Malapatan's Pakaradyan taking place, but the creativity, innovation, and persistence of Malapateños proved to be without limit. Today, I was part of a well-organized, uncrowded, but definitely successful Guinakit fluvial parade. There might have been very few people on site, but in their homes, people still participated it in by watching the whole event streamed live for audiences around the globe.

The fluvial parade of guinakits, or those colorful sea vessels that are adorned with flags and ornaments, signifying royalty, is part of the annual celebration of Pakaradyan Festival. This is usually a crowd drawer but with our current situation, only a limited number of people were invited. The activity commemorates the arrival of Islam in the archipelago.

Mayor Salway Sumbo, Vice Mayor Jean delos Santos, Councilor Eleanor Suib, and Municipal Tourism Officer Katherine Guttierez were on board the main guinakit that sailed around the municipal waters of Malapatan. The main boat was flanked by two other smaller guinakits and two speedboats of the PNP Maritime Group and Coast Guard.

I was told that usually every barangay decorates their own guinakit, so what I have witnessed is about a quarter of the usual number of colorful boats participating in the parade.

Malapatan's Pakaradyan festival was opened with a virtual program yesterday and will close in the same manner tomorrow. Most of the activities were also conducted online. They had cultural dance contest, TikTok challenge, quiz bowl, feature writing, documentary film, photography and painting. All of which can be viewed on the Facebook Page of the Malapatan Tourism Office .

The municipality of Malapatan has just proven that it is possible to celebrate a festival without compromising the safety of everyone.
