White Nile River from Malakal to Bor all in Motion

14 days of travel by United Nations Barge

South Sudan | White Nile River | OLL

South Sudan is blessed with longest river ‘Nile’ and 65% of it traverses South to North of the country as river ‘White Nile’. ‘White Nile’ becomes the cheapest means to support the Northern sectors for the sustainment of UN troops, different NGOs, UN organizations (WFP, UNDP, WHO etc.) and the IDPs in different POC camps. BANFMU provide force protection to achieve the safe transit of UN contracted barges, her crew and UN stuffs through the river White Nile from Juba to Malakal and vice-versa named as “Operation Lifeline” (OLL).

Operation Life Line (OLL) is probably the most critical OPS, not only negotiations for clear passage by MLO but public relations, information gatherings on security situations, state of living standards and other arising issues that warrant UNMISS support. On the way of OLL, almost 38 check posts need to be negotiated. Negotiations from MLO is and will always remain difficult since CHPs pers already have many expectations and without fulfilling will be time consuming. People living alongside the river have need more assistance from UN agencies compared to those villages forecasted on monthly patrols.

Four national parks and fourteen game reserves, which are located throughout the nation, are home to some of Africa's most stunning and significant species. Bandinglio, Boma, Southern, and Nimule national parks are among the four parks. Bandinglio National Park is the most significant of these four. This is due to the fact that it is the site of the second-largest animal migration in the entire planet. The first is the wildlife movement between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Mara.

Bandinglio National Park was created in 1992 and is situated in the Equatorial and Eastern Regions of South Sudan. It spans more than 10,000 square kilometers and crosses the White Nile. There are numerous diverse creatures that call it home, including giraffes, lions, buffalos, cheetahs, leopards, gazelles, tigers, and elephants.

South Sudan has very few tourism facilities, yet tourists to Juba and other cities and towns in the nation seldom lack for lodging. Several reasonably priced hotels are already in operation, and many more are continuously being built. Juba International Airport in the nation is currently one of the busiest in all of Africa. International flights arrive at the airport from Cairo, Addis Abeba, Nairobi, Entebbe, Khartoum, and Dubai. Moreover, roads connect Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya to the city of Juba. For the advantage of tourists, a number of tour operators and automobile rental businesses are already operating in the city.

The Legend of the Mountain That Walked Away in South Sudan.

Recently I was in the Imatong Mountains of South Sudan. While traveling through the countryside, we were told the legend of a mountain that got up and moved, then parked itself on a village. This is that story as told by our local friend.

Mi17 taking off from Malakal

A short video of an Mi-17 utility helicopter taking off from Malakal base. These beasts were the workhorse of the mission and were almost indestructible. Especially during the rainy season, when roads were impassable, this was the only way to patrol!

But they weren't comfortable, especially when you're travelling with 19 of your closest friends along the bench seating that went down either side of the aircraft. They even had seatbelts...which were spectacularly useless.

It was a windy, gusty morning when this one took off from the Malakal heli-pad, and I figure it was going over to Malakal airport (well, what was left of the airport) to refuel, take on passengers or cargo, and follow its daily flight schedule.
