Best Things to do in MELAKA MALAYSIA - [Full Travel Guide]

Melaka or also often spelled as Malacca, is one of Malaysia’s most important centers of history. Melaka has been an important trading hub due to its location along the spice route. Due to this attractive location, many traders from India, China, Portugal, Netherlands and Arabia came to this port to buy and sell their goods. The traces of all these peoples can be found up to today and thus, it does not surprise one by seeing temples, churches and mosques in the same street. Today, Melaka is one of the most visited towns in Malaysia, by locals, Singaporean and Chinese tourists. The great attractivity of Melaka arises from its many historical buildings, street markets and Peranakan culture. The latter form a unique ethnic group, as they are the descendants of Chinese traders, who intermarried with Malay women. Therefore, visiting some of their museums, as well as trying their cuisine is highly recommended. In the list below you find some of my suggested places that I did not show in the video:
- Melaka Sultanate Palace
- Kampung Hulu Mosque
- Sababa Gallery (Selfie Museum)
- St Francis Xavier Church
- Taming Sari Tower
- Cheng He Museum
- Masjid Cina Melaka

How to reach Melaka:
- Take a bus from Kuala Lumpur (tickets are usually very cheap, 3h ride)
- Take a bus from Johor Bahru (3h ride)

A Day Trip to MELAKA from KL | Best Things to do in Malacca | Cities to Visit in Malaysia

If you are in Malaysia and want to know cities to visit in Malaysia other than Kuala Lumpur then Melaka should be one of your choices. In this video, you will see us taking A Day Trip to Melaka.

We will also show you some of the Best things to do in Melaka, Malaysia. We spent 10 hours in Melaka and visited all the highlights and best places in Melaka City.

The first place we visited was A'FAMOSA AKA Fortress de Malacca, a Portuguese fortress located in Malacca, Malaysia. It is among the oldest surviving European architectural monument.

After A'Famosa we visited St. Paul's church is very near to A'famosa and is one of the oldest churches in southeast Asia. Now it was time to see the stunning views of Melaka from a height of 110 Meters. We took a ride in Taming Sari Tower also known as Malacca Tower.

Our next stop was the Floating mosque in Malacca also known as Melaka Straits Mosque. It was built using a mix of Middle Eastern and Malay craftsmanship and looks like a floating structure when the water level is high.

Then we headed to Dutch Square (Red Square) Melaka, which is the center of Melaka. The square is surrounded by buildings painted in red, which gives rise to its popular name Red Square. One of the most picturesque points of Malacca, the most prominent building of Dutch Square is Stadthuys.

Now it was evening time and we started to take a walk at the Malacca Riverfront which feels surreal and absolutely stunning. By this time Jonker Street was getting into its full rhythm and swing. This is the best street in the whole of Melaka if you are looking for some good street food or some jazzy vibes.

So this was a power-packed day we had in Melaka and explored all the best things that you can experience in Melaka. So if you are planning to go to Malaysia and looking for some suggestions for a day trip then you are at the right place and this video can act as a Malaysia Travel Guide for you.

The best things to do in Malacca (Melaka) - 3D2N travel guide

Malacca is a noteworthy UNESCO World Heritage city and a must-visit destination in Malaysia. This old city has a rich historical past with the strong influence of several European countries.
We have been here multiple times, but the colonial buildings, a smorgasbord of ethnic food, and the antique street view still have enough power to attract us to be here again.
So we traveled to Malacca again last week. Here is what we have done during our three days and two nights.
Among the most visited places are the Dutch Square (where the Christ Church and Stadhuys are located), the St. Paul Church, Jonker Walk, riverbank of Malacca River, and more,

Top best places to visit in Malacca, Malaysia
Malacca is located on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Straits of Malacca.

Malacca, the historic state, has the outmoded feel with a laid back, leisurely pace.

The downtown area of the city is Dutch Square.
Around it are situated the most prominent buildings, such as:

Stadthuys, former town hall and one of the oldest Dutch buildings in the east.
Tang Beng Swee Clock Tower,
Queen Victoria’s Fountain,
Malaysia Youth Museum and Art Gallery,
And Christ Church.

During the day at this place is full of tourists.

The city center was listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.
Just a short walk from Dutch Square are located ruins of old bastion.
And in front of them is Church Of St Francis Xavier.

One of the most popular attractions are remains of Saint Paul’s Church.
Here you can feel the influence of different ruling eras Malacca witnessed.
From the Sultans to the Portuguese, the Dutch and finally the British.

Jalan Kota Street is packed with many interesting museums
Including ruins of the old A Famosa Fort,
Which was built just below the St Paul’s Church
Another place worth visiting is Proclamation Of Independence Memorial Museum.

A lot is going on along the Malacca River.
You can go to the Maritime Museum, which looks like a great ship,
Or you can visit the remains of Bastion Middleburg,
Or you can take a relaxing cruise down the river.
During its golden era it was a main trade route,
In our times it is a main tourist trail.

Just west of the river is Chinatown, a residential heart of Old Malacca.
The area is full of narrow winding streets, beautifully decorated houses, tiny shops, temples and mosques,
And Jonker Street the busiest and the most popular street of Malacca.
But this district has calm and peaceful atmosphere.

Here is a street which contains the prayer houses of the three faiths.
Including the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia Cheng Hoon Teng Temple.

And Kampung Kling Mosque which has the mixed of Chinese, Javanese and Arab architecture.

Poh San Teng is a Chinese temple situated outside the city center.
Just next to it is famous King’s Well.
And all of this is at the foot of the largest Chinese cemetery outside of China.
Bukit China is not only a graveyard, it’s a green hill and a popular jogging spot.
And from the top is a nice view of the town.

But the best view of the Malacca is from Taming Sari.
This 110 meter tower offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the historic city and the coastline.

Malacca in Peninsular Malaysia is also spelled Melaka and is one of the most interesting parts of the country. Malacca has a varied history, having been colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, and as such you will find influences from all of these former colonial powers in the food, architecture, and even the language.

The city also has a large Chinese community known as Peranakan or Straits Chinese which has led to the Nonya culture which is a mix of Malay and Chinese influences that has even spawned a completely unique cuisine in the form of delicious Nonya dishes. As well as food, you can expect a huge number of cultural attractions in Malacca, and considering its size it has a wide variety of engaging museums which will be a treat for any history buffs wanting to know more about the area.

This is also a strategically important part of the country that sits on a graceful river, and one of the highlights of a trip here is a scenic river cruise that allows you to take in all the delights of Malacca while enjoying the breeze over the water. Much of the city has remained unchanged for centuries and you can still find crumbling forts as well as buildings that are covered with traditional cherry-red façades that were introduced during the colonial period.

All in all, Malacca offers a serene yet fascinating glimpse into the history of Malaysia and is a top spot for anyone looking to explore a different side of the country away from big cities like Kuala Lumpur.
