A businessman from north India, Janardhan Upadhyay Garg, developed a large estate in the 16th century. During the days of Rani Janaki Devi, it reached its zenith in the 18th century.[2] There are two palaces – the old one was built in 1840 and the new one in 1935. One can see stuffed animals, hunting weapons of the 16th and 17th century, paintings and furniture. Gopaljew and Ramjew temples are popular with tourists. The place is half an hours drive from Haldia and 2:30 hours train journey from Howrah.

Admission charges: Rs 10 per head (full charges apply for children above five years). Photography is prohibited in the museum unless special permission is obtained.

এখন পুরানো নিদর্শন বলতে মহিষাদলে রাজাদের দু'টি রাজবাড়ি রয়েছে। একটি হচ্ছে রঙ্গিবসান রাজবাড়ি। যা আনুমানিক ১৮৪০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে তৈরি হয়েছিল। অন্যটি ফুলবাগ রাজবাড়ি যা আনুমানিক ১৯৩৪ সালে তৈরি হয়। তা ছাড়াও রাজবাড়ি চত্বরে গোপাল জিউর মন্দির ও রামবাগে রামজীউর মন্দির রয়েছে |

Mahishadal Rajbari is one of the most popular tourist spots in Purba Medinipur. This video is about my visit to Mahishadal Rajbari in Purba Medinipur after lockdown on 12/09/20. The royal family has two palaces namely Rangi basan, the old one, established in 1840 and the new one Phulbagh, established in 1926. This video will cover aspects like how to reach Mahishadal Rajbari, what to see there and where to stay.
The Kacharibari, Gopaljew temple with Nahabatkhana, Durgadalan are within the old palace complex. Phulbagh palace houses a museum that preserves the old and antique possessions of the earlier Rajas. There are Durbar room, Shikar room, rest room, arms room, games room. We saw porceline vases, musical instruments that include various stringed ones like Sitar, tanpura as well as tabla, large portraits, photographs of early Rajas and their descendantns, chandeliers, sofa sets, sculpture of bust of early rajas are showcased in the hall.
Next we walked to the Shikar room. The rajas of this family were fond of hunting expedition. Skulls of bears, chitol hung up on the wall, stuffed tigers carcasses and many other animals bear evidence of the sporty and adventurous nature of the rajas.
There is more evidence to this in the Astra kaksha. Daggers of various shapes and sizes, spears, axes, ‘mugur’, dumbells are kept inside glass cabinets and boxes. The rajas were also fitness buffs. They used to exercise regularly. Two spinning wheels were the finest possessions of the royal family.
The games room is adorned with a big billiard board, an evidence of luxury and opulence.
The Sayan Kaksha or bedroom or restroom is not a large one. The main attractions are a varnished wooden bed with a small stair attached to it, a wardrobe, one wooden dressing table and two gramophones.
The bedroom is a perfect example of a very artistic woodwork and wood craft. The wooden wardrobe displays excellent collection of sarees used by the Ranimatas and various other garments used by the royal family members.
There is one Library room which has archived stacks of papers and files. Some books are also kept under preservation.
The founder of the royal family is Janardhan Upadhyay, a North Indian businessman. He bought the Zamindari from the then Raja Kalyan Roychowdhury who failed to pay the revenue to the king and king Akbar declared him Raja by issuing a charter. The estate of the Zamindari was later transferred to Guru prasad Garg, grandson of Mata Janaki.
The old Rajbari Rangibasan was established in 1840 and the new one was established in 1926.
How to go
One can go by car through NH16. From Nandakumar circle take the left turn and reach Mahishadal just 8 km away and pass by Nandakumar Police station. Mahishadal Rajbari is 6 km. from there.
Where to stay
One can stay in the Rajbari (Phulbagh) to get the flavour of royal atmosphere.

Mahishadal is a small suburb in Mahishadal CD block in Haldia subdivision of Purba Medinipur district in the state of West Bengal, India.
Mahishadal is only 16 kms from Tamluk town where you can visit the Mahishadal Rajbari and the museum there, do boating in the attached park. Also give a visit to Geonkhali, a place 8 kms away from Mahishadal, a perfect picnic spot at the junction (Mohona) of three rivers.
