Mafra | World Heritage | Portugal

ERICEIRA, PORTUGAL | 7 Fun Things To Do In Ericeira

Ericeira is a small coastal town located 50km from the Portuguese capital Lisbon. It’s often referred to as the surfing capital of Europe, with surfers from all over the world heading to its golden-sand and rocky beaches with great conditions. But apart from its surf-scene, Ericeira is also becoming increasingly popular among travelers. this is because of its amazing sunsets, beautiful coastline, and relaxing yoga vibes. We’ll now dive into 7 things to do in and around Ericeira.

7. Walk the town
Even though Ericeira is no longer the traditional fishing village that it once was, it's been able to retain its authentic character. With traditional white houses and cobbled streets, it’s fun to walk around the town and get lost in the narrow alleys. There’s also a wide selection of great restaurants and bars, like Amour Soul Café for happy hour drinks, Pepe Verde for pizza, and purple ice for its açai bowls.

6. Watch the sunset
Since Ericeira is located on the west coast of Portugal, it has some amazing sunset views over the ocean. One of the best sunset spots is right in the town center above Praia dos Pescadores. From here you can see the whole beach and take in the beautiful orange, red, and pink colors.

5. Friday night @ Quiksilver
Another fun thing to do in Ericeira is to visit the Boardriders Quiksilver. It’s located right outside of town and next to it is a skatepark. But even if you’re not interested in skateboarding, it’s a fun place to hang out, especially on Friday nights. With live music, food, and drinks, surfers and travelers come to chill and socialize here.

4. Hike at Tapada de Mafra
Located about 15km from Ericeira, Tapada de Mafra is a recreational space that was once used by the Portuguese royal family as a hunting ground. Nowadays, it has turned into a lush forest, inhabited by wild animals such as deers and wild boars. It’s a great place for hiking, biking, and simply enjoying nature. Surrounded by a 21km stone wall, this place has an official entrance and is only open during the day. You have to pay 5 euros to get in and there are multiple trails you can follow.

3. Day trip to Mafra Palace & Gardens
A more popular place to visit in Mafra is its National Palace. You can combine this activity after a hike at Tapada de Mafra on the same day or do it a day trip from Ericeira on its own. Built in the 18th Century on the orders of King Jaõa V, this palace covers an area of nearly 40,000 square meters. There are endless rooms, an imposing Basilica, and a library that you can visit. In fact, the library is thought to be one of the most beautiful in the world. Behind the palace, there is also a small garden with birds, flowers, a fountain, and a picnic area.

2. Hit the beaches
If there’s something you can’t miss in Ericeira, it’s definitely the beaches. Pescadores and Sul are two sandy beaches close to the center of town. But if you prefer more quiet beaches and you don’t mind driving out of town, there are also tons of other great options (Praia de São Lourenço, Praia de São Julião, Praia da Calada, and Praia da Foz do Lizandro).

1. Surfing
You cannot leave Ericeira without having surfed at least once. Ericeira was recognized as one of the best surf destinations in the world when two of its beaches (Empa Beach and São Lourenço Beach) were classified as a World Surfing Reserve. But if you’re new to surfing, we recommend taking a few surf lessons at beaches with smaller waves. We joined a surf class at Praia do Matadouro, which had decent waves for beginners, but actually had a rocky bottom.

Making of: Journey to Portugal Revisited - Mafra

Together with writers José Luís Peixoto and Laura Restrepo, the Journey to Portugal Revisited project stopped by the town of Mafra to visit the Royal Building of Mafra, listed by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage, and learn about the various fauna and flora at the Jardim do Cerco and Tapada Nacional de Mafra. There was still time for stopping over at Ericeira, once also visited by Nobel Prize winner José Saramago. + info:

REALLY IMPRESSIVE PALACE IN PORTUGAL | MAFRA

Hi guys! Today we should be in Alentejo but the weather wasn’t or side on our trip from Algarve to Lisbon. So instead we went to Mafra!
Today’s plan:
1. Mafra’s Palace and Convent
2. Garden’s of Cerco

We went to Mafra’s Palace and Convent and it was an incredible experience. The first impression is so unexpected. You’re in a normal city road and suddenly there’s this beautiful and gigantic construction. For us one of the most impressive we’ve seen in Portugal so far. This Palace was built by the king João V in the 18th century. At this time Portugal was really rich because of the colonies like Brazil, so they’re were able to build this massive construction with 1200 divisions!
It’s impossible not to be impressed by the exterior of the Palace.
But the interior is equally impressive, they were able to keep many pieces intact so you can see how the rooms were in the 18th century when the king lived there! Every ceiling is different and the extension of the corridors is also impressive. Also they have one of the most beautiful and important libraries in the world with almost 40.000 books.
After exploring the Palace we went to the gardens. They were inspired by the Versailles gardens of Paris. It was nice but in the winter you can’t truly appreciate it. We’re sure that during spring with all the flowers the impact must be different. So, if you’re a fan of gardens we advise you to go during that time! ☺️

THANK YOU❤️

Journey to Portugal Revisited - Mafra

Venture into a new literary journey through 12 places in Portugal, once visited and described by José Saramago in his book Viagem a Portugal (Journey to Portugal, 1981, first edition). Six new perspectives of these tours by contemporary writers.
“In village churches and in larger ones, the traveller saw half a dozen saints celebrated, and he celebrated as well, praising them and even believing in their proclaimed miracles.”
The rich heritage of Mafra has in the Royal Building of Mafra, which was included on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 2019, one of its greatest showpieces, as it comprises the Royal Palace, the Basilica, the Convent, the Jardim do Cerco (Cerco Garden) and the Tapada Nacional de Mafra (National Hunting Grounds of Mafra). In turn, nearby Ericeira offers incredible waves for surfers, rare specimens of local fauna and flora, delightful seaside walks, and fresh fish. + info:

Mafra National Palace aerial view

The Mafra National Palace is a monumental Baroque and Italianized Neoclassical palace-monastery located in Mafra, Portugal, some 28 kilometres from Lisbon. The palace, which also served as a Franciscan monastery, was built during the reign of King John V (1707–1750), in consequence of a vow made by the king in 1711, who promised to build a convent if his wife, the Queen Mary Anne of Austria, gave him descendants. The birth of his first daughter, the princess Barbara of Braganza, made the king initiate the construction of the palace. It was conveniently located for hunting in the nearby forests, and was usually a secondary residence for the royal family.

This vast complex is among the most sumptuous Baroque buildings in Portugal and one of the biggest buildings constructed in Europe in the 18th century. Designed by the German architect João Frederico Ludovice, the palace was built symmetrically from a central axis, occupied by the basilica, and continues lengthwise through the main façade until two major towers. The structures of the convent are located behind the main façade. The building also includes a major library, with about 40,000 rare books.[citation needed]

The basilica is decorated with several Italian statues and includes six historical pipe organs and two carillons, composed of 92 bells. At 40 000 m² it is one of the largest palaces in the world.
